Anyway.. Atom Egoyan, I liked Speaking Parts and Family Viewing the best of what I've seen; I thought the Sweet Hereafter and Exotica were kinda overrated, kind of predictable.
I saw a film Gaz Bar B1ues by Louis Belanger a while ago and quite liked it.

Didn't know this thread existed, so I posted in the Kids in the Hall thread... I saw Crime Wave at MoMA last night; sort of indescribable except it's a color retro pastiche of '50s crime films/crazed loner tales/ a sort of Blue Velvet-sized ambition in 16mm. The writer-director went on to do filmed segments for TKITH, like "Mr Heavyfoot." It was shown in a new digital edition, so I suspect someone will retail it in the next year.

Embarrassing, but until tonight I'd never seen the film usually voted as Canada's greatest in polls: Claude Jutra's Mon Oncle Antoine from '71. There was a free screening at the Lightbox. Worth the wait--Goin' Down the Road remains my own favourite, but I can see why Jutra's is so revered. There were a couple of scenes right towards the end that I found tonally jarring, everything before that very Truffaut-like and poetic. Thought also of The Deer Hunter (the first hour, before they cut to Vietnam), My Life as a Dog, and As I Lay Dying. Great music throughout.

Speaking of which:
http://www.cbc.ca/arts/the-filmmakers/this-summer-spend-your-saturday-nights-with-canadian-movies-on-the-filmmakers-1.4207703
"...Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner), widely regarded as the best Canadian film of all time." Yeah, I'd forgotten about that--I guess that's replaced Mon Oncle Antoine at the top. Prefer Jutra's film.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 14:36 (eight years ago)
I saw it recently as well and thought it was almost perfect. Tonally jarring in a good way, I would say. The whole sequence of the protagonist and Antoine out on their trek is brutal.

Being Canadian's not enough here--you've got to be Canadian and over 50. The Royal in Toronto is showing Face Off next month--not that one, no--with Art Hindle in attendance.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig9aeTrfZSQ
It's the Canadian Love Story, The Love Machine, and Panic in Needle Park all rolled into one. That's why I dig it.

― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 30 July 2017 06:47 (eight years ago)
The hockey footage is amazing--besides all the Leafs, I know Derek Sanderson turns up, and I think there are shots of Orr, too. George Armstrong has a scene with Hindle/Billy (based on Jim McKenny, I believe).
― clemenza, Sunday, 30 July 2017 12:27 (eight years ago)
I should probably post this on the hockey thread...The hockey footage in Face Off was even better than I remembered. As Art Hindle said afterwards, you could never pull it off today: Orr, Howe, Béliveau, Mikita, Plante, Espositio, Keon, Foster Hewitt. I haven't been a fan for 40 years, so I was surprised by lesser Leafs I still recognized: Bobby Baun, Ron Ellis, Ricky Ley, Jim Dorey. You also get Paul Henderson the year before he scores the most famous goal ever in Canada, and a very young Darryl Sittler. Hilarious: maybe 30 people in the theatre, and when Harold Ballard (Toronto's George Steinbrenner) showed up for about 10 seconds, two or three people booed.) Recognized George Gross, the sportswriter, but missed Scott Young, Neil's father, who had a hand in the script. Joe Sgro, the Leafs trainer at the time, gets a line; I believe my dad knew his sister from the bank and we got tickets through him one time.
Pretty good film for the first half. Even the music's not bad, very 1970-ish folky sunshine pop in the vein of the Poppy Family. At some point, bad vibes take over and everything gets very grim. Hindle spoke for an hour afterwards, lots of funny stories. I hung around and got him to sign my Invasion of the Body Snatchers DVD, '78 version; "You're next!" he wrote.

Heads up, Canadians, especially if you're older--this could be excellent.

I hope they pull back a bit and look at '67 as some kind of epiphany for our country in general.
― clemenza, Thursday, 10 August 2017 22:54 (eight years ago)
Didn't like the Expo documentary much--hardly any '67 about it. And virtually nothing on Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome.
One follow-up to Face Off. I met up with Dianne yesterday, my retired teaching assistant from when I started. She always has amazing stories--saw the Beatles at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1964, processed government paperwork for "Cassius Clay" around that time, etc. I mentioned having seen Face Off recently and asked her if she'd ever seen it. Turns out she a) went to school with Trudy Young (the lead actress in the clip above), and b) Young taught Dianne how to whistle. Telling her that Art Hindle was in attendance was a bit anti-climactic after that.

The Lightbox had a free Canada Day screening of Michel Brault's Entre la mer et l'eau douce today, which, truthfully, I was oblivious to until I saw it on the schedule a couple of weeks ago. Belongs aside Nobody Waved Goodbye and Winter Kept Us Warm as a pioneering Canadian feature (1967, his first full-length film)--Denys Arcand and Claude Jutra are among the screenwriters. You can see traces of its influence in Goin' Down the Road and Mon Oncle Antonine. I didn't love it--when I connect with a mood piece, I overrate it, and when I don't, I probably underrate it, and I never really connected with this--but above all else there's Geneviève Bujold, whose beauty kind of breaks your heart.

Looking for a film to add to a syllabus I'm putting together, with the stipulations that it be
*Canadian*Coming-of-age themed (though not necessarily made for children/teenagers)*From the 20th century*In English
This seemed like it should be easy, but every time I think of something I like/would want to teach, I realize that they are either in French (Mon Oncle Antoine, Léolo), too contemporary (My Winnipeg) or both (C.R.A.Z.Y.). Who has suggestions?

Not adverse to it; will have a look to see if I can find it. The biggest challenge for any film I pick is making sure its available to stream/rent somewhere. We're still working under the delusion that classes will be in session in the Fall, but I expect the course to be moved online.
