What is your work environment like?

I was talking to someone yesterday who said that they weren't permitted to have a cup of coffee (for instance) at work outside designated 'break' times, there were no drink making facilities in the office, no water cooler, no eating allowed at their desk, and that it was even frowned upon if someone went to the toilet during work hours! I was quite appalled.

What's it like where you work? Is it relaxed, do you have good facilities, or do you have evil overlords breathing down your necks and cracking the corporate whip at you?

Completely relaxed with everything to be honest. facilities are ok in that we have a kitchen with a free drinks vending machine & a kettle, microwave & toaster. Drinks are free but we have to pay for treats.

well, it's remarkably hot, but seeing as I'm just nipping upstairs for free Ice cream - not so bad

chris (chris), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty relaxed here! Only complaint is the coffee is not so good. Does the person you talked to work for Jim Beam?

my aircon seems to be dripping today right into an uplighter lamp which is now full of water, oops! And of course lots of ilx allowed not stopped.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

very relaxed here--but that doesn't alleviate the boredom

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

ilx is not stopped but there is websense blocking certain website caregories including Gambling, Alcohol & Tobacco and web-based email. A&T is especially annoying as it blocks fancyapint and Beerintheevening, which are frequently linked to on FAP threads.

the toilet in the teachers' lounge has toilet paper (usually) but we have to supply our own soap. I do bring tp from home for the kids to use though as their restrooms never have any.

My classroom is my little kingdom so I eat/drink whatever the hell I want in here. The ac never works on hot days and freezes us on temperate days.

There are roaches and a mouse lives in my closet.

we have a microwave but the clock/timer bit doesn't work so it's kind of hard to make frozen dinners in it.

There's no coffee pot on my floor and the styrofoam cups from the cafeteria cost a quarter. there was a coke machine that carried diet coke in the lounge (the kids' machines don't) but it's been broken for a couple of months now.

We get a 25 minute lunch and a 50 minute planning period each day. This is when we can go to the bathroom. I have to go quite badly right now but I still have another 25 minutes before class ends.

Sleepy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

We have a coffee pot but no one else at my work drinks coffee! They are insane! Sometimes I make coffee just for myself.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Fairly relaxed here, despite working for corporate overlords. We can eat and drink at our desks but we can't have a kettle in the office due to Health & Safety litigation ph34rs. Nasty tea & coffee is available from vending machines or there's nicer but pricier tea & coffee from the canteen.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

My last job was a nightmare. A crumby kitchen with a rotten old drinks machine that every so often decided to fire out cups of hot effluent at unsuspeting PAYING customers. It was also frowned upon to go to the toilet during work hours and if you put your phone on hold for more than 20 seconds you had the bosses breathing down your neck. Shitty shitty pay, long hours plus working every third saturday for no extra nearly led me to serious depression.

Now I work in a much smaller office with fairly nice people (albeit a bit older than me). We all take it in turns to make the tea and my screen is faced away from the bosses so I just have to be discreet. It is a little quiet though apart from we can hear the radio blasting out from the factory next door and that can get irritating.

the one good thing about working for the Bank was the free Starbucks and Peet's.

It's a crumbly, tumbly inner city school - 'nuff said.

x Jeremy (Atila the Honeybun), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It's okay, nothing strict going on, can go to lunch whenever, no one really checking up on me. No air conditioning though, gets way hot in summer being south facing and all.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Coffee, juice, water, and sodas pour freely like some thirst-quenching River Jordan of non-adult beverages. I have to feed our clients frequently so I help myself to left-overs like sandwiches, salad, chips, and cookies. Our microwave works well and we have a fridge for our own purposes. I am allowed to go to the toilet during work hours, but not at my desk, so it's kind of a mixed bag.

ya'll got toilet paper and soap jeremy?

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Relaxed but unbearably hot in the summer, really really bad. It's by and large a happy place. My bosses are great.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the only complaint I have is that we don't have a water cooler. They assure us that the spigot at the sink runs through a filter, and it does appear to, however, I've seen no evidence, in the four years I've worked around this floor, that anyone has ever changed it. Requests to get a water cooler have gone nowhere.

My first dot.com job we had a massive kitchen full of ridiculous junk food all for free. Then one day that went away when they realized they weren't making any money. A dark, dark day.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i miss working for dot.coms pre-net bust. tons of free snacks, every soda imaginable, starbucks coffee. and things like monthly happy hours where they'd rent out a sake bar or something.

*wistful sigh*

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Very good - a fair amount of space, temperature always about right whatever it's like outside, a kitchen (people buy their own tea and coffee) with microwave, sink and fridge. No one cares when you go to toilet or lunch, and you can be pretty flexible about your hours.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I AM MAKING COFFEE NOW BECUZ I JUST NEARLY FELL ASLEEP

Despite the crazy things I posted about my boss yesterday, it is really very relaxed here. We have a lot of light and aircon, and I have a huge desk area with a very comfortable leather chair. It gets crazy when the boss is in, but he's in court most days at the moment. The building is a remodelled old Victorian and there are only 4 people here today. We have an unlimited supply of pretzels, soft drinks, and cheese and a nice deck for me to eat my lunch and read novels on. Plus-parking!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

soft pretzels?

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

No, those long stick-like ones.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I was shocked by their carb-count, frankly.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

cause if it were the soft ones, well that would rule.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

People break their computers, i fix them. That is unless its a Sun, in which case I tell them to talk to Todd.

My cubicle is littered with computer carcass.
