Classic but loses points for causing almighty row between self and M. when M. accidentally (?) read in my diary that I quite fancied running away with wee Mr Owen, after some gorgeous world cup goal or other...

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The tautest hamstrings in the game.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Accidentally????

Big dud, how can one person be so very dull. Alright footballer though I suppose.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i wonder where this is going (similar to the Shearer thread i expect). I think he is/has been phenomenal but this has been a poor season by his standards and it's a shame he seems to lack that initial spark that made him such a sensation 5-7 years ago. Yes he's too eager to dive for penalties (didn't stop Klinsmann being a legend) but still hot for pace and in the air.

Oh he's a bit boring personality-wise as well and isn't it a shame he's not a drug-addled mentalist or something (zzzz)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, not sure if that was aimed at me Stevem, but that's what I think.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

no it was a x-post sarah, nevermind

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Was it meant for me? I'm armed.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

When he's in form - classic classic classic. Unfortunately that seems to be happening less and less with each successive year. He doesn't seem to be a striker you can RELY on though and I hope to god England don't have to go to penalties in Euro2004.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevem - ah, carry on then petal! ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The penalty awarded in the France '98 game against Argentina still makes me cringe.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Owen was a fantastic penalty-taker until this season. I don't know what happened. Maybe after missing his first he decided against lengthy run-ups but this seems to have backfired spectacularly so now he must just not know what to think anymore.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Needs to move to be truely classic and test himself in a team that is worthy of his talents. Even he must get sick of just relying on Stevie G.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolute Dud cannot think of a footballer I dislike more. I think I even prefer robbie savage to him

Davel (Davel), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Second most over-rated footballer of the late 90s.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

After?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have hopes he'll get past the tedious form he's been in for the last couple of years. I agree with Nick H, if he doesn't move on he'll just wither at Anfield.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he might fear his shiny-white reputation might be damaged if he deserts the 'Pool. I reckon the Scousers wouldn't blame him and wish they could do the same.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt- Denilson, obviously.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing is, if he does leave Liverpool, there'll be one thing on his mind: "remember what happened to Robbie Fowler". Same situation, former "best striker in Britain" has an off-season or two, changes clubs to start anew, and then continues massive downslide. Perhaps he'd be better off going abroad? Or to Celtic....

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember that goal he scored for England schoolboys? The opposition (Scotland?) had just scored. He picked the ball out of the net, ran to the centre circle, shouted to his teammate to pass it to him and then dribbled his way through to equalise.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

re: fowler and owen - owen qould be in a slightly different position to fowler. robbie left pool because he wasn't getting a regular game, went to a smaller club and petered out. owen would be leaving because he is too good for the club, and would head to a bigger club - r.madrid probably. it would give him a boost.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you think Madrid would be interested? Owen's not the name footballer he was back in 98 when Juventus were after him.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

he's still young-ish, so i'd say they might. a good euro 2004 would help. wherever he goes, i'm guessing it will be a club with ambitions greater (/ more likely to succeed) than liverpool.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i think Fowler is more over-rated than Owen

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

is fowler rated any more?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronaldo and Raul. Where would Owen fit in?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

the bench!

(poss. ronaldo on his way to chelsea?)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Robinson on Owen:

Michael Owen is one of the reasons Liverpool are crap, because the aim is just to get him one on one. Owen has only got one medium - come short and go long. I'd have loved to have been as good as him - the trouble is, Houllier has built a whole team around him and every other team in England knows about it. Houllier is so stereotyped in his thoughts. It's not fair on Michael, it's not fair on the team and it's not fair on the victims like me who watch it. At Real Madrid, Owen would be a substitute.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The key difference between Owen and Fowler is that Owen isn't pissing away his talent with his lifestyle.

I can see Owen at Barca over Real. Van Nistelrooy too if Ronaldo doesn't go to Chelsea.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a rhetorical question anyway.

Isn't Morrientes returning to Madrid next year? They still pay two thirds of his wages!

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

At Real Madrid, Owen would be a substitute

not picked ahead of the world's official greatest striker and Spain's favourite marksman? blimey

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the English have an inferority complex, especially when it comes to football. I don't think other nations understand that.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Barca have been dropping handkerchiefs in his direction recently. I think he would do best to stay at Liverpool - under a new manager.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Have Chelsea tried to buy him yet?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Barca are playing terrific football at the moment. I guess they're looking for a Kluivert style striker for when he moves on. They already have an 'Owen' in Saviola. Hence the interest in van Nistelrooy and Trezeguet.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

He's had a few injuries and has taken a long time to find his form after them. I'm hoping he's getting there again now, ready for the Summer, but I do wonder if he will ever recapture his peak form of a couple of years back. If I were Real or some other hugely rich club, there would be dozens of strikers higher on my wishlist than Owen at the moment.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 29 April 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
a good debut. splendid assist for ronaldo, a constant pain in the ass (although i only caught the last 35 minutes, goal was scored just seconds before i tuned in). very good chance to score a debut goal, clean through after sterling work by the boy becks - i am tempted to blame the scuffed finish on the bobbly pitch, though.

meanwhile liverpool lose 1-0, just 5 goals in 5 games this season, 3 from the man who carries them (gerrard). i feel owen will be missed at anfield.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 29 August 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
"At Real Madrid, Owen would be a substitute."

it would appear so.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

owen to play vs wales?

weaselllll deeeeeezel, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Certainly. Sven needs Owen match fit for when he takes over the Real job and the only way he can do that is by giving him games for England.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

And what of the rumours Owen is to do an Ian Rush and scurry back to Anfield as quick as he can?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel sorry for Owen, it seems fairly obvious that no one really wants him at Real Madrid, especially the players, and his presence there pushing Morientes down the pecking order appears to be dividing the squad (yeah, I know, overpaid primadonnas etc but you have to admit they've got a point).

Do Liverpool want or need him back? And its hard to see which other English club he could go to without it being viewed as a step down.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

He should go back to the Premiership definitely - but not to Liverpool

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Everton! He can replace Rayne Wooney!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

if he plays on Saturday then i'd bank him to score, and he'll stay at Real for the season (in accordance with FIFA rulinz). i don't know why Real would want Sven as coach.

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

like robbie keane at intr milan: a loan move back to the premiership at the next available opportunity? matt otm re: the dilemna facing owen should he return to the premiership - it would basically have to be for a smaller club (smaller than both pool and real). man u, pool, newcastle, and arsenal not realistic possibilities imo (or perhaps i am foolish to say so?) maybe re-united w/heskey at b'ham!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

He'd be more of a replacement for Radzinski. In which case, yeah, we'll have him. He'd be coming home. Champions League football in 05-06 too.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he should go to France. It's nice there.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not Newcastle? That would be perfect for him.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

... I mean, after Shearer goes of course

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Are Grampus 8 still going? Do they need to bolster their squad?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe he could follow Macca's fine example yet

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Man City!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i meant fight for and earn a regular place in the starting XI, score and assist a lot and generally have a successful couple of seasons after a tricky start

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

It's so disheartening when English players come back from abroad so quickly. It's like we're just not good enough, still. This is what I was saying ages ago about our inferiority complex, which most Scots don't seem to believe exists.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Our inferiority complex is bigger than your inferiority complex

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I grant you that.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Owen Hargreaves seems to be doing alright ;) I think it's a combination of things not least that English players are one of the least exported nationalities to other countries because the League here is so rich, powerful and excellent in terms of quality. Italians and Spaniards seldom ventured outside their own countries to other clubs at all until the mid-late 90s. I'd still class Lineker, Mcmanaman, Ince and Platt as successful exports tho.

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I know. That's why I said it's an inferiority complex rather than real inferiority.

At Euro 2004, I can't remember any Italian or Spanish squad members playing for foreign clubs, but no one calls the Spanish and Italians not good enough for other countries' leagues. It's a money thing, yeah.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

And let's not forget Tony Goal, Paul Elliot, Tony Woodcock, Kelvin Koogan and Gordon Cowans.

I think there's a wider point though about the whole issue of Englishmen abroad - our lack of lingustic skills don't help, and the culutral gap is a killer. UNtil releative;ly recently, there were articles about why foreign players in the main did poorly here, especially African players. The basic problem was culutral and compounded by language and the whole politics of nationality within clubs. It happens here, and so it'll happen there too, and the young lads who end up going out have varying levels of capability at handling them.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

but no one calls the Spanish and Italians not good enough for other countries' leagues

that's because they have the best leagues, along with England - but as Dave points out there's a cultural clash which separates England from the continent and this is somehow a factor (even the supposed difference between the British game and the European style).

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

N. is right, though England also bangs on too much about its players.

Grampus 8!

But I think Everton, Newcastle, Man City or Celtic for Owen.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Celtic? If only!!!!!!!!!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

what is N right about exactly? it's so hard to tell - er, no offence...to anyone really...

if i were Owen i would be offended by the lack of faith shown...not that i believed moving to Real was a good idea all in all - yet i was and remain optimistic (naive?)

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Would it be churlish to say 'that'll learn him'? He swallowed the Madrilenos ideology hook line and sinker, and paid the price for his lack of vision. If players have agents, surely it's to tell him stuff like this? But no. His agents probably pocketed a fat fee though.

The solution is clear - every player should hire ME

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Eavis?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

you're not going to turn down the chance to join Real Madrid tho are you?

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Owen may be the 'new' Postiga

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always thought Owen overrated but he is good enough to (marginally) improve the current Liverpool or Newcastle sides. Not Arsenal or ManU. Chelsea struggling to score and he might even do a job for them.

I still think the likeliest scenario is he will continue to struggle in Madrid and come back to a mid-table Premiership side though.

frankiemachine, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe Boro, if Mclaren sticks around

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Owen would never go to Boro, he's got too much pride for that

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Boyle is right.

N. is right to say that we have that complex, as previously exemplified in his comments on Hargreaves, once, when I very much agreed with him.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps the complex is the other side of, or the same thing as, an obsession with our own players.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I watched the Real game on Sunday - he started, with Ronaldo injured, and was dreadful. Morientes came on after 56 minutes and livened things up for them a bit, so I'm not sure that Owen is holding third in the strikers' order of preference. I thought he was past his best anyway - he never seems to have got that quickness and sharpness back after the injuries. Going to Real always looked a mistake, but I imagine he thought Raul was fading, but he'll have to fade a good bit more, and quickly, to make it into a good move.

I expect he'll start anyway - Defoe and Smith are building a case, but I doubt they have done enough yet to grab a starting place from him.

I think Newcastle is a very logical choice if he does return. He'll want a big club with a chance of winning things and getting into Europe, and with Shearer's career ending, and I can't see Kluivert hanging around for ages there either, there's every chance he can be a regular.

Re English players adjusting: I still remember Ian Rush's comments on learning Italian when he went to Juve: "It's like a foreign language." I think that may be at the root of the problems. Still, Beckham still looks like a real star at Real.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Celtic? If only!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't want him. A striker who relies so much on pace is a waste of time in a league where the opposition is camped in their own box for 90% of the game. I'd rather have Ian Rush.

Owen: dud. I've always had a problem with the whole "who can best partner Owen" dilemma that has plagued his club and national managers - when it seemed clear to me that "no-one" was the obvious answer.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, English players, Ian Rush?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

No-one can say no to Real Madrid. Except Patrick Vieira. And most players in the world until 2000.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost) A choice between three Welsh strikers: Rush, Owen and Hartson? Can't have Rush but I'd certainly rather have Owen than Hartson.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

2000 was a long time ago. I don't know how Wenger kept Vieira either. Not that Real seems that desirable a club to be at anymore. And I accept there can be no real defence of Owen unless he regains that spark, which I continue to hope he does. I still think his flick against Portugal had a little bit of magic about it.

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

No chance of Owen going to Celtic - even if his value has dropped 50% he's still way out of their financial league, especially given the financial conservatism of the Celtic board. Gerry is OTM that Owen's style of play wouldn't suit Celtic anyway, but it's totally academic. I'm not convinced Owen is a more effective player than Hartson, and I'm sure he wouldn't be for Celtic.

frankiemachine, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it wouldnt suit the SFL, not that they need it, but it might help them in Europe.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Owen wouldn't score goals in the SPL?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

He would no doubt score goals, but would he score 50 in 67 league games (or thereabouts, I think that was Hartson's record)?

I accept Owen's ability as a goal scorer (albeit with seemingly fading confidence and pace), but to be an Old Firm forward in the SPL you need to be a penalty box striker. I'd rather have Hartson.

That said, frankiemachine makes a fair point about Owen bringing a bit more to the European table. Hartson's scored a couple of crucial goals (including a peach against Liverpool) but his record of around 1 in every 5 games isn't good enough.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"That said, frankiemachine makes a fair point about Owen bringing a bit more to the European table"

Or me.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

we'll never know but i think if Owen had been in the same position Hartson had, at the same time, he could have scored as many goals for Celtic. don't know about now tho, probably not.

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

In fairnesss, credit where credits due and to be fair to Jarlr'mai, good luck to him

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Michael Owen has been hailed as the saviour of Real Madrid by grateful coach Mariano Remon.
Remon said: “Owen has saved us in two games.”
Last Tuesday Owen’s strike helped Real dump Dynamo Kiev to improve their chances in the Champions League.
At the weekend, Owen’s finish defeated Valencia in La Liga.
Owen’s hot streak plus goals from David Beckham have secured four home victories and prompted Spanish daily Marca’s headline “Gol save the Queen.

Hurrah! I feel all patriotic.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

take that hataz

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Good for Owen. I hope he learns something from his Spanish sojourn, regains his confidence, and goes forward to be a better, different striker for England than he has been recently.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Good for both of them, but DOWN with Real!

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Barca fan, adam? I certainly am in comparison to Real.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Owen bagged his third goal in a week for Real Madrid when he scored the winner at Leganes in the Copa Del Rey.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

*does safety dance*

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Owen made an irrefutable case for a Real Madrid starting place when he came off the bench again to score his fifth goal in six outings and secure a 2-0 victory over Malaga last night.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)
