RSI: non-traditional hand-shaking

so how many of you in this bitch have RSI and how severe is it?

my right wrist/arm is pretty fucked. a lot of the time now i get a real straining pain going right from just near the biceps all the way to the underside of the forearm and finally linking to the ring finger, it's almost as if the tendon is too short or something. it's nothing severe but i'm guessing that when i get older it'll only get worse.

every now and then i would wake up and there'd be no strength able to be generated from the right wrist altogether. i felt really hapless one time defeated by a tight coke bottle and i was goddam hungover and thirsty.

how bad is it for you? is it impacting your life?

prepare to be locked down mofos

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Ken is this from bowling or typing? Or do I not want to know.
Possible solution: wear one of those bowler-wrist-guards at all times.

have you seen a doctor? I thought I had RSI and it turned out to be a misaligned shoulder/elbow bumping against my nerve, a visit to the chiro fixed it.

RSI is very hard to proove you know. how is your desk at work? or is it bowling/playstation/[deleted] related?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i should see a doctor about it really.. it quite possibly is bowling and playstation related! And all kinds of other sports related injuries goalkeeping/darts/tossing the caber.

Although misaligned elbow may explain this also. i really should register myself with a GP one of these days...

i did used to do a lot of typing back in the day too so it certainly doesn't help. and OMG i'm so getting one of those pro-bowler wrist things

Is ILX going to let me post something, anything, one thing today???

GO SEE YER FREAKING DOCTOR. NOW. BEFORE IT BECOMES SERIOUS. I AM HAVING FREAKING SURGERY ON FRIDAY BECAUSE OF LONG TERM HAND DAMAGE.

This will not post so I don't know why I bothered typing it out.

my right hand used to cramp up from time to time, especially when gripping was involved. so i switched to using the mouse at work left-handedly and it's been fine ever since. (this also stops other people from using your computer...)

five months pass...
it's been really bad in the past couple or days.. i woke up this morning and i couldn't turn the tap with my right hand. maybe i had just overexercised it when gripping the handrails on the rollercoasters at blackpool (and holding the steering wheel on the 3 hour drives each way).

Although it seems to have started getting bad again before that, and i did just buy GTA3 san andreas and have been playing it for long periods of time..

or maybe it's the changing of the seasons.. i really should register with a local GP sometime soon. i'm resting my arm for now. advice appreciated!

Damn, I was hoping this was the thread where Dan Perry said "White people be deconstructing handshakes".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 November 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, have you ever had a hand massage?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 November 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

does that help? like just massaging my own hand? or from a massage place (non-dodgy ones)?

p.s. RFI: non-traditional hand-shaking.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 8 November 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the mouse hurts my hand much more than typing ever did, too. maybe the table is too high/low for the mouse. typing seems comfortable but using the mouse really puts strain on my right arm and wrist

ken c (ken c), Monday, 8 November 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Massaging your own hands & wrists as well as stretching helps A WHOLE LOT. Going to get one from a pro might not be a bad idea to learn what to do, or just look some stuff up online.

(haha, I was also thinking this was going to be that other thread)

using the scroll wheel with my ring finger seems to help a lot - i think it exercises a finger that i never would otherwise use.. and all the while giving my other more heavy duty fingers a break.

but i've come to realise the problem comes mainly indeed from my elbow and shoulder rather than the wrist itself (even though it also has its troubles)

still haven't gone to GP - but i won't really know what to tell the GP if I see one.

switch your mouse to the other side for a while. It takes a couple of days to get used to using your other hand, but can save you some pain.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

mouses are notoriously bad. You can get a swivel arm with a padded cup at the end. This attaches to your desk and supports your elbow so that you move the mouse by swinging your whole arm from the shoulder not twitching your wrist. This helps.
