Has anybody been to Yosemite recently?

I went to the Valley this weekend for the first time in ages. The falls are full, including the seasonal ones like Ribbon. The dogwood is in bloom everywhere. Spring is going wild there right now and you should go soon if you can.

Any time is beautiful, but Yosemite Valley is particularly stunning right now. It's one of the prettiest springs in the Valley I can remember.

what causes seasonal variation? blooming? snowmelt? my parents were there in March and said it was really great.

do I infer correctly that mid-to-late September is the optimal time to visit if you want to do at least day-hiking in Tuolomne Meadows, e.g., but don't want to be crushed by tourists? has anyone been on any of the outdoor-oriented 2-3 day tours from SF (Merced)? are the Green Tortoise trips as sketchy as their hostel?

The valley really has 4 distinct seasons unlike most of California. It obviously has to do with water but also with the sun exposure.

Tuolomne Meadows is always full of tourists but don't let that stop you. September is beautiful in the high country, so is May/June. BTW Tioga is opening on the 15th, if I recall correctly.

my question was too imprecise - i meant, what makes one year at yosemite different from another (and this year especially nice)?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Snowfall, rainfall, random weather.

Yosemite was the one big disappointment of me and Sarah's road trip last June. Full of crowds and mosquitoes.

Tuolomne Meadows is always full of tourists but don't let that stop you.

my parents reported that the Park was near-empty ~Feb-Mar, but I gather that you can only really walk on the roads through Yosemite Valley at that time. What I'm wondering is whether there is any interim period early or late in the season when most or all of the park is accessible, but the crowds are comparatively small.

Not really. I'm perhaps not as crowd-phobic as most because I grew up in the park and new faces were a welcome source of excitement. That said, major holiday weekends in the summer are just too much. However, if you go to, say, Tuolomne Meadows, and then go into the back country, you can always find places relatively bereft of tourists and find people there who are more than day trippers. My advice - take a weekday or two off and go now. There were lots of people this last weekend but even in the Valley, if you know how to get off the most beaten paths you can find some serenity.
