Nighty Night - is that what all the fuss was about?

I saw a couple of these the other night and thought, this is all very good and most admirable and three cheers all round etc but, uh, it's not really funny enough is it?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Compared to what? Most of the 'comedy' on at the moment is fucking piss.

Debord (Debord), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked this prog actually, it made me squirm & laugh at the same time. there is a thread on here about it, but I can't do one of those fancy link thingies.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The last episode, where she made her geeky 'lover' commit murder was pantwettingly funny.

pink: YES YOU CAN
On ILX if you copy and paste a URL into a post, it is changed automatically into blue writing. Even more, if it is an ILX thread URL the blue writing becomes the title of the thread.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

You see, I saw that last episode and thought it was definitely odd, but not funny.

Echo75, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant where ppl type 'this is the thread' & it links to where they want it go. I know about the copy & pasting thing. Thanks though Alan!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a bit of discussion of Nighty Night on the Little Britain thread. I didn't like it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the whole series of nighty night except one. Thought it was mouth-agape telly, but agreed it was often so fuckin' dark it couldn't possibly be "funny" in the established sense of the rod. But hats off to them for almost inventing entire new reasons to laugh, or at least to feel awful about being about to laugh, or something.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't like it much in the end either - too hysterical, too relentless. I think I was offended more by the BBC's we-got-dark trailer campaign ("bad taste never felt so good") than the show itself. I think I like my sick stuff either in an unexpected place (see: If You See God, Tell Him, the bizarro Renwick/Marshall thing from '93 or so with Richard Briers) or just done with dry, surgical sterility (jam, etc).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

'established sense of the rod'

this is very good

omg, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

oops

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Dry Jam

the bluefox, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If you don't sterilise your jam jars they will go mouldy.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I just kept thinking of Adam and Joe going "It's daaaaarrrrkkkk" and "You don't understand my genius!" during this show. My god, the new-wave of new-wave of new-wave of British comedians really have outstayed their welcome.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What amuses you?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Me?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard about this Adam & Joe piss-take of Chris Morris but never seen it - where would I find it? In fact, is there any A&J DVD/VHS action in existence at all?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 29 April 2004 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha - it's actually on the jam DVD* - which is only a tenner in Borders now. (* - maybe as a hidden extra though). I think enough time has elapsed since I worked on the subs for that (and so saw every minute, including material that didn't make it, multiple times...also the whole project went a bit sour at the end) to actually consider buying it at this reduced price.

I don't think I even LIKE this show. (Four episodes watched, might've been able to chuckle once.) It's so relentlessly cruel that I can't take my eyes off it.

I knew there was a thread on this. I've been watching this show and it is like a car crash - I am squirming, I hate Jill (which one's supposed to of course), but it is so ridiculously twisted and selfish and psychotic I can't not watch.

I've seen her in a few of "Human Remains" and that, too, was painfully dry, twisted and black. Julia Davis is an interesting comedian.

I'm not sure why I want to keep watching something so discomfiting but I do.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh i found it hard not to watch despite barely raising a smirk. possibly the 'darkest' scene of all is the very last moment of the very last episode!

Sven Basted (blueski), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think i can make it that far. i am flinching and cringing as i watch. my wife sits next to me laughing her head off.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this ever coming out on DVD? It sounds brilliant.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

It is great, but in an extremely british masochistic way!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean in the sense that it's a comedy which isn't funny?

Series 2 starts tonight on bbc3, exciting!
I'm pleased to see the return of mark gatiss' character, i was sad when he died.

Slumpman (Slump Man), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I thought Series 2 Ep 1 was rather better than any of the Series 1 stuff; but then with the ending it looked rather as if it was just a setup episode for the rest of the series. I'm not confident as to how the rest of this series is going to go.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

human remains was shit.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

See, when I first posted this thread I hadn't even seen any Todd Solondz films yet! Now it all makes sense!

Todd Solondz sucks.

Nighty Night is great.

phantasy bear (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:06 (twenty years ago)

I never got past the first few eps. After she started seducing the teenage son I got kind of squicked and gave up on it.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:15 (twenty years ago)

You missed the most fucked up parts then. The final episode is barely even trying to be funny, it's just pure blackness and psychosis.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 27 January 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

Series two was really bad compared to the first one.
