slightly sweet, slightly tangy. perfect on an 85 degree day, and only $1 per 16oz cup from the old mexican fellow who has set up shop on my corner with a fruit press and several gigantic melons. YAY.

Why isn't this available in stores? Preservation problems? It was on the menu at Cafe de la Paz in Berkeley and my wife said it was the best thing she'd ever tasted. I'd like to partake, but I'm allergic and the whole "swelling shut from the neck up" thing is a bit of a drag.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 15 May 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

But it is so easy to make at home, in the blender. Just had some today. And I'm lazy about healthy drinks (will struggle mightily to concoct cocktails).

Cafe de la Paz!

I must visit there sometime.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

That last sentence was like something from Strongo's Nuevo Cuisine.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

aka "aqua frescas" in mexico. the most common flavors are usually honeydew (supposedly the inspiration for mt. dew), canteloupe,
watermelon, strawberry, papaya, pineapple and coconut.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

but isn't there usually other stuff, like sugar, in aqua fresca? this is just plain.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the recipe is just fruit juice and water from my experience.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:12 (sixteen years ago)

had some watermelon ginger soup last week; it needed vodka

there is no there there (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

hahaha

i was wondering, making this, the same thing Rock Hardy was five years ago: Why isn't this available in stores?

you'd think it'd be a piece of cake - split em open, cut off the rind, mash it all into a giant series of industrial strainers

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

I love watermelon juice so much. have been buying the small tj's bottles.

iatee, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:19 (sixteen years ago)

I always figured it was cause watermelons are more expensive than oranges/lemons and people wouldn't be willing to pay the price. cause I mean, this does exist in stores, it's just a little expensive.

iatee, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

Naked Juice makes watermelon juice. For $3.50/16oz bottle.

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

all their stuff costs that much! are watermelons really more expensive? there is so much of my enormo-melon that i literally don't know what to do with it. haha i don't know what i was thinking. i should have invited people over.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

^^^YES. Another use is to cut up into cubes, fit one in each cube pocket of an ice cube tray, add vodka, then freeze.

lacoste intolerant (suzy), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

They also often have different melon aqua frescas at Whole Foods. Yum.

schwantz, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 23:20 (sixteen years ago)

y'all need to stop shopping at whole foods and just go to your nearest latin barrio.

there is no there there (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 01:17 (sixteen years ago)

Or just blend some watermelon with a tiny bit of water, a touch of lime juice, and sugar to taste.

I considered making agua fresca from some cacti I picked up (tuna cactus), but the seeds were so prevalent, tough and nasty tasting I didn't know what to do with them. I'll stick to watermelon next time.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 01:19 (sixteen years ago)

when I buy a watermelon I don't cut it into slices - I cut it in half, and then scoop out the watermelon in chunks and keep it in big bowls. whenever you finish a bowl, there's a big pool of watermelon juice at the bottom. also when you're done scooping out the watermelon there's also a lot of juice left over. best thing ever!

tony dayo (dyao), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 01:31 (sixteen years ago)

We had Watermelon Bellinis today--seeded pureed watermelon and sugar, topped with Prosecco, and with a lemon rind for garnish.
