GTA Vice City - Little Hidden Joys

Here's a thread for all the little hidden joys you found in this lovely game, before the new one opens up even more.

Car surfing - jump on a car and start a ruckus. Then see how long you can stay on as the car speeds away in a hail of police gunfire and the driver goes mad.

Taxi Rodea - jump onto a Kaufman Cab and drive a chainsaw through the roof. Similar to car surfing but oddly more satisfying as you spur your beast on to terrifying speeds.

There's a wall of death at the airport. I just found this today.

I'm all about small pleasures, like driving a PCJ from the docks all the way north and up the stairway to over the Ammunation shop.

I was suprised to realise recently trhat I prefer Liberty City to Vice City, as places.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 14 May 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, it's a much better city. Vice City has no soul. It's just a sprawling mess.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 14 May 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It's been so long since I've played it, I can barely remember. besides, Vice City has a pulsing neon soul of heady disco and diverse listening pleasure.

Vic Fluro, Saturday, 15 May 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You can do the car surfing in Simpsons Hit N Run too - its really funny seeing Marge on a car roof.

If you have it for PC, check out the cheat codes. One that I remember reduced the amount of gravity; so that when any car would go over a bump or a ramp, it would stay in the air quite a bit, creating a 'Dukes of Hazzard' cinematic kind of effect. The most fun to have with this is to get a wanted level of 2 or 3 stars so that you have the cops chasing after you pretty constantly, and then lead them on a goose chase around the city. They'll be literally soaring through the air, as they try to catch you.

Another cheat allows your car to drive on water; the car wheels rotate 90 degrees (as in the final scene of 'Back to the Future'). Much faster to get from island to island and much easier to control than the boats.

57 7th (calstars), Saturday, 15 May 2004 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

A word of caution though, don't save your game with the cheats enabled. I believe it messes with some essential game files.

57 7th (calstars), Saturday, 15 May 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the reason Liberty city is > than Vice city = more hills

chris (chris), Monday, 17 May 2004 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yesterday I found it quite satisfying knocking down the Cuban gangs with the firetruck water cannon.

Attempting the vigilante missions with the radar turned off.

Going mad with a tank, maintaining FBI criminal status by picking up the bribes, smashing into FBI cars at full pelt.

doing donuts with the PCJ bike, with one of your henchmen on the back.

Attemping to keep your 3 henchmen on a boat.

standing in a pizza house with a flame thrower, you know the rest.

tank dodging

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 17 May 2004 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(hello i might be being stupid, but when you nick the fire engine and do R3 missions, how do you put the fires out? is there just blue circles you have to drive to?)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 17 May 2004 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

press the 'O' button to spray the water and control the cannon with the R3 analogue stick.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 17 May 2004 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

hurrah!

although having got Civ III: Conquests as a birthday present, it may be some time before i go back to GTA...

time to revive the Civilisation III thread i think...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 17 May 2004 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

its cool to complete the firetruck missions coz you then become fireproof, which means great fun with the molotovs.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 17 May 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend told me that Vice City has lots of in-jokes for Edinburgh residents. I'm not entirely sure what, though.

I just piucked this up 2 days ago. It's early days for me yet (I'm trying to catch up w/ and flatten the pizza delivery guy @ the moment) but it's fukcing great!! best bit so far = when you go to the clothes shop in yr jeans and hawaii shirt, and come out in yr new miami vice splendour.

A cop car drove past the house a little while ago, and I got ph34r!! Terrible!!

(+I keep subconciously trying to drive on the left haha)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You can do the car surfing in Simpsons Hit N Run too - its really funny seeing Marge on a car roof.

The best is when you are playing as Apu, if you let the controls idle while he's car-surfing, he'll A) levitate and B) breakdance.

there are certainly lots of Scouse in-jokes

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

on a motorcycle, you can use oncoming sportscars as ramps

g--ff (gcannon), Thursday, 22 July 2004 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yesterday I managed to relocate one of the bouys from the sea onto the main road by bazookering it across the beach.

I like to start the dirt-track mission with the sanchez and then lure the 3 gang bikers onto the main city. sometimes when they get off their bikes they hijack other cars and hunt you down christine-style.

I found the submarine! line yrself up w/the western edge of the north point mall in a helicopter, and fly directly north. It's pretty sinister.

Favourite bit so far = get onto the big ship, pick up the "destroy 10 vehicles w/this rpg7" rampage, fail it a couple of times, 'till you get the fbi after you, then stand at the top of the gangplank, blowing up those black fbi vans and shooting down police helicopters until you either go down in a blaze of glory, or pass the rampage, so all yr wanted stars vanish, heh teh copz = pwnt. (IE this = revenge for all the times the cops beat my ass w/their tyre spikers etc)

I failed the tank mission, b/c I spent too long going round running over police cars, so the tank self-destructed. Just before it blew, I got the recorded message "prepare to die, communist"!!

how do you get a motorbike to do a wheelie?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 25 December 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

um, you just pull back on the analogue stick when you've got a bit of speed up...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 27 December 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ergh, I'm playing it on PC! (sorry, should have mentioned this)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 27 December 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
Wheelie on a PC = press number pad "6"

I just wasted the mob guy, and got the end credits. VC=PWND.

I'll probably try to find all the hidden pax0rages (i have 60) and nmaybe find all the stunt jumps, but I don't think I'll bother w/the 100% thing, b/c I can't be arsed w/pizza/ambulance/fire truck missions.

the best bits:

1/"rusty brown's ring doughnuts" radio ad. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard that.

2/michelle montanius "If you're listening to VCPR and haven't donated money YOU.ARE. A. THIEF."

3/ the submarine

4/the genuine sense of horror i got when I first drove one of the speedboats over one of the big sunken ships.

5/cackling w/glee when I shot the SWAT helicopter down and its tail rotor came off and it went spinning down to the ground.

6.....all sorts of other stuff. This game has been an absolute blast.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. WTF are you supposed to do w/the army base near the airport? Are there any lists of cheat codes for the PC online (all i can find are console codez) I want to turn a car into a submarine, and go exploring underwater.

My dear wife is into this game as well, but she doen't give a shit about the missions, all she does is load in a game where T.V. is tooled up mightily, climb on the roof near scumhole shack and blow shit up 'till she gets 6 stars and the army come after her.

I saw a r/c lamborghini in the window of a model shop, and I was like "look! a model infernus!!" argh haha.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sometimes I like to wear womens panties and walk down 5th street"

The radio station in VC is a bullion times better than San Andreas

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The army base houses the tank and Hunter, once unlocked. Also a large machine gun and armour. That's about it though. You can get in there wearing the cop uniform

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

VCPR is great, actually. I wish it was a real radio station. The "pressing issues" presenter, thingy Chavez, he's absolutely brilliant.

The greatness of KCHAT kind of crept up on me, as well. The way the presenter is horrible to jezz torrent's g/f, the way the footballer is obnoxious about her facial hair, then immediately backs down when she gets snippy with him, the whole "mr zoo" section OMG WRONG. and so on.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Well hello there Danny, I didn't know it was hockey season?"

"There's blood and pubic hair all over the studio"

Oh and the Chatterbox station in GTA3, where the guy talks about karate. Such a funny man.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Now I'm just about done w/this game. I did go and steal the apache hunter helicopter from the army base, and I managed to shoot down the little plane that flies round trailing an advertising banner. It was pretty funny flying around watching cop cars and fbi wagons milling around on the ground for a whil. I managed to damage the helicopter, so I went back to the army base to pick up another. As I was getting into it, this cop turned up and pushed a tyre spiker under it! Kind of futile...

On various pc games I've played in the past, there has been some way of capturing a screenshot by pressing a certain key. Can you do this on GTA:VC, and which key do you press?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 10 February 2005 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

have you done the vigilante missions in the Hunter? completing a few of these levels will repair any damage sustained to the helicopter.

I just played this for a while at lunch. Laughing at "BIG HAIRY ARSES".

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 10 February 2005 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

So, where in Latin are you from?

I haven't gotten to the Mafia guy yet! Actually when do I get to the mafia guy, I thought I'd completed all the story missions. Tonight I will find the army base for tank fun!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

oh yes, turn that tank turret backwards, keep firing, and prepare for lift off! Fun when you smash into oncoming FBI vans.

Been playing LCS a lot lately, I woke up Sunday morning fully clothed on my couch (after a very drunken night out) with my PS2 on and my guy on screen just stood there in the middle of the road. It turns out I'd found a hidden package, I don't even remember where.

Ste, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

I did that with a mission at the end once. I think it involved speedboats anda rocket launcher. It was a very nice thing to wake up to!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

this thread has reminded me that i found another red balloon in VCS while playing a mission last night, and did not shoot it.

stevie, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

Oh no, there's not more hidden packages! I am so sick of them.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

five years pass...

Today I discovered the fire truck for the first time. Holy crap, it was like playing fire trucks when you are a little kid or something. Amazing!

I was at the boatyard heading back to the city in a giant bus and saw a few of those long trailers with the ramps on them and just couldn't resist the urge to try and jump some cars with it. Didn't really work out, but like most things in this game, it ended with me running from an awesome explosion.

Still haven't gotten the tank. Can't wait!

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 21 May 2012 07:33 (fourteen years ago)

presume you're meaning VC Stories?

Even though I prefer VC rather than Stories, it did make some improvements which I would hope GTA5 might take a hint from. Though I doubt Rockstar will get anything remotely like how good the original series was anymore.

Stuff like getting to replay Rampages, even after you've completed them. Showing the hidden packages you've already collected on the map. Swimming. Side missions had a fall back checkpoint, ie you reach level 5 or 10 and if you die you get to start from that point next time.

You hit the nail though on why I love these games so much, they basically are just like playing with cars again when you were a kid. Another reason why IV let me down, huge lack of unlockable vechicles meant less excitement and reward.

PSOD (Ste), Monday, 21 May 2012 08:21 (fourteen years ago)

Nah I mean straight-up VC.

Yeah I remember being in elementary school and drawing these massive maps of tanks and helicopters and cars and guys with guys all blowing the crap out of each other. This game is basically that, made hyper-real and hyper-violent.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 21 May 2012 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

The funniest bit is when I've stolen a cab and entered the mission, and I look for a fare, and it's the guy who's cab I've stolen.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 21 May 2012 14:29 (fourteen years ago)

I want to play more GTA after this, but I can't imagine them having the same appeal with the Miami-like setting, the beaches, the 80s malls, etc. I really like the world they've created for this. On the other hand, I'd like to see what they've done with newer tech. This game game out almost ten years ago!

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 21 May 2012 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

san andreas is better, imo.tho vice city was more remarkable for its novelty. san andreas is more of the same really.

zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Monday, 21 May 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

I can ride with either opinion. San Andreas was so large and immersive, you could spend hours exploring its world without playing a single mission. One night, I was climbing up Mount Shasta looking for Bigfoot when I heard this motor sound and suddenly, got knocked off the mountain by a biplane that had crashlanded in front of me. It was such a wild random moment that snapped me out of my zone, realizing that I had just spent three hours goofing off (I wasn't even high.)

But Vice City looks better. It has this sinister feel to it that SA doesn't have. I never got comfortable shooing gang members, but drug traffickers and tourists brought out my best in violence. That, and the soundtrack was better.

pplains, Monday, 21 May 2012 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

"Shooing gang members" -- "Hey! Get out of here, you Ballas! Shoo! Shoo! Don't make me use this!"

pplains, Monday, 21 May 2012 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

Lol

I really got into the ambulance missions yesterday, went through all 12 of them on the beach. The fugitive ones are great too, but I've only gotten up to level 4 before I get smashed to a million pieces by an army of cop cars and explode. But yeah those are just so much fun as well.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 21 May 2012 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

blue thunder missions, which are vigilante missions in the chopper, are incredible. you can basically rack up millions of dollar just by getting the crooks to spawn at the airport.
