wow it sucked.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Details?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

it was so boring! no adventuring, just lots of conversations about shrek & fiona's relationship. it was not unlike coffee and cigarettes actually.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

So, what an arty film couple takes their kids to.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Ew.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

They should just buy the Triplets of Belleville dvd at any rate.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't really like Shrek 1 all that much. Any Pixar movie kicks its ass.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, i wasn't a huge fan of the first one but i thought it had its moments, made me laugh a few times and looked kinda neat. boy they fucked up the script on this one though--NOTHING happens! except for a whole lot of angsting and some mild, shitty mistaken identity stuff

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved Shrek if only 'cause I still have a crush on the dragon.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

well the dragon ain't in this one

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

except for a whole lot of angsting and some mild, shitty mistaken identity stuff

So you're saying this could have been the sequel to Waking Life instead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

it's waking life meets coffee & cigarettes meets brother bear.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, i wasn't a huge fan of the first one but i thought it had its moments, made me laugh a few times and looked kinda neat. boy they fucked up the script on this one though--NOTHING happens! except for a whole lot of angsting and some mild, shitty mistaken identity stuff
-- s1ocki (parrisactava...), May 14th, 2004.

Oh well, more money saved!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a 6 year old, there is no possible way I am getting out of seeing this movie.

Help.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Wear subtle earphones and play the soundtrack of another movie over it. Rocky Horror or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicole reminds me that I finally saw Triplets of Belleville last night and I gotta say A) the music is spectacular, B) the animation made me feel like I was having acid flashbacks, C) it is one of the awesomest things ever.

x-post ha ha you and me both grrrl (except mine is 5)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I am however looking forward to The Incredibles.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a shameful confession.

I like Spongebob.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear, m4rk.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

You're not alone, Luna, the lovers are here. So are the haters.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The Spunjbawb movie has the best trailers out right now.

(See, I figure the less talk about Shrek 2, the better.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

there was a trailer for this new cgi movie about sharks that looks like a great big finding nemo rip, only more anthropomorphized

(i guess considering the production timeline on these things it's probably not a rip at all, but that's what it seems like)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't there a disney movie out today with the improbable plot of a bunch of cows banding together to save their ranch from forclosure? did I dream this?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 14 May 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Home On the Range, teeny. It as kinda LAME. Steve Buscemi's character (one of the humans) looks exactly like Steve Buscemi.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 14 May 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that opened and closed on the same night

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally hated Shrek 1, and I cannot believe that supposeable lots of people liked it.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 14 May 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah shrek sucked the big one anyway.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 14 May 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I kinda liked it but it's not aging well. The soundtrack includes so many feel-good-movie-by-numbers songs. It hurts me in my heart that my son knows the words to Smashmouth songs because of it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 14 May 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Stoners get pretty forceful about how great the first one is. Which is sort of impressive, but contributes to why I don't like it.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 14 May 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

incidentally the soundtrack is REALLLY rough (especially that yorn buzzcocks cover, ew)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

we had to listen to the soundtrack at work today!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 May 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

You should have risen in red revolt.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i was so delirious with allergies it could have been merzbow and it wouldnt have registered

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 May 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i hear extreme noise terror and voice crack are on the clifford's really big movie soundtrack

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

These days Extreme Noise Terror probably does nothing but play kids parties anyway.

Opening for the Wiggles near you, soon.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw it too and I agree with everything you said (except for that I found it just a tad less boring than the first one instead of vice versa).

Also, if you're like me and thought Eddie Murphy's "house negro" act was shameful enough in the first one, just wait till you see what happens when he swigs some dream-fulfilling "happily ever after" potion...

(spoiler!)

or don't wait: he turns into a great white stallion. Hot damn.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 15 May 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

When Shrek 1 first came out on DVD, my little cousins replayed the end of it over 10 times in a row. They danced and sang to the song at the end of that movie until their wee cheeks were flushed. So cute.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Saturday, 15 May 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oddly enough, the last time I took the train they showed Shrek in the club car, and when it was over, the kids make the Amtrak people rewind the ending song over and over again. There must be subliminal messages in there.

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 15 May 2004 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

man i really didn't like the first one (way too many Variety kneeslappers for me), and am somehow still disappointed to here this one is disappointing.

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 15 May 2004 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

aha - TAKE THE HINT NED

Ya damned asspunk, I ain't taking no guff from you (if my career Navy officer dad doesn't care, yr complaints are folly!).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 May 2004 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

also setting this one in a half-assed parody of hollywood was so pointless, i mean i was kind of dreading all the LA jokes and they didn't even really come! so it was just this fantasy movie set in a slightly embroidered beverly hills.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 17 May 2004 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Almost completely unrelated (except for a tenuous computer animation link), but GOOD GOD I JUST SAW A PREVIEW FOR SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW AND THAT IS GOING TO BE THE MOST AWESOMEST THING OF ALL FUCKING TIME.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea what Dan is talking about. Is he referring to the fact that I went to college in Williamsburg, VA, or that I'm wearing a trucker cap and nothing else?

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Fire-belching, flying dragon - donkey offspring after the credits rocked.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Embracing Pixar (esp after their public divorce from Disney) and shunning Dreamworks = the new indie tastemaking pose.

(nb I am completely talking shit at this point.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. You are silly.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. Yes I am.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

who cares about animating humans? i'd rather see fish and monsters and dragons and stuff!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

you want cgi humans, go watch final fantasy!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but Shrek has monsters and dragons and... oh, fuck it.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

that's what i'm saying--i'd rather watch the monsters than worry about the poorly-animated humans

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

also that was one of my main problems with shrek 2 (besides the fact that it was totally boring)--more dragons, less stupid humans!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Charming and Fairy Godmother were tolerable enough, though Fiona's human form was a new nadir. How come they can animate a cat so well but can't figure out realistic human motion like walking or running?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It ususally has something to do with the model's gravity being off combined with vagaries in the friction calculations.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

it's that thing where the closer to human an artificial form gets the weirder it looks to us (unless it's perfect). i forget what that's called

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It's called "something to do with the model's gravity being off combined with vagaries in the friction calculations", or "talking completely out of your ass again" for short.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

my ass?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw a preview for the Garfield movie. He looks nothing like garfield.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

they couldn't get the real one

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just human by that theory, slocki? 'Cause the horses and donkeys and frogs and ginger-bread men etc...didn't disappoint only the hewmanns.

The Garfield trailer looked terrifying.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't dissapoint only the hewmanns?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

well they should have tried. yeah the trailer looked pretty bad, i don't think Bill Murray can save it.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

renoir couldn't save that one

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(though i'd like to see him try)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"the terrible thing about life is that everybody has their reasons to hate mondays"

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Garfield movie should be incontrovertible proof of the existence of Satan.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the beasties and such seemed fine. The humans seemed fine at times but don't seem to move as well as the horse (when Donkey is transformed)or the cat or the other non-humans. Even Shrek's hominoid movements look sometimes suspect to me.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey it stars Brekin Meyer as Jon and Jennifer Love Hewitt as the whore. And Jean Claude Van Damme as Odie.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris needs to move to California and become a casting director.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

if it were that easy....

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, see, start in Northridge first and then work up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Garfield movie should be incontrovertible proof of the existence of Satan.

It is such horrible, ugly looking cg. They couldn't even afford to animate Odie, and Garfield looks like a retarded piece of roadkill. I guess all of the budget was probably put into Bill Murray's salary.

Shrek has fine cg, I just don't think it has the depth of Pixar. But it seems silly to say that one is great while the other one is terrible.

REVIVE!!!!

Just seen this and I fucking loved it. So much better than the first one and Puss is Boots/Antonio Banderas is brilliant.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw it on the plane. It wasn't too bad, but there was something missing. Too much Murphy also, but there was still fun to be had.

This was enjoyable, maybe a bit too self-conscious of it's own adult crossover appeal. There really should be a classic fantasy battle of some sort (dragon, orcs, whatever).

Of course, the whole movie is worth it for this:
