The GO thread! (wei-qi, baduk, etc)

OK! I realise that there's another thread for Go already, but this one will have exciting Korean names in the topic so people can search for it. Also, I can't find it.

Do you play Go? Isn't it great? Do you have a grade? Do you fancy a game?

If you don't, why don't you learn? Here (requires java), or here (non-java)? It's dead simple!

I am avoiding work.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I have played one game of this ever. I lost 17-0 and was discouraged.
Once I sat in a hotel room in China and watched live televised Go.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how it's on TV in asia! Pros make as much as top tennis players here, it's insane.

People who play beginners and then crush them sadden me :(

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's the other thread: Go!! My response to it may have changed the course of history.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the old saying? "Be sure to lose your first 50 games of Go quickly." I have a go board and am curious but actually it kinda seems boring. Anyway I haven't gotten my head around it yet.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

go-moku is the superior game, you know.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll stick with Pente.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not as exciting as I previously fantasized, but I'm still learning how to play it.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Responses, whoot! I am made glad.

That thread is good! I have actually taught Go to at least one poster on it, too, which makes me feel all missionary-like, and that. And I promise it's great, Chris - I'm an English major and everything. (Also the "it's great drunk" tip on that thread is U&K). Perhaps there should be some kind of interweb ILX learner tournament, where people who've played more than, like, twice would be banned from entering? Would anyone be interested?

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I would, but I don't live near anyone.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Rxy, that site possibly neglects to mention that it is played by CRAZY AGED MEN who speak ENTIRELY IN INSCRUTABLE PROVERBS and have MOUSTACHES. (Also they levitate).

x-post: That is the wonder of the internet, dude! It would be, like, virtual.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't even gone to that site, I'm learning in REAL LIFE! omgwtf

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweet! I am so up for this, there are loads of really good free go servers.

(Also, I am intrigued by Tracer's NEURONINJAESTHEIC GOBRANE).

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

You're an English major and everything? What?

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

AND EVERYTHING

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I ws just trying to say that it's not just for Big Scary Maths Types :(

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. I was an English major and I have never had any sort of math phobia, so I never put much stock in the math/lit dichotomy.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ditto. I find math/literature equally beautiful and interesting.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I was pretty much a maths bod until, like, fifteen, when a combination of puberty and ceilings and gurls contrived to get me into lit in a big way... (I was actually being totally lame and disingenous, I will make to big apologize).

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been playing loads!

I really like this puzzle, the solution is dead obvious when you've seen but I didn't get it at all. (Also, the site in general is great for puzzles of all levels).

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night I dreamt that Matt DC was giving an online lecture on shape points, wtf? I've never even seen a photo of him.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

do they really call it "English majors" in Oxford?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Go is so amazing! I learnt about it the (possibly lame) obvious way of seeing the film Pi, and went about finding out how it works - chess confuses me horribly so I liked the idea Go is more organic and somewhat less logical. I have tried playing a simplified 9x9 square pc version but Im still really shit at it.

However it is one of my dreams to own a huge carved wooden Go board that can sit atop my coffee table (or AS a coffee table, even better) for people to tool with when they visit. Lovely game.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Ken, we call it "a scent of the sweet rose of verse and the harsh lilac of prose, that grow in the verdant garden of English literature pass me that punt". Obv.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I, also, would love to be able to play Go well, but am really shit at it.

(I seem to remember that I tried playing against Gregory once, and he beat me hollow)

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Trayce, have you tried Igowin? It's a cute little windows 9x9 opponent that gets better as you beat it, it's great!

I love those giant boards, they're totally sweet. Especially the rosewood ones, omg.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Cait, KGS! It's totally the way the way to get better without risking face-to-face shamery. And it's cross-platform!

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Ken, we call it "a scent of the sweet rose of verse and the harsh lilac of prose, that grow in the verdant garden of English literature pass me that punt". Obv.

Gregory Henry ASOTSROVATHLOPTGITVGOELPMTP.

Sure beats a BSc!!!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I just ask - is it actually form when observing someone playing Go (for the first time or not) to comment on their game and give you (unwanted in my case) advice? I haven't played it since someone interfered with my game to such an extent I might as well have sat back and let them play for me. They then tried to insist it was some kind of I DUNNO HIPPY BOLLOCKS PHILOSOPHY and I had to quickly drink the remaining GIN and leave the house. So yes. Go is alright I guess but not as good as Scrabble.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Gregory -yes, it is igowin that I have indeed! I dont play it enough though. I note it gives one a handicap that improves as you get better. I should have at it some more.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

thank you JuliaA, you are so nice! :-D

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 15 November 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I have played this before!!! haha!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 15 November 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I am kinda annoying on this thread! Oops.

Anyway, you should totally play, dude.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 15 November 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

also, you get to learn cool words like 'tenuki' (which is a sort of move), which literally means 'demon testicles' or something like that.

which i find amusing because i am easily amused.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 15 November 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd forgotten the matt dc dream!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 15 November 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Cozen, next time we chat, please badger me about playing this.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 15 November 2004 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the ear-reddening move!!!

haha I totally forgot about that story.

go club turned me off go.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not the go club!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not the go club!

Peter Stooly, Thursday, 9 June 2005 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

i suck at this but am trying to lose my first 50 games quickly.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 9 December 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

I bought a go set for my cousin, who at the time was a 12-year-old junior state chess champ. He'd never heard of it before. I explained the rules to him and we sat down to a game. I was beating him for about 10 moves but after that he started to get the hang of it and crushed me. Very embarrassing. Don't even get me started on Set.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 9 December 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

Set is great! I love how anyone can pick it up, then go on and beat an experienced player. There seems to be no correlation between many conventional conceptions of intelligence and one's ability to play it. I guess it's all about pattern recognition.

Neil S, Sunday, 9 December 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

I don't love how eight-year-olds humiliate me at it!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 9 December 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

something tells me that googling "set game" is only going to turn up a lot of tennis results. info plz?

Oilyrags, Sunday, 9 December 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

This is the only game I want to learn how to play some day.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 9 December 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

A good site on it here:
http://www.setgame.com/set/

Neil S, Monday, 10 December 2007 10:05 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Finally won a game last night on a half-board, am learning to recognize really basic shit like ladders and nets intuitively.

Anybody down for a game? Is there a Go Facebook app?

been HOOS, where yyyou steene!? (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 2 March 2009 06:33 (seventeen years ago)

There is a Go facebook app!

been HOOS, where yyyou steene!? (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 2 March 2009 06:37 (seventeen years ago)

I installed a Go for my iPod touch... the only drawback is it doesnt have any kind of handicap or "easy" mode so I keep getting badly pwned. Ive played Go on and off for some time and I still don't think I "get" it.

one art, please (Trayce), Monday, 2 March 2009 08:30 (seventeen years ago)

I have never played go but have been vaguely interested in it for some time.

51 things I hate about you (The Reverend), Monday, 2 March 2009 08:32 (seventeen years ago)

I've played it off and on for a long time. My attitude to it changes - at the moment I've not really into the competitiveness angle of it, such as playing against other people in clubs or on the internet, and I'm more into appreciating it aesthetically (as a generator of beautiful patterns.

Bob Six, Monday, 2 March 2009 08:46 (seventeen years ago)

Aaaargh that set puzzle website! Its killing me! AAAAAAA

one art, please (Trayce), Monday, 2 March 2009 09:18 (seventeen years ago)

See I say I'm starting to get the game and then I go and try some of the most basic of basic Life & Death problems and they're just completely arcane to me.

been HOOS, where yyyou steene!? (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 2 March 2009 09:52 (seventeen years ago)

It's frustrating. And the game takes for-fucking-ever.
