Someone throws a... balloon full of purple powder at Tony Blair

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope it's fucking anthrax.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

That's kind of surreal. Unless its a chemical assasination attempt.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

It was Fathers 4 Justice.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

What might they be? bOYZ 2 mEN?

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I reckon Prince is behind it.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"And we'll do it again!"

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It does have quite a pleasing visual element.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

A campaign group for divorcee dads to get to see their kids. Details here.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus. Can some actual serious terrorists plz step UP and do better?

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Tony Blair's Parliament 'security screen' is ineffective, goes the spin. Obviously the whips have already got to the MPs, because this is what some Labour MP was just saying on the news.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the way on the poster for their 'The Rising' demo it says:

Bring: Drums, air horns, whistles, purple flags and... pictures of children.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Fathers 4 Justice's 'colour' is purple, hence the purple flour thrown.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I know - it was the 'pictures of children' that made me laugh.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, "Dont bring actual children, we're trying to prove we don't get access fercrisesakes!!!"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

For anyone who hasn't seen this, or who still cares, here's a video of the 'attack'. You'll need the divx codec.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I found this sentence from the report rather perplexing.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and Chancellor Gordon Brown, who were sitting either side of Mr Blair, both looked up at the public gallery as the dust descended

Skottie, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

smiled, and discretely offered a 'thumbs up' salute...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I am glad to hear that purple is the colour of equality.

Though I always thought it was the colour of

1. (Roman?) Empire

2. The Pinefox

the bellefox, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just confused by the woman behind him wearing a matching shade of violet.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"They were fighting for equal rights for dads. Purple is the international colour of equality," he said.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince had more of an influence than we'll ever know.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Purple in Roman times was Imperial and could only be worn by nobles. D'oh.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it looked more lavender than purple to me. And you know what that means.

QUOTATIONS FROM CHAIRMAN "SWISH" (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, get HER. ::flounces off::

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Marillion are getting more risque with the singles promotion?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

...and yesterday, Gerhard Schröder got slapped. This trend should continue.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

QUOTATIONS FROM CHAIRMAN PAC-MAN (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, did they just have that hanging around, or was someone really bored this morning?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I sat YAY Fathers4Justice - I have printed out a membership form from their site and am taking it home to the boyf - it's about time somebody did something about the state of things. Any other website or organisation I've looked into has been run by women hating bitter men and it shows - this lot seem to have their act together!

smee (smee), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeebus christ.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, Enrique, yes it would be really fucking wonderful if lots of people died a hideous death. Twat.

Everything I've seen about Fathers 4 Justice has led me to believe they are bunch of misogynistic arseholes.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You are right, Ricardo.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

They were actually aiming at Margaret Beckett.

Everything I've seen about Fathers 4 Justice has led me to believe they are bunch of misogynistic arseholes

I dunno enough to judge, but "Fathers 4 Justice" is about the gayest name possible for a group with their ultimate goal.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Fathers 4 Prince

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The channel 5 newsreader is wearing a tie in matching shade of purple. Footage has been shown, and a purple haze seems to hang in the air. There is even a 3-D computer mock-up of the event with a little electronic Tony, further to Liz's 'wtf?' upthread.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I always had the pro-fathers' rights lot down as tedious, dissembling misogynists, but I heard a spokesman for one of the groups (maybe Fathers 4 Justice, I don't recall) on a radio phone-in recently and he was quite likeable and distanced himself from all that stuff.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry for calling you a twat, Enrique. Was not called for.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, did they just have that hanging around, or was someone really bored this morning?

Not as impressive as the 3D computer-graphics reconstruction of the event that Channel 4 News showed last night :-)

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

s'okay Ricardo! [i think antrax is a pretty ineffective thang, and i wouldn't want any non-politicians to 'get it'. TB i really couldn't give a fuck: he's enough blood on his hands] i was *this close* from sending a suspect jiffy-bag over...

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

they should have throw a giant farting tinky winky

UH OH! TINKY WINKY FARTING PRIME MINISTER!!!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Any other website or organisation I've looked into has been run by women hating bitter men and it shows - this lot seem to have their act together!

Indeed, their act is so together they were able to convince you they were not women hating bitter men, when, of course, they are. Still anything that causes actual pain and discomfort to Tony Blair can only be applauded.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The caption on the front page of the Times today reads "Democracy has been stained permanently by this lurid stunt", which must win some sort of an award most moist-palmed huffy press hyperbole.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny...

One of the problem pages a week or so ago had one from a woman whos new partner had gone all 'cold/non intimate' due to all the time he was spending trying to gain more/better access to his kids from his first marriage and running a 'fathers wanting access' type organisation.

Now, what are the implications of this kind of letter?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Award FOR moist-palmed huffy press hyperbole, I mean. I must try proofreading before hitting send one of these days.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

omg, wtfuck is the times on? surely going to war without popular mandate is... oh why do i bother?

the association itself sounds vile, and paralegal, but still...

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Democracy has been stained permanently by this lurid stunt"

Ha ha, I love the crap journalists write when they write the crap they right. I doubt even Tone's suit was stained.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(Incidentally, I reckon Father's Rights is a valid cause to support, and whether or not it has been hijacked by rabid misogynists has little bearing on this fwiw)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Also superb line in today's Grauniad leader:

"If we allow the mutual respect that is inherent in the system to slip away we risk condemning ourselves to the howling wilderness of which we caught a fleeting but frightening glimpse in the Commons yesterday. "

Letter to the Independent on Sunday

The media is building up a distorted picture of how family courts treat fathers. Neither the law nor judges' interpretation of it are unfairly biased against fathers - recent research by the University of Leeds and others found no evidence of a maternal preference. Mothers are more often awarded care of children because more often they have been the primary carers and judges are concerned to preserve stability for children after a family break- up.

But, of course, fathers should be closely involved in their children's lives.

Many of the single parents calling our helpline want advice about contact. They want involved fathers and often for them the problem is how to protect their children from a father who is unreliable about sticking to contact arrangements. Thirty one per cent of resident parents say they would like the non-resident parent to have more contact, as opposed to only 17% of non-resident parents who wanted more contact.

Most contact/care cases are sorted out by the parents - the Office for National Statistics found that only one in ten parents had used the court to settle contact. Among the minority of cases in which parents cannot agree, fathers are rarely denied contact with their children. In 2002, less than 1% of contact orders applied for were refused by courts.

Spiderman stunts don't help children. But reliable research and a level-headed debate on how we can foster good contact arrangements would.

Andy Keen Downs
Deputy Director

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

shame it's not Parent's Rights but that's a whole other kettle of alimony

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

If we allow the mutual respect that is inherent in the system...

Can someone spell this out to me? I see very little respect around (ie being lied to, patronized, and fobbed off by the government) and certainly none which is 'inherent' (as is the system came down to us designed by well-meaning... Guardian leader-writers...).

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked the 'follow on' bit...

Blair "Oh its just a bit of dry cleaning"
everyone else around "HAAA AHAAAAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAHAAHAA AH HA"

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I should expect they mean the process of parliamentary democracy which despite wrangles over to what extent you consider yourself to be lie/patron/fobbed off by, is still something I consider to be an good and important thing, innit, like.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

naaaaah!

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god the only thing more irritating than that special parliamentary laugh is people who call Blair "bliar".

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Bliar! HA HA - that's brilliant!!! It's almost as good as 'Petridish'.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

ow, come on, 'petridish' is cla$$ic. neway, how did we get to this: who said 'bliar'? anyway, this thread has irrevocably planted prince's 'u got the look' in my head.

enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 20 May 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Tiny Blair = imagine him as only 3 inches tall. not so big now is he!

Tomy Blair = thinks the war in Iraq is actually just a portable electronic handheld game that's why he went along with it

What is annoying is the fact that when the house got suspended a lot of them went outside, instead of being 'contained' as they should in the event of a suspected anthrax or evil powder attack. Does purple mean safe?

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Thursday, 20 May 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i just use grauniad because i can never remember how to spell guardian properly...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 20 May 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Och, how can you hate purple, N.? maybe i've just been brainwashed through my Prince obsession (i also think peach and black is an ace colour combination) but Purple's meggagegga.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 May 2004 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

My mother shamed me as a youngster by painting our front door lilac. The council were displeased though and quickly reverted it to the uniform brown.

Then mum retaliated and painted it lilac again. The council just left her to her own devices.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What Matt DC said about father's rights. There are plenty of non-misogynistic campaigners and individual members of organisations can't always be taken as spokespeople either.
