Is it possible to permanently change your voice?

My cousin began speaking in a very low masculine register a few years ago and it seems to have become his real speaking voice, but who knows? His voice was pretty deep before, anyway...

Is it possible to alter the tone / pitch of your voice? I don't mean people who can 'do voices,' i mean, is there a way to change you voice through exercises? Excluding pills and testosterone shots?

getting punched in the throat is a good way to do it

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Thursday, 13 May 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

or smoking lots of cigarettes.

then when you get throat cancer you can get one of those mad little electronic voice boxes :)

and you'll be in BIG demand from, like, every techno and electroclash band ever.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 13 May 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, whats stopping us? :)

I've been wanting to do it for years. Some days my voice will raise 1-2 octaves and I've no idea why. Then, some mornings it'll drop an octave or two and I'm happy with that, but after a while it goes back up again.

Anyway, I researched my arse off and found nothing.

guatemalan elective surgery

there's always sweet sweet helium

autovac (autovac), Thursday, 13 May 2004 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree with roger, taking pills to alter your bodies chemicals should work, but you may have to keep taking them to have your voice altered forever... and there may be some unwanted side effects.

todd swiss (eliti), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

like big muscles and tons of energy and strength?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

chop yer nuts off

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, Autumn, you really researched this?

i'm with ya man. I'm a vain fuck, i would not change a single thing about my appearance, but I'd definitely change my speaking voice if i could. I find folks are never as scared of me as they rightfully should be.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, i actually think my voice is probably the best thing about me.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, Autumn, you really researched this?

Yep. It's the hardest thing in the world to find information about.

That's exactly it, I just want a deeper voice. Not Barry White deep, just deeper than the wanky squeak I've got now.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

my voice isn't high, it has that hollowed out lilt to it - i can't explain it, but it gets higher when i'm making a point. anyway i hate it - its why i quit doing radio in college

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

You too? Are we the same person? I couldn't get into radio production school because my voice wasn't good enough.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

And yeah, it's not pitch so much as timbre. My voice is very weak and crappy. I could do with it just having a better quality, or more resonance or something.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

two words:
sinuses
diaphragm

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i would like to kick my sinuses in the nads

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

your sinuses have nads? ewww.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh, Orbit, that reminds me.

Three years ago I had an operation to remove large chunks of membrane from my nasal cavity, in order to reduce the vast quantities of snot gushing from my nose. Not only did it keep the allergy in check, and eliminating my cat allergy, but it significantly improved the quality of my voice.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i rest my case.
(i love saying that)

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

where can i get this operation?

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

See an ear/nose/throat specialist.

Voice changing book!

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

clarify - sinuses and diaphragm. Am i to understand these two go hand in hand in some perverse ritual? Or do you mean, "speak from your diphragm," and "get a cold?"

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember a story about a woman in the states who woke up with a british accent. This is the only mention I could find on the story though

kelly, Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

was this operation expensive? i think i might go get it

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't remember what it cost, it was all covered by private health. All I had to pay for was the anaesthetic, which was about $150.

Roger: Speak from your diaphragm. Work your stomach muscles. Like what singers do when they do the singing thing. Damn good advice, Orbit. Think I'll give it a go too.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the book seems like it warns against worrying about the actual depth of your voice. It seems tailor made for meek people. I'm not meek, i'm always the star of the goddam show. I just wish my voice was cooler.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

to have a strong voice you need the physical equipment of clear sinuses. Try taking a Sudafed an hour before you have to sing and tell me if you don't believe me. Sinsuses=resonance

you also have to know how to use your diaphragm muscle to support the air you are moving thru the sinuses so you don't sound thin, strained, weak. Diaphragm = the bellows that move the air to provide the resonance but this DOES NOT MEAN PUSH. Support. Lessons help here.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Urgh you're right, it looks very wanky-management stylee. Yuck.

xpost

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

leeeetle tricks:

Sinsues: Sudafed and an appt to see if you have polyps and then get them removed. Flonase spray to reduce swelling.

Diaphragm: Pay attention to how you breathe first thing in the morning when you wake up. It's from deep, around your waist. Put a book on your belly button, breathe deep to raise it. Hold it up there. Release. Repeat. Once the muscle is stronger, take a breath, expand. Speak or sing WHILE HOLDING IT OUT. Collapse. Repeat.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

what's polyps?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

are they like adenoids?

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

no they are annoying extraneous tissue in your sinuses that block them. Sinus blisters. Usually under the eye/near the side of the nose

yes bri, that *is* helpful....

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh. Maybe a polyp was that thing wot I snotted out of my nose once, after which I could breathe for the first time in months. It was like a hard little pea shaped bit of cartelidge. Yuuuck. Hurt like hell popping out but man it made a difference.

Now I'm all stuffed up again, but I think I have food intolerances that exacerbate my sinuses, and of course I dont avoid said foods (curry and wine, I hate you) do I?

I have a nasaly whine, somewhat Liz Fraserish in tone only nowhere near as interesting.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 13 May 2004 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a strange thread.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Radiation treatments do a good job too!

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 13 May 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Singers' voices tend to get deeper as time goes on. Check out David Bowie's steady shift from "elf" to "dark lord" over the course of ten records.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 13 May 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Singers' voices tend to get deeper as time goes on.

Unless you're Perry Farrell.

You can expand the range of your voice.. you can probably change the pitch/timbre of your voice slightly just by doing voice exercises, but it won't be an enormous change

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 15 May 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

According to my voice teacher you can. She said when she was in college her voice teacher said she needed a lower speaking voice to be taken seriously and be sexy and such so she did exercises and was just very conscious of how she was speaking all the time and she made her speaking voice go lower than her singing voice. She also said it was a mistake but she hasn't been able to change it back.
