Santa Cruz in a close second.

Tavira

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I was going to start this thread. And then I thought it was a stupid idea.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ithaca, NY

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It is! That's why it must be done! (hippies are just as stupid as hipsters)

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Vancouver?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

arcata california

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

We're looking for the city where people have the biggest hips, right?

I vote Topeka.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I got mad stoned in Arcata once.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You're in the process of proving me very wrong.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

so did I! no wait, it was in Ft. Bragg. I can't remember.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

all I'm gonna say is that Ithaca has 3 Grateful Dead cover bands, a handful of "reggae" acts, and more jam bands than students. The biggest concert draw during my three years there? RUSTED ROOT

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Ukiah, CA

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I got stoned in Berkeley, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but SKINNY PUPPY is from Vancouver, so...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ukiah is filled with other kinds of redneck fuckups, from my vast experience stopping at a gas station there once or twice.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

and dudes playing Widespread Panic acoustic-style whilst sitting crossed legged outside dorm rooms!

Phish bootlegs used as currency!

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I did heroin in Vancouver. No, waitasec...

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Laramie, WY

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Boulder, CO? Or is that just Trustafarians morphing into soccer moms now? It's been awhile.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

where does nickalicious live? ken-tuckay?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The hippies in Boulder are mostly tourists. That's why they're always asking you for a ride to Utah.

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

are they Mormons too?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in San Francisco when Jerry Garcia died living a block from Haight and one of the hippies said to me that "All of the hippies are going to come to Jerry's memorial service, man, in Golden Gate park, man, and there will be so many hippies, man, that California will just, like, break off, man. And we'll have our own ISLAND!"

I want to say Portland, OR.

Or Ashville, NC.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I second anything in Humboldt (sp?) County, CA. Although Vermont has more than its share, too.

quincie, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Arcata,California is pretty bad, but if anyone has spent any time in Southern Humboldt - i.e. Garberville, Redway, Leggett, etc... these people are LITERALLY tree huggers... they live in trees, have moss in their hair, hemp hackey-sacks, dreads with skull beads... I almost respect them for their purity, even if they don't smell pure.

andy, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Santa Fe?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I really liked Arcata, dammit! It was nice, the house I stayed in was beautiful (and had a great view), and the weed was tasty.

I think I ate lunch at a good diner in Garberville?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Shout out to my homies in Arcata!

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(nb: they are definitely not hippies. though one of them did live in the forest for awhile supposedly. he's just weird though)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the people I met weren't hippies, just a lawyer and housewife. Who like pot.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a couple of great thrift stores in Arcata.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say Arcata too.

All the cities I've been stoned in (I've probably only smoked pot about 15 times in my life)-- Berkeley, San Francisco, Oakland, Davis, Boston, Amsterdam, St. Louis, Dana Point, Siena, and Khajuraho.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

ST LOUIS IS FOR HIPPIES!

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah my friend has a "prescription" from a "doctor" to grow "pot"

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Arcadia, CA

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, and New York City.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Lismore, Australia wins the southern hemisphere's hippie award

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

St. Louis being a hippie town completely explains bnw.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

and T.S. Eliot, for that matter.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I got stoned with a couple of med students in St. Louis. One of them may have been a hippie; he was really into Jesus and studied art at Notre Dame.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

well Jesus was a hippie, natch.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll second Lismore as well... I think there's a little town called Nimbin there that's even worse. A hippy girl ("feral"?) there told me I shouldn't read books; that's other people's ideas. She was going to start a school for the kids with NO BOOKS... they would learn to weave and build shelters. I almost strangled her.

andy, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.nimbinaustralia.com/mardigrass2003/big-joint.jpg

From the Nimbin Million Man Marijuana March... yes, that's a giant joint they're carrying.

andy, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

they march it right to the police station!

judging from a few things I've seen on TV, there are some hardcore hippies in AU

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

A hippy girl ("feral"?) there told me I shouldn't read books; that's other people's ideas.

Hahaha! That's just wonderful.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the Australian hippies I met aren't really hippies... they don't listen to the Dead or reggae... they're more like weird Crass permaculture vegan types, anarcho-commune lovers. And junk is quite popular, which isn't really the case with US hippies.

It's hard to harvest the kale when you're on the nod!

andy, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

they're more like weird Crass permaculture vegan types, anarcho-commune lovers. And junk is quite popular, which isn't really the case with US hippies.

uh... don't you live in oakland? i think you just described half of the north oakland population between age 18-25.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

No hippies in New Zealand?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 19 June 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

fuckin' Nimbin - jezz, what an excruciating place.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 19 June 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Boulder, Eugene, Ann Arbor, Athens OH, etc

kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

boulder and ann arbor are the same city really. bunch of exclusionary aging hippies with millions of dollars who think just because they have a living wage law that the plebs who sell them crystals and bongs should still live in louisville or ypsilanti so as not to blight their landscape.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

hippies seem to have been replaced by kids with piercings and good charlotte t shirts everywhere

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

portland? just because the cops guns have flowers oin them doesnt make them hippie.

nimbin is a fucking hellhole

sunny successor (standing in the light of my own musical power) (katharine), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Hippie culture is no worse than any other music-based culture and in many, many ways far superior. Please respond to provide examples of the ways in which hippie-haters are narrow-minded, juvenile culture-nazis.

Hippy Dippy Do, Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

no one's mentioned woodstock, NY yet? wow. hippie-est place EVAH (that i've been to)

joseph (joseph), Sunday, 19 June 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

portland also has the whole "white supremacist" underbelly thing going.

jody l'anti-vierge (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 19 June 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

and jim goad

jody l'anti-vierge (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 19 June 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

some friends are in asheville and claim a decent punk scene exists there, which leads me to believe there's hippies too. it's a balance thing.

mike h. (mike h.), Sunday, 19 June 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

WTF WHY IS BURLINGTON, VERMONT NOT ON THIS LIST YET?!?!??!!!?

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 19 June 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

the entire state of vermont, for that matter

jody l'anti-vierge (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 19 June 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

Nimbin is terrible but Byron Bay is even worse - its the tourist version of Nimbin, so the hippies are all actually 50+ ex-accountants and lawyers and washed up actors who want to "get away from modern life mannn" and live in 1million+ mansions on the beach, dressed in caftans.

Feh.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

I hate the way that "hippie" has been conflated with "Deadhead". There were a lot of different kinds of hippies. Political hippies, LSD hippies with advanced degrees, artist hippies, eco-hippies, garage rock hippies, folk hippies, and oh yeah, Deadheads. It's not all the same.

I wouldn't be derisive of the Merry Pranksters, for example. If there were a town full of Tim Learys, I would *want* to visit it. I don't want to visit a town full of Deadheads, like Aracata (well I did visit, but nevermind).

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

They just call 'em all ferals here, which is kind of unfair really.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

Goddamn it, I go through the whole thread, and I get all excited because no one mentions Vermont...till the very end. Damn it.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

Like, yeah man, I was gonna say.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

"dropouts" >>>>> "hippies"

jody l'anti-vierge (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

Ponytailed hair and a smart and comfy cotton pantsuit combo, eating brown rice = ME!

I love brown rice. And granola. And Grape-Nuts. And whole wheat bread. But am decidedly non-hippieish. Anyway. Hippie HQ has GOT to be somewhere in the California desert. San Francisco's too much of an interesting mix of hippies, curmudgeons, GLBTs, Latinos, elderly folks who'd lived in the Bay Area since forever, urban professionals, and rock & rollers to be the hippie-est city in the land. The California desert, OTOH? Um, Burning Man -- need I say more?

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 20 June 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

isn't burning man mostly leftover "cyberpunk" goths in jane's addiction t-shirts?

jody l'anti-vierge (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 20 June 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

isn't burning man mostly leftover "cyberpunk" goths in jane's addiction t-shirts?

Um, any respectable former/present/future goth wouldn't dare expose themselves to that much natural environment, I would think. ;) And anyway, many of the ideas I remember being espoused by individuals who were totally into the Burning Man thing were very much those that I associate(d) with hippies and hippieism (the whole anti-consumerist message; the talk about living in artistic communes; the need to, like, CREATE, man!; etc.), so I automatically think of Burning Man = hippie. Unless Burning Man and its participants have changed drastically since the time period I'm sorta referencing here (i.e. the mid '90s)....

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 20 June 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

No one has said Austin?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

Not that it's the world's most, but surely it belongs in some top-ten list.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

douglas wolk will have to settle this burning man thing for us.

jody l'anti-vierge (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

Burning Man, to me, is the most loud, obnoxious, annoying neighbors I've ever had. The first time I met Hippie Psycho guy next door, he was coming back from Burning Man. My experience is admittedly limited.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

Isn't Burning Man technically the Nevada desert? (With an admittedly a Californian-on-vacation vibe.) I'd still like to see this at least once. I'm generally hippie-friendly.

No. Not at all. I think they have ultimate frisbee teams

not some dude poking a Line 6 pedal with his dick (sarahell), Monday, 26 August 2013 22:30 (twelve years ago)

I went there it was great. school policies are a bit different now from when I was there. they have a great pre-med program, and are pretty well respected in some of the hard sciences afaict. campus is gorgeous.

sports are pretty minor (no football etc), I think the biggest participation is in soccer and (lol) rugby. when I went there there weren't any frats/sororities either, although I think that might have changed a little.

just starting my last year at ucsc now. it has excellent programs for linguistics, marine biology, and astronomy. we have a few frats & sororities now but they're not that great, no frat houses or anything like in berkeley. and yeah i think i've been to one soccer game but there aren't really many sports here (we have a good bike p0lo team though, shh).

anyway i hope you can get some hiking, mtn biking, camping etc in, that's really where sc shines in my opinion
