according to CNN. What I'm wondering is whether there will be a tipping point with all these U.S. deaths. 9/11 seemed to harden the American public to bodybags, but is there a point at which they will say enough is enough and just get out? I really don't think the UK could have sustained the kind of casualties the Americans have sustained and still be in Iraq, the public pressure would just be too great.

1000 deaths was a media milestone, the next one will inevitably be when the number of us deaths equal the number who died in the WTC. The US army is keeping a lid on the taqlly and it's impossible to get a tally of the wounded at all. As for a tipping point, we'lll see, but there is no short or even medium term exit sstrategy for the US.

I seem to remember George Carlin doing a bit about how in war, all the objects and terms are in some way very sexual and macho; this was his explanation for why we don't like to "pull out" - it seems kinda unmanly. Take that as you will.

Remember how, leading up to the war, the all these big, mainstream churches and faiths here in the U.S. were speaking out against it, sending letters to Bush pleading that he not go to war, etc.? What's happening with that now? Are they regularly preaching against the war?
