Ever joined a fan club?

I was in the Official Carpenters fanclub when I was five, and the Official Runaways fanclub when I was nine. Both times I was just copycatting my older sister, who was furious.

So really, you wanted to be in her fan club.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Official Runaways fanclub when I was nine

I love you.

I've helped run one. can't think of whether or not i ever sent off money to join one. hmmm

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a recent recruit to The Shield Strike Team.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a member of the Dennis The Menace and Gnasher Fang Club!! You get a badge with swivelly eyes on it!! And a club newsletter with special secret codes!!

C J (C J), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Both the Carpenters and Runaways fanclubs were pretty lackluster affairs. Send five dollars, get a poster, a B&W 8X10 (fake signature), a newsletter... I think I still have the Runaways patch.

andy, Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah actually, I am also a member of the Dennis The Menace fan club. Or I was. I have probably been revoked,

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

When I joined the Dennis The Menace Fang Club I told them I was eight. I lied.

C J (C J), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a member of the They Might Be Giants "Info Club" in the late 80s. Not sure if I'm still technically a member or not, since they distribute all their news & shit via email and websites now.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in Club Devo in 1981.

mike a, Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, now that I think of it, I was also in Too Much Joy's fanclub in the early 90s. That one was pretty cool... but I think it was mainly because there weren't enough members to make it a difficult thing for the people who were running it.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Daphne and Celeste!

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

dennis the menace.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Star Wars.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm having a recovered memory about a past affiliation with some Woodsy the Owl brotherhood... I had a patch on my knapsack. I had to pick up a big bag of litter at a campground to qualify.

andy, Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i have been in the rem fanclub for years. this tends to surprise people (including me).

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh and i used to be in some kind of lego club too.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

andy, did you have to send them the bag of litter to join?

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Fegmaniax, an American Robyn Hitchcock fanclub. Got a badge, a tape and a couple of newsletters, but was moving around a lot at the time and lost touch.

briania, Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I did join this club once, but they had this strict rule that I couldn't ever talk about it.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Another Dennis the Menace fanclub member.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

was that an xpost?

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a dennis the menace fan club member too. and he-man. (which was the best - U gotta figure and everything. i got zodiac.)

I also tried to join the Kia-Oro fanclub but found out that it had shut down. i think they sent me some kia-oro vouchers to make up for that...

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Did all you Dennis the Menacers go to annual conventions? You could have all been in the same Chuck E Cheese, playing air hockey, and not even realized your future together on this board.

andy, Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

....perhaps some confusion:

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

infinitely more menacing

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

[Deep breath] I was in the UB40 Fan Club in 81/82. You got a badge, a newsletter and an exclusive information line number for your two quid or whatever it was. I also got free tickets to my first ever gig - UB40 doing BBC's Sight and Sound in Concert at some theatre in Hitchin in sleepy Hertforshire.

Daniel (dancity), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahhhh... once again the wild colonials vanilla-ize another UK creation. Like the Monkees.

(menace xpost)

andy, Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Are we certain that the UK one was first? Because it could be an example of the Brits making a crap colonial invention tougher and cooler.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

well, there was a live action american television show of "dennis the menace" way back even before color, i think.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

That's sort of what I was thinking...surely the cartoon version followed at least somewhat closely behind.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

But that red & black 'jumper' spells 1890's to me. I used to watch the old B&W American show... the neighbor guy was a hater.

andy, Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

1890s?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I joined the Alphaville fanclub in 1986. I got some cool postcards and a letter written in very bad English (they are German) on wicked-looking letterhead.

I don't think I've ever told anyone until now.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

as i found out on the charming Beanotown website, Dennis The Menace (UK) first took the cover in 1951. so he's pretty old.

i think it's just a coincidence. incidentally it was just called Dennis when it was shown on British TV (and at the cinema? I seem to recall there was a movie made of it - with Walter Matthau, perhaps?)

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 13 May 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Bean in Espanol: Senor Frijole.

andy, Thursday, 13 May 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha. Frijoles = Beans. As in plural. ;)
(In reality, Mr. Bean = "SeƱor Bean". Ooh, how exotic. *wink*)

If the official Duran Duran club had still been going in the '90s, I would've joined it. To make up for this, I found a scan of the membership card on the Internet, messed around with the numbers, and printed up a paper version of said card. I also had one of those "special invitation" cards that came along with the 7&TRT cassette which detailed how to join said club. This would've also been during the time I thought I'd been born into the wrong decade.

I guess the closest I've been to really "joining a fan club" is subscribing to mailing lists.

Those Beautiful Lines (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 13 May 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Not strictly a fan club, and I didn't join, but I did get some mail from Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 13 May 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

In America, all men are required to join a fan club when they turn 18. Otherwise they won't let you go to college.
