TS - Tiswas vs Swap shop

There can be only one. Tiswas. Still funny IMO after all these years, and that's not in an ironic student chat bollocks children TV vibe. I really did look forward to it all week, and it's where I remember hearing the first piece of music I ever actually though 'I like this', which was Sham69's 'Questio9ns and answers'.

Key tropes - Tiswas - working class, provincial, anarchic
Swap shop - middle-class, home counties, organised fun

This is probably the most one-sided TS in the history of TS's

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Tiswas was fantastic. ITV Sat. Morning shows always seemed tons more fun than the BBC's. Sadly, in my house, the preference on Saturday mornings was for the BBC, my mum and older sister being firmly in control (dad usually worked Saturdays and hated everything that was on before Grandstand anyway).

robster (robster), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I should have titled it - which one of you flaming mongrel sheepfuckers actually watched Swap Shop?'

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Posh Paws - that's funny isn't it?

AND NOT ON TYNE TEES, bah

Tiswas Vs Number 73?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Tiswas was absolutely magic.

"This is the song, we lovers of water sing......"

C J (C J), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we talk about Dick & Dom now please?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Both are so looking forward to their own solo careers...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

My brother-in-law was successfully auditioned to be a presenter of TISWAS... just before the show was cancelled. :(

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, Tiswas for: "it's Conga-tition time"

the custard pies

the custard pie related punning on a TV show theme (Top of the Flops, Flanorama etc)

for bringing us Tarrant even tho it took him ages to do anything in his career which was remotely as good (ie Millionaire)

and just for being different and not spawning a load of shows which just made cosmetic changes but were largely same-old, same-old, coz Swap shop just started a run of formulaic BBC shows with different presenters - Superstore, Going Live, Live and Kicking, whatever's on now....

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Dick and Dom are grebt - why are they taken off for the summer. ALL YEAR LONG INTERNATIONAL BOGIES, PLEASE

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Where else am I going to get my muckmuck addiction fix on Saturday mornings? More Dick and Dom, please!

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

That's another thing Amber and Alice want on a Sat Morn, that we try and avoid. Argh.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I am starting to worry about how much I have in common with your kids, Mark!

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it true that the presenters of Tiswas made the show after going out clubbing all night and that was how they got the anarchic vibe?

I'm sure there are kids here who weren't allowed to watch ITV as children. There was a thread on that once.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I am too young to remember either. My earliest memory was the Five Star "why are you so fucking shit?" question on Going Live. Gordon blushed!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-b-but Matt! That would indicate they had upbringings of a a weird sort. They might be children of weirdy middle-class types, who went to fee-paying-schools who turned out really twee-teenagers.

God I'm in a foul sarcastic mood today (daveb), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Not forgetting "You're a bunch of wankers!" to Matt Bianco on Saturday Superstore.

(xpost)

I watched it on the sly.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You couldn't watch CITV on the sly because it was SO FUCKING NOISY. Like, four times the volume of CBBC on average. Case study being Fun House vs Blue Peter.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Fun house! There's a whole lot of fun, prizes to be won, Fun house!

Sadly, I was well into my teens when this was on. But my little brother wasn't, and so it's seared into amy brane. Fuck you, Sharpe*

Coming soon to ITV, starring Sean Bean

x-post Elvis Costello! Jarvis Cocker! Sally James! John Gorman gags and religious references. That picture has _everything_.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hang on, that child is JARVIS COCKER?! When did this show air?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

seventeen years pass...

follow up: TISWAS vs OTT ?

Diggin Holes (Ste), Friday, 13 August 2021 10:00 (four years ago)

incidentally my only memory of OTT, as a very young child, was of some snooker footage that seemed real at the time until a lady walked in with her boobs out.

Diggin Holes (Ste), Friday, 13 August 2021 10:01 (four years ago)

then i was hooked.

Diggin Holes (Ste), Friday, 13 August 2021 10:01 (four years ago)
