is it a negative thing? its labelled as a neagtive thing though, to some extent? implication of 'settling', or a plateau. also, suggestions of tiredness, this will do.

when used in terms of food isn't it in a fairly positive light though?

you ever try eating lenor (drinking surely, and even then only for those with suicidal ideations)?

Define your terms - cultural, financial, environmental, theological?

Environmentally speaking - I like comfort. I like warm fires and nice chairs and good beer being surrounded by friends.

Culturally speaking, comfortable always seems like a criticism. Comfortable is the Beautiful South, Paul Weller, Dido, Last of the Summer Wine on Sunday evenings and new records that sound like 1993 acid techno.

It's only negative is that it can spawn laziness or complacency, but comforting is a good thing to do generally. And being comfortable seems appropriate as a target (if you're not already).

S: content
D: complacent

i am interested in why the concept of comfort is looked at disparagingly. perhaps, it is because people view it as something of a 'compromise'. but why is it perceived as an end, and not as a platform?

are you comfortable?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Because it is frequently used in that manner, I think.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

does anybody really think of comfort in this supposed negative light? funny how discomfort may be deemed more interesting, perhaps because it is so pivotal the way it forces change

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

People who have no immediate hope of comfort may. feel that way. As may people whose standards of comfort are too high/unreasonable. Obviously the same person may fit into both categories depending from different points of view. Human mind modifies itself to survive shocker.

There's also the claim that evreything around us was created/invented/designed by uncomfortable people - related to "why on earth would someone back conservatism?"
