How Are The Smells Where You Are?

Vividize them for me.

I work next to a coffee factory (or coffee-packing place?), but I also work only a few blocks from the Bay, thus the odors that abide are of saltwater and Java.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a very neutral work environment here. I appreciate that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

wet earth and cut grass

oops (Oops), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

my room smells pretty bad.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

like body odor, peach pits, and pollen.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

What does pollen smell like? I can't ever smell it...because it's pollen.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Formaldehyde, copier toner, coffee, and pumpkin pie.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

like snot and itchy eyes

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

oh christ we have an ethanol plant in town so it often smells of rancid burnt toast.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

NYC summers smell like pee and garbage.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

these all sound like awful prog rock album titles.

oops (Oops), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry for the redundancy

oops (Oops), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that about NYC though! It's like you're not even breathing. The only thing to compare is Barcelona, which in summer smells like vomit and dead rodents.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting you ask. I live walking distance from the largest man-made landfil in the entire world. No exaggeration here, folks - it's a fact. You can see it, along with the Great Wall of China, from space. It's called Fresh Kills, look it up. Anyway we live about a block away. On damp summer nights you can't even go outside because the smell is so unbearable.

We're leaving in August.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Uhh... my roommate's got a digestive problem so I've got to keep the door to the hallway shut, lest I be bombarded with a distinctly intestinal odor.

I live next to Somerville hospital so often a waft of antiseptic chemicals enters my room. There's a pear tree underneath my window and when the sun cooks the leaves it smells orchardish.

Otherwise we've got a middle-eastern themed hodgepodge: my neighbor's currently BBQing eggplant for baba ghanoush, and today the compost heap next door smells of new cantalope when the wind blows.

Overall ... pleasent.

x Jeremy (Atila the Honeybun), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

jesus, roger, no wonder you are moving. what took you so long?

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Philly in the summer often smelled like the depths of hell.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, i think everyone should start rating their environments on an olfactory scale of 1 to 10.

Mine-8

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah philly in the summer is a bit like camping out in the sluice drain of a slaughterhouse

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I work next to a coffee factory (or coffee-packing place?), but I also work only a few blocks from the Bay, thus the odors that abide are of saltwater and Java.

The Bay is freshwater runoff from the Sierra Mountains via the Sacramento river delta, perhaps the high saline atmosphere is a byproduct of the Emeryville waste reclamation plant?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

oh go away you big pedant.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It smells like water, then. It's a watery smell.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

You are just jealous of my smells.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

actually there is a flux of seawater into the bay, i'm just kidding you! :-D

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I knew it was salty. Not all of us are science guys.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What does Tennessee smell like? Please say BBQ and bourbon.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

This spring started off daffodils, right now it's honeysuckle and jasmine, and in a few weeks the big gardenia by the back door will be in bloom.

...aside from that, armpits.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

motor oil

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Nepalese restaurant!!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Every time I go to Memphis, I'll be driving along and catch a whiff of something awesome. I say "fucking hell, where is that coming from? I have to go eat there!" But I usually can't find the source.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I was interviewed live on TV at the 1997 Memphis BBQ festival.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

What does Tennessee smell like? Please say BBQ and bourbon.

My neighborhood = flowers, fabric softener, and smoke.
Downtown Knoxville = roasted coffee beans, smoke.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

This year's is happening right now. I thought about driving up to review a bunch of 'cue for Pumpkin, but it would cost $25 just for the gas to drive up and back.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that's right. it would have been about this time 7 years ago now. My my.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Venice, CA

Jasmine, gardenias, roses, ocean. Occasional incense/ganja.

Skottie, Friday, 14 May 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Did I say jasmine? I meant Yasmine. Bleeth. After the arrest.

Skottie, Friday, 14 May 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

P.U.!

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I cleaned the kitchen this evening and there's a faint whiff of bleach still coming from the plugholes. If I step outside my door I can either smell the Tennants brewery or British Bakeries, depending on which way the wind is blowing.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 14 May 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Now it's chamomile tea and copier toner. Nice!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 14 May 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I waited on Yasmin Bleeth once. The 2 friends she was with were way cuter, nicer and friendlier.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 May 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The smell in the subway today was a treat - eight fucking stops of unwashed ass.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 15 May 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Strangely, my place smells of absolutely nothing right now. But usually the flat smells of a mix of incense, stale cig smoke and cat litter. The neighbourhood has smells of bagels and deli items, drives me crazy when walking to the tram and I havent had breakfast.

At work, I'm nearby to a yeast making factory so sometimes the whole suburb wiffs of a sort of rotten apple/bread/fermenting smell.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 15 May 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple blossoms and in a few days lilacs. The barn smell of cows and milk never ceases to impress me when I first walk in the door.

On a bit of a downer, though, is the aroma of skunks doing their thing beneath my other workplace. But on a bit of an upper, it kinda smells a bit like the Molson Brewery.

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

As we dont have them in Aus, I have gladly never smelt a skunk. Are they as foul as is always suggested?

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, but still there's the bit about Molson. It is their only redeeming value.

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, I can't really smell very well. It smells fine. Sadly we don't live that close to the Franz bakery, or it would smell like heavenly yeasty goodness (though I guess it would probably get old after a few years).

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

God I thought you meant skunks smelt fine for a sec there!

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 15 May 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

nothing can match the smell of an NYC subway station on a hot day.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 15 May 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Trayce, you really should smell a skunk some time. It's not to be forgotten. There are different methods. One, albeit unfortunate for all parties, is to run over one on the highway. This obv. kills the innocent, if stinky creature. BUT, it has its revenge when the odor creeps in the vents of your car nearly paralyzing you with stink.

I 'spose you could be sprayed with its essence at close range too. This would cause no death, but you'd wish you were dead.

But Aust. has lots of unusual creatures of its own, many deadly. So don't feel bad.

Skottie, Saturday, 15 May 2004 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think we have any quite that stinky though.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Saturday, 15 May 2004 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The other important quality of the skunk stink is its longevity. The smell lasts and lasts. You can't wash it off easily. It can take days to wear off. And a dead skunk on the side of the road. Ugh. An olefactory beacon in the night.

Skottie, Saturday, 15 May 2004 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

God I thought you meant skunks smelt fine for a sec there!

I don't mind skunk smell, actually.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 16 May 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Whew, I thought I was the only one.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 16 May 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I nearly enjoy it. Reminds me of youth.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 16 May 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the PATH stations might smell worse.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 16 May 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the NJT commuter rail gets kinda gamey too.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 16 May 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the PATH stations might smell worse.

funny that you should mention that ... b/c at the 14th street PATH station, i CAN smell the difference b/w it and the NYC subway station to which it is connected. dunno which is worse ... but they are DIFFERENT stinks.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 16 May 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
bump

rainy (rainy), Sunday, 5 September 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
We just had a skunk catcher come catch 3 skunks in our yard. Now it's pungent around our place. When I came to work I asked my officemate if I smell like a skunk. He didn't notice it, but now that my pepe le PU odeur has permeated the room, he smells it.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Scott & I shouldn't go out tonight after all.
