DONALD RUMSFELD, TONY BLAIR, GEOFFREY HOON, GEORGE W. BUSH: are they accountable?

have we truckled too far? no one resigns - they fudge and sometimes apologise, but it seems the people in power are now untouchable, and the electorate are impotent, absolutely unable to influence things, largely because the major oppostions in USA and UK aligned themselves with Bush and Blair at the time of going to war, making them tip-toe around the disastrous consequences. i realize i'm not saying anything original. just find it all particularly depressing this afternoon..

Rumsfeld said he "took responsibility" for the repeated torturings and sexual assaults. It's hard to tell precisely what he means by that.

i think, tracer, that he meant "i'm not resigning, so fuck off"

Once more of it comes out on the British side of things, I'll be surprised if Hoon is able to remain. Though admittedly, Parliament is not always razor-sharp in holding ministers to account, I would hope on such issues, it will prove effective...

There is open talk of Blair being out in the summer, and just now, this seems highly plausible. Note always how careful Gordon Brown has been not to associate himself with the Iraq war; he did eventually give his backing, but has rarely spoken about the war/crisis, right from early last year.

Paul Martin, Prime Minister of Canada, is accountable only to Bono.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Shannon Hoon is accountable for "No Rain".
