Howard's actually moving to have same-sex unions completely unrecognised in Australian law.

By that, I mean he's actually going out of his way to have the legal documentation changed, to prevent any same-sex union of any kind being legally recognised.

If one half of a gay couple dies, the other half has no rights at all, even if they've been together for 50 years. While different-sex couples get loads of widow rights and such, same-sex couples get nothing.
