AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't trolls basically harmless? napoleon and hitler were anything but.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I always took the word to mean, like, gratuitously contrarian. So those first four are spot on.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

But actually no, wait, those first ones aren't trolls because they can justify their positions. Trolling is more like, taking a standpoint not because you believe in it, but because it will piss other people off. And that's why I don't think trolls are necessarily harmless. Like, (to give a local example) a lot of men age 18-34 (or whatever) here in Minnesota voted for Ventura several years ago, but not because they wanted him to be governor, necessarily, or that they even knew where he stood on various important issues. They voted for him solely to give a big "fuck you" to all the people who actually did care about how the election turned out and just to politics (in the classical positive civil sense rather than the petty personal one) in general. And then of course Ventura won and proceeded to be a gigantic ass and fuck various things (education, assorted social programs) up.

Which isn't really notable, since it somewhat misses Colin's point - but I remember that the main characters in this movie are named Harry Potter and Harry Potter Jr., which should count for something.

Voltaire is purported to have said something like "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." What troll is prepared to concede that?

Always Winter Never Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

True enough.

Well OK, how about The Marquis De Sade?
