Do people like these? The hot weather is bringing them out as much as flipflops.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

there may be a thread with their proper name on it somewhere (and if there is, N. will link to it). But I'm in two minds about them. Some of the time I think "they look cool". Some of the time I want to shout "WHERE'S THE FLOOD?"

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

wouldn't be seen dead in em. but don't listen to me, i'm a total fascist.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Fascists only wear summer dresses!

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

strangely popular with men here in Bangkok. Have not really noticed them on women but here some men are women so there you go.

Paul Kelly (kelly), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm clearly not one then.

Mind you there are floods here at the moment.

thankfully xpost

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

If they are tight, they are called 'capri pants', Ishtar knows why. If not, err cropped trews innit.

I hoiked my sole pair out of a draw this morning and decided against them, mainly because I haven't broken my feet into the sandals that go with them yet this season. A cautious classic, but there's a certain feeling of Victorian urchinhood that goes with wearing them.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Paul, are most of the ones on the blokes fisherman's trousers? I still have a couple from over there, they may mark you out as traveller scum, but they're hella comfortable and cooling.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

They look terrible on me, hence I do not wear them. The stores are full of them at the moment, and those jeans that've had the cuff stitched up into capri-length so you can't roll it down! Whatup with that.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the testical revealing kao San pants are not the ones I meant. I was refering to the western style ones. I only ever see Israeli's in the fisherman's trousers these days. Kao San has gone up market and even has a Starbucks and crazy paving. Bizzare

Paul Kelly (kelly), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

That's rubbish. Bloody hell, what wrong with just rolling up yr jeans if you have hot(t) ankles? This is on a par with fake long-sleeve-tshirt-under-short-sleeve-tshirt tops.

xpost for sgs

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

SGS is quite tall. I'm wondering whether they suit shorter ppl more than tall ppl.

Now I come to think of it, the blue denim ones actually look the best, followed by black. Khaki is a definite no-no.

Enforced turn-ups sound like a bad idea tho.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

They have a way of making my legs look short and chunky and my hips look miles wide, but I think my shape is just wrong for wearing them. I've seen other tall ladies carry them off well.
I actually do have one pair that look good on me--my mother made them, they have a matching top, and are pale pink silk dupioni, hence I will never wear them but to a fancy dress occasion, if at all. They make me look like a big piece of 1950's candy.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i look ok in them if they're cut right. and it's as close as i get to wearing shorts (which i usually only wear when washing my car or whatever)

but i have trouble finding ones that i like that don't wrinkle. liz, do yours have the same problem? i just don't like to iron, so if it gets crumpled easily, i'll never wear it.

i'm wishing i had short trousers today. i'm too hot in the office.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

if you're short they just make you look short & stubby. They are a no go at all I'm afraid!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

They make me look like a big piece of 1950's candy.

b.b.b.but Sarah, what could be better?

Skottie, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

they have to be just the right length on me. if they're too long they look like they're trousers that don't fit...

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm wearing a pair today, but only because the weather's so nice but I can't wear a skirt or dress cos my legs are so hairy. I didn't like them for ages, and am not sure why I changed my mind, but they weren't very expensive. They're cream and fairly tailored, so smart enough for work.

sorry.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

capri are knee-length, ones that fall just above the ankle or so are "cropped".

these are about all I wear as I'm very short and other pants are always way too long. this might also explain my hatred of socks.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I have two pairs! They are my favorite pants!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

now on men. . .

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious = traveller scum

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

my old flatmate used to wear them and looked great. but then again he was like 6'4 and hott and super camp. so that probably helped.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

They are quite gay on men if not 'utility'. In answer to upthread question, colette, yes, super-wrinkly, as mine are wide-leg cotton jobbies. I'm sure you can get artificial fibre ones that don't crease, but surely that defeats the object of cool summer trews.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I read Colette's post as he was like 64 and hott and camp!

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even wear utility-style, mine are linen!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ergo gayist/traveller scum!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

they are ok, better than shorts anyday, on men or on women.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Also referred to as "culottes". Those tend to be quite baggy at the end.

aimurchie, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

culottes are more like long, baggy shorts which can kind of look like a skirt. (think Peggy Hill)

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I call them "SPANTS".

(shorts + pants = spants)

Spinktor, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought they were 'pantaloons'

mei (mei), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i love 3/4 or capri pants, as long as they're tight and black or denim. i like colored ones (like the beautiful hot pink thin-wale corduroy pair i saw recently), but not on me as they make my rump look wider than it already is. boo.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps what bothers me most about capri or cropped pants/trousers is their potential as full-on pants. That is, when you see them in the store and groan b/c they'd be *so much better* as full-length pants or even slightly cropped pants. In a weird kind of fashion conspiracy, everyone seems to wear them with flip flops...
(apparently in my first posts to ilx, i'm only going to participate in the fashion-related. mmmm, shallow.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The term for geezers surely = MANPRIS?

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they're a good compromise, since most people look kind of stupid in shorts.

Also, surely making rumps look wider=classic?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Curiously, I like them, if I am thinking of the same thing as you.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

pics please

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't stand these pants. At 5'2", I'd look like a sad-ass dwarf in capris or cropped pants or whatthefuckever they're called. Why is it so hard to find normal pants these days? Gah.

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they look good and show off nice ankles and feet

penelope_111, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Scandalous!

Yep, perched just above the ankle bone, very sexy.

penelope_111, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops!!! wrong thread!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

at 5'2" how can you find pants that fit jeanne??

at 5'4" i always have to roll up pants. which was cool when i was 24/7 rockabilly but not anymore. . .i'm too lazy and poor to get every pair of pants tailored. so. ..

I think I look great in cropped pants/capris. Agreed on whoever said it shows off ankles. . .lovely. I usually wear flats and sandals (no hoisery/socks).

I have a pair of these in pink. I'm still not 100% sure if this was a good idea..

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel that 3/4 pants and tops are an attempt by chain stores to cheap out on fabric, so therefore one should not buy them.

m-ry-nn (m-ry-nn), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I still I think that I like these.

the bellefox, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm going to wear a dark denim pair today. i kind of wish i had the pink ones, now.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i've seen what i assume are culottes in shop windows and like them (3/4 length, very wide cut, like palazzo pants cut under the knee). i only like them in denim, though.

but what the heck do you wear with them? sandals? flats? i saw someone on the street wearing some with knee high brown leather boots, which kind of defeats the purpose of keeping cool...

(apparently in my first posts to ilx, i'm only going to participate in the fashion-related. mmmm, shallow.)

don't worry rrrobyn, we're all really shallow, you'll fit in nicely!

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish men could wear them. Women get away with so many bottom-half variations.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

but what the heck do you wear with them?

unless you're one of the few people that culottes actually look good on, you don't need to worry about this.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm wearing black, loose, cropped pants today (my school uniform basically). I'm also wearing black slides with them.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Capri's are adorable! They look hot with pumps...a personal favorite outfit..i have a bad habit of hacking pairs of pants and making my own! i have jean ones sweat pant ones...green ones pink ones...cargo ones...they're the best!

ashley j, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

pumps? hmm. kitten heels maybe

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

To wear with coulouttes: boots, heels, or converse.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

To wear with coulouttes: boots, heels, or converse.

heels sound like a terrible idea. converse could be cute. riding-style boots can look good with knickers, but i'd exercise caution with culottes. this is a tricky article of clothing, m. good luck.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 20 May 2004 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i would just steer clear of culottes altogether. bleh.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 20 May 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Today I was reminded that even though electroclash is Over, people still keep on going on. Case in point: wearing Cinched 3/4-Length Pants, with Pumps. These are made of parachute-like material, often have lots of zippers and pockets, and an elastic cincher device as a cuff, giving the pants a puffy appearance. Often seen in white with visible hot pink thong. And always seen with pumps. But then I live in Montreal where it seems that wearing anything is an excuse to wear pumps (even in the winter! high-heeled boots! on ice!)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 20 May 2004 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't bother to read the posts in this thread but I will say that i go crazy for Capri Pants for some reason, find them a major turn on. Capri pants, glasses, and overbites = love.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the ones that are a bit too long and just look like pants that don't fit. My style is perhaps wrong.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaaargh MY EYES!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I can totally see Sam looking great in capris because she rocks that dirty/sweet retro look so well. They're personally something I've always stayed away from for no real good reason other than I don't like a lot of variables in my wardrobe--I like all my pants to match all my shoes/boots (and I do usually wear docs and that doesn't really work with capris). For the same reason I own very little that is brown or blue. It's certainly not because I'm a goth OH NO.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

dirty/sweet

oooo, nice. ;)

i wear docs too, to work and dirty punk rock shows sometimes. With these I wear low-rise dickies-type work pants. normal dress pants just never really work for me. I always have to wear heels with them to look half-way decent.
