eyesight/allergies problems/questions

hello. my name is strongo and i can barely see the screen right now.

i haven't had new glasses for about four years now. (the infamous emo glasses were purchased in the summer of 2000.) i know know know i should just get new ones, but, as you may have surmised, i am rather broke. (this is not a thinly veiled request for handouts.)

in the last week or so things have gotten REALLY BAD, to the point where everything is hazy and wobbly on the screen and now i'm unsure if everything else is out of sync to or its my mind playing tricks on me. (how bad my eyes REALLY were last week, etc.) it's been giving me awful headaches (not good for a writer) and otherwise fucking with my day.

now, the other thing is that in the last week or so my allergies have kicked in really bad and so my eyes are awful and watery and itchy and i basically want to claw them out of my skull every five minutes.

does this ever happen to anyone else with their allergies? (the having a hard time seeing things thing.) is it possible for your eyesight to deteriorate seriously in the space of a week? (i'm guessing not.)

new plz kill me now answers

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you been masturbating a lot recently?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

When my sinuses (maybe allergy-related) get bad my eyesight gets a lot worse. When they clear up (from pseudoephedrine or just a better day) they go back to normal.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, matt, but it's never affected my eyesight.

that's kind of what i wanted to hear milo (just so i can feel justified putting off the eye exam again).

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know how positive a sign that is, though. If you put it off too long, maybe the problems become permanent.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

well obviously i'm going blind anyway. i just need another couple of months you stupid eyes!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been panicking lately as well. it has to be allergy-related. i've always had excellent vision, until this recent vicious bout of pollen attacks. things have been a bit blurry from time to time, and my eyeballs feel weird and strained.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 16 May 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

An excellent writer named William Vollmann is going blind, and he produces thousand page books every year or so. Allergies suck - I don't wear glasses, but have been blinded by allergies. Acupuncture cured me, even though i was getting it for something else!

aimurchie, Monday, 17 May 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

augh this fucking sucks!!!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 May 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

could this be what finally gets me to stop posting to ilx?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 May 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Is your screen refresh rate set high enough? 75Hz or above has done wonders for people (especially those who get headaches looking at a screen all day).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 17 May 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

how do i do this?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 May 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

xp: control panel / display / settings / advanced

And then from there you can click on the 'monitor' tab but it may be different depending on your monitor.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

aimurchie, how long did you go for acupuncture? How bad were your allergies? Did you have multiple allergies? (I get four different allergy injections, but some of them combine, say, a bunch of tree pollens together, etc.)

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 17 May 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks guys! but it seems the highest i can set it to is 70hz :-(

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

70hz is ok. The way you can check is that if you look at white on your screen using your peripheral vision, you shouldn't see any flickering.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm. no flickering.

i think i may just break down and make an appointment with an optometrist on friday.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I typically get one or two headaches a week. They've been persistent five out of the past six days -- to the point where I can barely browse shit and fuck around, let alone be productive. I'm convinced at this point that only a couple days away from a computer will fix this. The only problem is that I cannot do it. Thankfully my allergies have not been bad at all this year.

Stacey Pollen (Andy K), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo is jim knipfel and i claim my lunch money

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, you could also go to: control panel / display / settings / advanced

then click on the 'adapter' tab. click the "List All Modes" button and change it there. There is a small chance of damaging your monitor, but if it was made in the last 2-3 years, you should be able to bump it up.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

try it at 75hz and 85hz.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I'd say it's allergies as well. It's hit me that hard this week; eyes that can't stay open, can't stay closed, just feel like hell. Focusing is hard, light hurts, the world gets blurry, sinus headaches, it is hell.

I found an over-the-counter that works to stop much of the eye horror(still some gravely feeling, itching), and some of the sinus, but not enough to save me.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

to rocket scientist: I went to acupuncture for general malaise and a swollen ankle that had been broken. I went for approx. six months - the allergy effect was very sudden and not what I was paying for! I was getting needles in my feet, upper back, hands and face. Probably 15-20 at a time. if i could afford it, I would do acupuncture every week - I really got great results.

aimurchie, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i seriously doubt this monitor was made in the last three years

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

boo berry (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 01:09 (nineteen years ago)

i want to remove them with a melon baller

boo berry (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 01:09 (nineteen years ago)

I've had blood-snotty bad sinuses for a few days now; bf reckons it is hayfever, so I totally empathise Jess :( Ugh ugh. I used to get allergy-eyes so bad that I'd rub them til they got a layer of pus over them and I went half blind. Thank christ that don't happen anymore.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm. I'm surprised my sinuses aren't too bad at the moment. Sorry for the rest of you.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 03:06 (nineteen years ago)

(My biggest problem really seems to be mold anyway.)

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

is stating "constantly apply Systane eye drops (or similar product)" too obvious? I suffered allergies and itchy eyes for years and years and years and sometimes it itched so bad the only relief was to lie down with a wet washcloth over my eyes and fall asleep. Even recently I rubbed my eyes so hard I broke all the blood vessels and one eye was all red for a weak. But due to some issue that had to do with my overactive thyroid, I tend to have dry eyes, which is compounded by allergy dryness, as well as living in a dusty setting and probably not washing enough, so I use these eyedrops, sometimes every few hours or more.

I'd also get stys a lot because apparently I have huge eyelashes so I have huge eyelash holes or whatever they're called a sty is basically a zit in the pore that the eyelash comes out of, so my eye dr. says every time I shower, to wipe my eyelashes with my fingers, to remove dust. That combined w/ Systane keeps things good for me. And I'm TERRIBLE with eye drops, half the time I have my eyes closed and just drop them all over and open my eyes fast and drop it in the corners and hope it gets around.

sorry if that wasn't relevant, I'd assume you'd tried artificial tears already if the problem was that bad, but then again, I went YEARS without realizing a solution to my problem was that simple. There's lots of brands but my dr gives me Systane samples, so that's what I use and it's better then some more well advertising stuff I tried once that didn't do anything.

This thread reminds me I must take my Spray-Tish home, so I can like, breathe tonight when I sleep. Thanks, thread!

two years pass...

OH GOD MY EYE!!!

I have this weird recurrent autoimmune eye thing called Uveitits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uveitis) and it's flaring up in my left eye. :-( It started over the weekend and I was supposed to go to the dr on Monday but didn't because I'm lazy and mistakenly thought it was going away. They won't call in an RX because it's a steroid and has to be prescribed in person. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH. I'm in so much pain and have tears streaming down my face. Kill me now. gah. Just waiting until 8:30 when the eye clinic opens and I can beg them to see me this morning.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 12:03 (sixteen years ago)

six years pass...

so....my eye doctors for like four years have said, despite my extremely ridiculous horrible near-sightedness (astigmatism in both eyes), that my eyes look great, etc, etc.

today, I go to a diff eye doctor and do some extra tests/dilation, and am told I have little baby cataracts off to the side in my eye.

I'm not even 35 years old. they're not age based.

what the FUCK????

I can't even figure out how. they say alcohol can be a cause, well yeah ok I've drank more this year than in the last few, but not enough to cause that. Diabetes? at one point my bloodwork showed pre-diabetic, but I was sick, and when it was done last, it was under that level.

smoking? only weed, and less than twice a month.

what the hell...how do I have....ugh.
