i may be working one soon.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

at a record store?

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

classic, especially when you start to see spots and start drooling

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

welcome to my world

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

no, guarding a grain silo.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm surprisingly chipper today on 4 hours sleep. I think bringing in a towel and showering in work has helped. I will be catatonic by 4.30 anyway.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo, is it summer yet where you are @?
i mean, guarding a grain silo in da summah can be smoofthly (slo-mo) groovy indeed. no kidding.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah it's summer. it's hot as a yak's balls. (i'm not really guarding a grain silo, sadly!)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-baaaah-hhh!...
:(

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i will probably end up doing something like janitorial work in the courthouse.

my life is going nowhere.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I did it-11 P.M. to 7 A.M.- for 3 years. Apparently people who do it for a long time don't live as long as day-workers. Lack of sunlight or something or fucked up sleep patterns. I remember the first week coming home from work and lying down and having the most amazing hallucinations. Mostly auditory.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently people who do it for a long time don't live as long as day-workers

saves me the trouble of committing suicide later (stifles desolate 6am yawn)

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I worked 11pm to 7am in a print/copy shop for six months. I never got used to it. Unless you're on a bender, drinking beer at 7:30am sucks.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It was always a little weird to be wide awake going home at 7 a.m. and see all the sleepy people going off to work.

I liked the job though. I worked at a supermarket after closing, unloading trucks and stocking shelves. It gave me a lot of time to think. I pretty much worked alone. I smoked way too many cigarettes though, and drank way too much bad coffee, and ate too much candy and had to listen to way too much classic rock. My stomach was a mess.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

For nearly 3 years I did a 11pm til 7am shift.

I'm not an easy sleeper (what with all the guilt an' all) so my life for that time involved me trying to fool my body and brain into thinking it was night time during the day, so that I could sleep.

This involved, amongst other things, heavy-duty duvets plastered against all windows to block out light, industrial-strength ear plugs, bizarre pyjama habits and war-scarred teddy bears.

When it got to the point that I was recording TV shows I didn't even like in the evening, and watching them in the morning to fool my senses, I quit. Oh, that plus the stomach ulcer "the graves" gave me too.

Another world, truly. Although stumbling home pissed up at 9am while everyone's going to work really is as great as it sounds.

Huey (Huey), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

A bit more than an hour before I go home.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

Breakfast should be starting shortly too, so that's good.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

I always try to grab a danish and a coffee on my way out the door.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't even run the audit yet. lol

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

A guy gave me a free pizza earlier

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

It was pretty ok.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

Here comes the first of two breakfast ladies.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

OK, I guess I'd better run this damn audit.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe I'll get a bagel.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

Nope, no bagel.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

But I'm having a yogurt!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

Well, not quite yet.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

Now I'm having a yogurt.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:41 (eighteen years ago)

I wish I could have had computer access when I was working graveyard shifts.

The Reverend, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

Think of the exciting commentary that might have wrought.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

How's the 'gurt, Hoos?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

I did this at Kinko's and at the radio station. At Kinko's, the machines would start sound like voices in the parking lot. At the station, I saw a ghost walk past the door window.

Pleasant Plains, Sunday, 23 December 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

I just finished reading Batman: Year One.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

Also had a chocolate muffin.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

Next I may start reading one of the books I was gifted this weekend. A friend got me "This is Your Brain On Music: The Science of a Human Obsession." Looks interesting.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

you working again this morning ?

Ste, Monday, 24 December 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

(are you santa?)

Ste, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

I am working again this morning. They're finally hiring a new guy, they just needed me to cover a couple weekends while they found/trained somebody.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

Blitzen can get really finicky, you gotta learn how to handle him.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

And if you fall idle, you can always check your 'open loops':

GTD

Bob Six, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

That's the problem, man. Now that I "get stuff done," I have a bunch of free time. Great when I want to hang with friends or whatever, but free time is not great when it's 5:00 am Christmas Eve morning and you've got all "stuff" done.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

But it makes it so I've got time to read and whatnot, so I'm not complaining.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:33 (eighteen years ago)

are you on your own?

Ste, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

(x-post)

Yes, that's why I have a love/hate attitude to GTD. It's ok for robots - all they do in downtime is put themselves on standby.

I think the 'Life Balance software is probably healthier, but haven't explored it yet (and its $80)

Bob Six, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

Open loops at the moment:

-Send your own xmas cards next year! Mom took your name off the family cards cause you're OLD now.

-Leave note re: direct deposit @ work.

-Leave note re: double shift (?!) @ work. (I'm getting off at 7 am this morning, and they have me scheduled to come back in at 3 pm this afternoon!)

-Article Topic: Xmas Jazz Albums

-Scotch Salmon for dinner Wed

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, just me until the breakfast ladies show up, which'll be in about twenty minutes I think. xp

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

we should have a 'post your open loops' thread

Bob Six, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

lol

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:42 (eighteen years ago)

Ok so the boss may or may not make it in before I peace out @ 7. Should I put away the chair and put on my tie on the off chance I'll see him y/n

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

"put on my tie on"

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

I love the cryptic no-context notes I leave myself that I have to decode at processing time. For instance, omitted from my open loops cause I didn't know what the hell the note referred to:

-Albinos in mntns! Hick with guns?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

i am back for the second half of this double

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

hoos, it looks like you and me holding it down for america this xmas

El Tomboto, Monday, 24 December 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

I'm out in about an hour, be back bright and early though

El Tomboto, Monday, 24 December 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

We are Great Americans.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

They need their hotel cookies, dammit.

Abbott, Monday, 24 December 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

They might need HOOS to kick a junkie or a homophobe or Lupe Fiasco out!

The Reverend, Monday, 24 December 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

back again

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 30 December 2007 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

Well, time won't wait, better open the gate
Get up and start what needs to be done
It's running down, there's much you missed
Working on that graveyard shift

Pleasant Plains, Sunday, 30 December 2007 05:19 (eighteen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 January 2008 08:43 (eighteen years ago)

I always imagine graveyard shift is great cause you can listen to music and/or read and/or surf the net

stevienixed, Saturday, 12 January 2008 08:53 (eighteen years ago)

It's usually great for precisely those reasons, but tonight is the night all our mismanagement issues came to a head simultaneously.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 January 2008 09:08 (eighteen years ago)

to wit:

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 January 2008 09:08 (eighteen years ago)

-we just had ANOTHER car breakin (4th in 2 months, lost count in the two years i've been here). we still have no security cameras in the parking lot.

-i can't get ahold of our security guard. he has a history of sleeping in his car during his shift and/or using our rooms to smoke a blunt. i will never begrudge a dude for smoking a blunt, but the motherfucker that's supposed to be stopping breakins and shit is MIA. can't get him on the walkie, and i don't have his cell phone number.

-i've just called four different managers to see if someone can get me dude's cell number. none of them answered, despite their universal promises to "answer EVERY TIME YOU CALL, NO MATTER WHEN." none have called back. it's been an hour.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 January 2008 09:11 (eighteen years ago)

can't get him on the walkie, and i don't have his cell phone number.

i have also walked the parking lot and the floors tryna find dude and he is nowhere to be found. even our "head security" guy is not answering his fucking phone.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 January 2008 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

-i am locked out of the computer i need to access to do the nightly system reset/rollover.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 January 2008 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

i am so applying for another job elsewhere in the morning

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 January 2008 09:15 (eighteen years ago)

totally not even worth it what with only being in this industry for another 6 months anyway but wtf i need a check and i don't want to get it here anymore

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 January 2008 09:16 (eighteen years ago)

hoos, just come and work for the govt

El Tomboto, Saturday, 12 January 2008 09:18 (eighteen years ago)

same bulshit you're dealing with now but the $$$ is $$$$$$$$

El Tomboto, Saturday, 12 January 2008 09:18 (eighteen years ago)

AND NOW SOME1 JUST THREW UP IN MY ELEVATOR

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 January 2008 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 January 2008 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

i just saw 'i am legend' today too, keep waiting on the zombies to break down my door

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 January 2008 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

security dude would probably feel pretty bad about that actually

J0rdan S., Saturday, 12 January 2008 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

i'm sure he does, but it's not the first time he's had his head in the sand while somebody's gotten broken into.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 January 2008 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

i was talking about the zombies, but true

J0rdan S., Saturday, 12 January 2008 11:20 (eighteen years ago)
