French DVDs

Fucking hell, if the EU constitution has a clause about putting English subtitle options on all DVDs, then maybe it'll get my vote. There's this incredible 'Hiroshima Mon Amour' two set, with old Resnais/Marker docs, out in France, and no freaking subtitles. Ditto Studio Canal's Renoir DVDs.

WTF. Was D-Day a big waste of time or what?

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, you can also tell that to the Germans, buddy... I'm still debating to buy 'Germany in Autumn' just to look at the pictures

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It is good, that film, but... bastards really.

ENRiQUe (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Any news on a 'Last Year in Marienbad' DVD?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't think so. amazon.fr is the place. But weird lack of Marker in general. I had noticed in France that Godard DVDs lacked sous-titres, but this is sending me over the edge. Maybe I'll have to learn French now. So-called entente-cordiale. Dubbed versions of 'Fifth Element' klaat.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Hah - Yes, it might be time for you to learn the language.. I just bought the new Godard box-set (6 films) for 30 EUR!!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

woah-hoah! what's on it???

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

learn french dude

(x-post)

fnac.com sometimes has more stuff than amazon.fr

note that there are 1,000s of dvds available in france but not online, i don't know the circumstances but visit fnac or g.j. and you'll see. that godard is a case in point: it really must be a bootleg (i don't recall any info on the box regarding a publisher) but it's nicely packaged and available in the major outlets. i found dvds of "farrebique" and some others (a few even have english subtitles) at fnac bastille...

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i should have bought the similar chabrol box too, if only for "que le bĂȘte meure"

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The classics mostly:
Le Mepris
Pierrot le Fou
A Bout de Souffle
Une Femme est une Femme
Made in USA
Les Carabiniers

I have not seen these last two. The packaging is pretty nice too. I think it's in the same series as the Polanski three-fer that came out last year.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the one: http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000C8XA5/qid=1084870938/sr=1-17/ref=sr_1_3_17/171-3846332-8408250

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

'Made in USA' is very beautiful and totally (I think) incomprehensible, so that would be okay without dialogue. Anna K on screen for 90min is really all you need.

Those late 60s Chabrols deserve mo' love. I'm going to Paris in a month, and will have to do some hunting.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i think que le bete meure is 1971 or something

go g.j. on st. michel, and to the fnac farther east.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, the box set sells for 30 EUR on fnac.com (and at the FNAC itself obv.)

Well, since I'm French, the s/t, or lack thereof, aren't really a problem..

Do pick up the new 'deluxe' DVD of 'Wanda', that just came out in France.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw "wanda" when it was playing at the rue st andre des arts. it was amazing, but i balked re. the dvd b/c i can't imagine wanting to actually watch it again, it was so bleak.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

What's in it?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

a dvd!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

it's most (all?) of resnais's 1980s stuff

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

not too cheap though

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

the box includes:
mon oncle d'amerique
la vie est un roman
l'amour a mort
melo
i want to go home

and some extras

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

w/ silents (ie 'fall of the house of ursher') i guess it isn't so important to have englang.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

um as noted it's an american dvd with english titles

if you miss the intertitles in a lot of silent films you'll be pretty lost

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Many many posts later... 'Wanda' comes in a very nice package though, but it's true that I had to turn it off after 30 minutes. It just wasn't right for a sunny Saturday afternoon.. It reminds me of early Wenders.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hah, so I have learned a little french and then what ends up being the movie I want to see with no available subtitles? El Topo. Fuck.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

if you miss the intertitles in a lot of silent films you'll be pretty lost

all hail carl mayer and his kammerspielfilmen! death to intertitles! all hail the new flesh!
