for what are you pining?

i currently pine for:
1) gramercy park. the leaves are green, the weeping cherry trees and magnolias are in bloom, the paths are raked, the weeping willows are rustling. it looks like paradise, and it's all locked up unless you happen to live around it and have a key. which brings me to
2) the ancient white high-rise building opposite the park on the east side, with two small knights in armor standing guard on either side of the stairway ramp. maybe a place to raise a passel of pampered yet artistic children while running a successful home-based brass restoration business. and finally
3) 22 gramercy park south. an incongruously short and ratty building, brick painted seafoam green. i can imagine living in one of the apartments, worrying about my enigmatic new husband who may have serious skeletons in the closet and evil designs on my heirloom jewelry.

I hear you loud and clear. I *heart* NY. And that's as twee as it's gonna get.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 30 April 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i miss portland. i miss the corn dogs and elephant ears at saturday market, and eating them on the dirty waterfront. i miss the corner window in our room at the governor hotel, overlooking the small roof garden. i miss dandy warhols jokes. i miss the ratty southeast houses obscured by flowers, gnarly weeds, and tall shrubbery. i miss driving aimlessly around "the couv" and seeing the original burgerville sign shining out into the dismal evening sky like a lighthouse beam. i miss the one or two blocks of third avenue that still sorta look like you'd imagine the "real" portland looked: scuzzy, longshoremanlike, westcoasty, noneuclidean.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 30 April 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I pine for dying evening light filtered through the banana leaves surrounding your porch, lightening bugs and invisible salamanders showing up close at hand, the tinkle of the bamboo chimes in the near-dead breeze and the Cityplace tower lighting up like a birthday cake or some explosive device right above our heads.

lauren, would you like me to make a copy for you? I once thought I lost my copy, but years later, I found the CD in the case for Perfect Teeth.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

woo! that would be excellent. i suppose i should get around to mailing you that copy of more, huh?

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Travel, really. Specifically Central America and Budapest. US vacation allowances suck. I had 25 days when I worked in London, and someone told me that is only what CEOs get here. Of course, I knew all this before I came here. It just sucks.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

winona is in grammercy? I thinks I need to ask my neighbor for some sugar.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

give it a try. she's very free with the sugar, or so i've heard.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I hear that Brits not only get a shitload of days off but get paid DOUBLE TIME when on vacation. !!!
and if you work odd hours, ie 2nd or 3rd shift you get paid at least 25% more than if you worked 9-5.
is this true?

oops (Oops), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. And they all have tails.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

they also get free healthcare. CRAZY!!

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The first part is what we call "bollocks", oops. The second part could be true, I don't know.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

well it's true for at least one printing firm in Hull.

oops (Oops), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha. How completely random.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The getting comparatively loads of vacation is true compared to the US, in that the legal minmum here is 20 days a year, rather than 10(?) in the states.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@m

Take a short, reasonable paternity leave each year. Bring boss pics of new babies. Explain odd religious cult's requirement to agressively 'go forth and multiply'.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

when you start a new job, you generally have to wait a year before you can take your week of vacation.
my friend has been working for the same place for 5 or 6 years, is upper management, and only just recently was granted a second week of vacation. (though he does have another 5 "personal" days)

work week is 35hrs in UK? or was i misinformed? you don't want to even hear about the horrors of being salaried and working 60hrs a week.

oops (Oops), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

any job I've had in the past 5 years has had at least 2 weeks of paid vacation at the start, including this one.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

35 hours/week for workers in France.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

There is effectively no legal maximum working week, owing to lovely John Major's lovely opt-out of the EU working time directive. I was working well over 70 hour weeks for a non-trivial chunk of last year.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd say you're fairly lucky, hstencil.

xpost

are you salaried, ricardo? or did you get paid (handsomely) for the overtime?

oops (Oops), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

not lucky, skilled. ; )

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Salaried.

Orbital Blue, sex, sun, cheesecake, good health. One of these is imminently solvable, two should be done within a few days. The other couple are dependent upon circumstances (almost) outside of my control.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 April 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)
