Sitting on a deckchair on an English Beach C/D In fact, the British Beach experience in general, C/D

Some Councillor in Blackpool has proposed scrapping deckchairs on the beach. Should I care? Does anyone ever go for a fortnight in seaside towns anyway? And were those holidays anygood. I used to love going to Filely each year but I'm sure now that it is full of townies.

How is this not a Dave Q thread?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Groove Armada to thread, or something.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is Dave Q?

Paul Kelly (kelly), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Husband of '80s pop starlet Stacey Q. They connect, y'see.

If you grew up in Australia, it's very, very hard to get excited about English beaches.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

But you can buy knives there!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sick of going abroad. It's an environmental disaster zone. I'm not leaving these shores this year, so ra ra ra to sitting on a deckchair on a British beach.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm particularly fond of the Isle of Wight. When I win the lottery, I'm going to buy it.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanted to do that once.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Who wants a deckchair anyway?

Use a towel and lie on it. Unless its a rocky beach in which case go somewhere else.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm looking forward to when I live across the Solent from the Isle of CJ.

Living by the seaside is nice but I wouldn't fancy a holiday here.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm particularly fond of the Isle of Wight. When I win the lottery, I'm going to buy it.

Umm, I'm not saying that the island looks and feels old/careworn, but when you do win the lottery, you may well be able to buy it in a Sue Ryder shop!

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

In a few years, you'll be able to carry it around in your pocket.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Can all the people in the world still fit on it?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if the Libertines are playing.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember it being Proven by Science on telly that you could. That was a few years ago though.

"Unless its a rocky beach"

As an Australian I reserve the right to laugh very loudly at the rocky beach goers. Ha!

Nellie (nellskies), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

When I buy the Isle of Wight I shall have it redecorated to make it look less tired and dated, and I shall squirt epoxy resin around the edges to stop all the loose bits from falling into the sea (apart from Blackgang Chine, the sea is welcome to that bit).

I'll also get rid of the Fawley oil refinery over on the mainland because it spoils the view a bit, I hope robster doesn't mind me doing that.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Feel free to demolish Gosport as well.

I used to love going to Blackgang Chine! Stop hatin' on the fibreglass dinosaurs.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

awwww... blackgang chine RIP.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This animated fibreglass dinosaur from Blackgang Chine is okay:

They never had that when I was a nipper :(

Is the whale still there?

robster (robster), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The one you run through and it squirts water at you? Yes, that's still there.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

What about the donkeys? Aren't donkey rides available at many British beaches?

Nemo (JND), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

in a C/D styling, which sort of beach holiday is better? I went to uni in Bournemouth, which has been going for the cool image vibe in recent years, and whilst it was great for commercial clubbing, secretly I hankered after the full-on tat of Blackpool; might be just a nostalgia thing though. Anyone (live / ever lived ) in Blackpool, what (do / did) you think?

Flameproof (Flameproof), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

you went to Bournemouth? so did a couple of other posters on here, whenabouts?

chris (chris), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Bournemouth is quite pretty, I'd like to hit that beach again sometime.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not bad at all, I didn't like Bournemouth town centre at all though.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to Blackpool this weekend. Should I bring a bathing suit?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

sea temperature will probably be around 10 degrees.
