May 19 - Buy No Gas Day -- Classic or Dud?

Subject: Screw the gas prices
Body: Please repost!

tell your parents neighbors and all your friends...
Lets do this!

IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES DID NOT
PURCHASE A DROP OF GASOLINE FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE
OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES.

AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF
OVER4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL
COMPANIES.

THEREFORE MAY 19TH HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK IT TO THEM DAY"
AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF GASOLINE THAT
DAY.

THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY
PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES THAT THE ARAB
NATIONS PROMISED TWO WEEKS AGO?

REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF GASOLINE GOING UP BUT AT
THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES
ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT
IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING MATERIALS, MEDICAL
SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO!

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY,
WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.

SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE YOU
KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE MAY 19TH A DAY THAT THE CITIZENS OF
THE UNITED STATES SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"

THIS IS SO STUPID; IT WON'T DO ANYTHING. PEOPLE SHOULD BLOW UP A GAS STATION IF THEY WANNA MAKE ANYTHING HAPPEN. PS - NOT THAT THE EMAIL DOESN'T REALLY TAKE A FOR/AGAINST US FOREIGN POLICY STANCE OMG WTF PUSSIES. PROTEST RUMSFELD OR THE CIA LEAK OR ANYTHING ELSE. PUSSIES1!!

parents didn't buy you a car, huh Jon?

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG THEY WILL ALL STAMPEDE TO THE PUMPS ON MAY 20 AND GIVE THE OIL INDUSTRY MASSIVE ONE-DAY PROFITS INSTEAD WTF

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I am borrowing an *cough* SUV from my parents, so I am damn well upset about gas prices.

Rebutting an email writting in all caps with a post written in all caps, C/D?

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

loser is as loser does

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe you all can answer the question of:

Why did everyone in my family older than 55 get this email and feel that it was important enough to forward to me twice each?

I guess this has gotten around.

If we dont buy gas tomorrow...wont we buy enough today to last us through tomorrow? And if we run out of gas tomorrow, and decide to stick with the no-buying pact...wont we just need to get gas on thursday? I honestly dont see a point. Call me crazy...

Spinktor, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

it'd probably be more effective if it was about boycotting products made with or distributed in petrochemicals and plastics. That would hurt the oil industry far greater, I'd guess (said as drinking some Poland Spring out of a plastic bottle).

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

or if Americans didn't buy any food at all...

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I read part of Sean's post as "Oil Industry Massive" and accidentally gave big ups to OPEC

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy who wrote this choked on someone's stockpile, for sure. And by stockpile, of course i mean penis.

Spinktor, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

nobody's choking on any stockpile (a literal one, not a figurative one standing in for a penis) when US refineries are operating at 96% capacity.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Question:

What does 'massive' mean? Like when Ali G says "London Massive"...and such.

Spinktor, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

stencil otm, which is why it's a shame that participating in boycotts is sometimes tarred as a hippie/throwback sort of thing to do - Cesar Chavez to thread FFS

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be more psyched if someone sent out a spammy email encouraging people to invest in alternative technologies, but that wouldn't be controversial.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

J0hn, that may be true and all...but when you live in the national capital region, you CANNOT ride your bike to work, a grocery store, or even a park. If you want to walk or ride your bike, then you need to buy a bike rack for your car and drive there. Seriously. Its really sad, but Im driving/buying gas tomorrow regardless of any (waste of time) boycott.

I just want to imagine the people that are 'participating' in this...sitting at home tomorrow night after work, in front of the TV during the news Prime Time hour...waiting for the 'big news' to hit that THEY were a part of! Yay!

Spinktor, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

...in front of the TV during the news Prime Time hour...

hahahaha that would be esp. great if the electricity in their home is powered by natural gas.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd rather see one of those irate French farmer protests where they all just park their trucks and tractors in the middle of the road and leave them there... Besides, why didn't they push this "protest" forward a little bit? Does the 19th have signifigance or something?

I'm really bitter about all these cars, don't get me started.

andy, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but Spinkt there's all kinds of stuff you can do (carpool, invest in alternate technologies/buy a hybrid) no matter where you live - to concede the hopelessness of the situation (or to leave the matter in the hands of the elected representatives) is to capitulate to despair

I first read this thread as "May 19 - Buy No Gay Dad", which I wasn't aware needed a grassroots effort to be a successful endeavor.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

when is "buy no heroin" day?

I support a Buy No Gas Month... Or quarter.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

but buying products and services other than gas, you'd be buying gas anyway. Buying food in America is tantamount to buying gasoline.

Ian Johnson and I are going to explore "BIOFUEL energy" tonight I think.

Kerry Faults Matador for High Gas Prices

1 hour, 5 minutes ago

By MIKE GLOVER, Associated Press Writer

PORTLAND, Ore. - Democrats led by presidential candidate John Kerry faulted Matador Records on Tuesday for failing to tamp down gas prices as the political party out of power sought a summertime issue to ignite the election campaign.

Many indie rockers filling their collections from Concord, N.H., to Miami to Oakland, Calif., said they didn't know who is to blame for an average price of $18 per Mission of Burma double LP, the first time the national average has exceeded $142 — the Republicans controlling the White House and Congress, all politicians in Washington or the oil-producing Mideast nations.

"Record prices aren't going to govern the way I vote," said Peter Vanderbout, a heating and ventilation technician putting $47.23 worth of indie LPs on his employer's Technics turntable at an Oakland coffeeshop. "It's a small issue. There's a whole bigger picture to look at."

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope whomever stacked the chemical tanks in those boxcars get a stiff reprimand; that's really a pisspoor job, and they could spill in transit, wasting the company's money.
