Yes yes yes you've got an iPod, yes yes yes so have I, yes yes yes they're very cool but a; those headphones are rubbish and b; they make you look like a conspicuous wanker.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 May 2004 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, they are like wearing a sign saying 'mug me please'.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I want those who get to know me (qua qua)
to be my admirers or anenome (heyey)..

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have an iPod so the bastards are my technologically advanced FOE!

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, i've had white earphones before iPods. white earphones are SO three years ago.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

aw man, i had an iPod mini in my hands yesterday. SO SO SO SOOOO CUTE

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

the problem with not using the white headphones is other ipod users don't know you have an ipod, so one has to make sure one doesn't smile at them knowingly "haha, i am in the same early adopter (yeah, OK, whatever) club as you, aren't we cool", as they will just think i'm odd, as i have my cheapo black headphones on...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I was so struck by the numbers of white earphones that I took to taking sideways closer looks as I passed people. Quite a lot are not iPod ones. I don't know if people get them to look like they have an iPod when they don't - that would be great. I feel like people are thinking of this of me when I use mine with my pocket radio instead of my iPod.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Foe. If they have enough money for an iPod (bastards), they have enough money for a good pair of headphones. Not having them is tantamount to not being in it for the music in my book, in which case that iPod should go to me.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Jerry to thread with his snotty salesperson story.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to accept the headphone rockist of the year award on behalf of myself...

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Please, Jerry.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I desperately want to go the extra mile for some decent headphones, but every month I run out of money.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Buy them at the beginning of the month.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

PJ OTM.

Dan I. you are a mere headphone rockist novice next to myself.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You have convinced me. I will cancel my child maintenance standing order forthwith until I get this headphone thing sorted out.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Aha. I was buying some cds the other day from one of those "everything is £5" shops on Oxford St (the cds were: 'Tiger Bay', 'Exiles on Main St' and 'Stranded' - I am 15 quid man), and when I went up to pay I took off my headphones and the girl on the till said:
"15, 20 or 40?".
"What?"
"Your iPod - 15, 20 or 40 gigs?".
"Oh, it's 15"
Pitying look. "Oh you so you don't have very much music, do you?"

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

daaaaaamn.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

That's like something I read in newspapers - I didn't realise it happened in real life.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i bet there's a lot of Baxendale in that iPod so i assume she was correct.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Oh you so you don't have very much music, do you?"

This is an interpretation of her look, yes?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No, she actually said that.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic story. It reminds me of when someone spotted the gramophone trumpet through our parlour window and I had to explain that we kept inside-out water buffalo.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! In like an ironic 'this is what people are supposed to saying, I read it in the papers' way, or for real? I find the latter kind of bewildering, even without considering her position as someone there to serve rather than insult the customer.

She must serve dozens of people each day wearing iPods. Do you think she says this to them all?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a weird assumption that people have their entire collection on their iPod, too.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(though I think maybe you in fact do, JtN - is that right?)

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, you should have outfoxed by saying 5, 10 or 30, showing that her assumptions that you were a late adopter were faulty.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

do the mini ipods have white headphones too?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

They have pastel cochlea implants.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

N otm. "Actually, this is 1st generation, baby." (perhaps).

"Scrollwheel or touchwheel?" would have been a more hipster (and irritating) question to have been asked.

clive (Clive), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

poseur, it's not as if the sound quality is that great

Ed (dali), Thursday, 20 May 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

They come with the iPod, Ed.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

They fall out of my ears, and beside my trust 5 year old sennhisers are far better. Anyone want to buy an un-opened pair of iPod headphones?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 20 May 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

If they're still in the wee silver bag then they will fall out of your ears, dur.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 May 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

A great trick for making iPod earphones sound much better (in my ears, anyway) is to put them in, then twist them so the wires stick out facing forwards (rather than straight down). Bass is instantly much weightier.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

At my school, there's probably a .60 corellation between having white earphones and being a Jew. Ha ha ha I'm a jerk!

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

A secret society of white-earphone wearing iPod users tacitly acknowledging their aching hipness when they pass in the street is so 2003. Everyone has them these days. = Apple sellouts etc

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hipness never could be bought.

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

it's all about creative ZEN xtra nowadays

Fucken U_G_L_Y.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

that thing isn't actually that bad looking.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Does it use USB? If so, instant DUD. Why don't they just make a music player that uses ethernet to sync?

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

So in other words, they admitted that the iPod design ruled all and copied them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes yes yes you've got an iPod, yes yes yes so have I, yes yes yes they're very cool but a; those headphones are rubbish and b; they make you look like a conspicuous wanker.

Dexter Holland: "waaaaaankeeer heeeeeeyyyy!!!"

Redman: "Conspicous wanker."

Dexter: "waaaaaaanker yeeeeeeeaaah!"

Redman: "conspicous yeah."

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone still got an original 32meg Diamond Rio?

Looks just like an iPod, but its black, and square and only holds about 3 songs.

TomB (TomB), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

TomB: I have one of the 64 meg ones still. I'm going to be reemploying it to hold longer samples (like drum tracks) that I don't wanna waste sampler slots for.

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i have these:

http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/images/er6-top.jpg

they hurt my ears but they sound phenomenal. i suffer for fidelity.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the white earbuds are crap.

can someone recommend a decent pair of earbuds? because I bought these sony fontopia mdr-ex51lp things on everyone's reommendation and while they fit well, they fucking sound like shit. they distort on a lot of bass frequencies, so I have to turn the bass boost off, and then it sounds all tinny. I had older sonys (like, six year old sonys) that were amazing but up and quit working last month.

(xpost) those look interesting.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Koss ones I bought for $20 are just barely decent. But Koss has lifetime guarantees on their stuff so whenever it breaks I can just send it in and get a new pair.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I defy you to give me a lung transplant.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i was hoping this thread would devolve into knee-jerk hatred of poncey rich iPod users, not end up full of them

(you are poncey and rich if you have more money than me / can afford an iPod)

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you classify 'afford'? Hello debt!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

N. - you probably want some Sennheiser PX200s; I use the PX100s but they're open backed, which you don't like. Google and check the archives here; I talk about them often enough.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

are those the foldable ones? if so, i used to have a pair and can vouch for them...

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, they are indeed the foldable ones. I LOVE THEM.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I just had a look at Word in Borders. They were raving about some foldable £79 Sennheisers - are they the ones. Bit too much for me, I think. Is there nothing for about half that price?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

YES! The £79 Sennheisers are the model ABOVE the ones I've recommended - they're designed for use on planes and stuff, and need a power source, i think. PX200s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, cool.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Customers who bought this item also bought:

Apple 20gig iPod

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I am sold. Thanks. (bah to the 1.2m cord though)

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

They're all they're cracked up to be?

I didn't buy the noise reducer ones because when the salesguy flipped the noise-reduction switch it felt like there was real pressure on my eardrums: no thanks! So I got your standard Bose C-note-and-a-half pair (the noise reducers were crazy expensive) and I didn't even have to turn 'em up too loud to effectively eliminate all the other annnoying-ass noises that usually make plane flights a hypochondriac's nightmare. The one downside is like lots of over-ear 'phones they do make me sweat a little. Whatever!

(And for the third flight this year I was reminded that downloading people's dance mixes to your iPod is one of the sweetest things about the intraweb - a good mix (like Siegbran's electro mix! or one he pointed me at anyhow) makes the time in flight pass so quickly and painlessly)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

And the battery run down before you get there...

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

unless you have a spare battery and a screw driver to pry the case open with and then change the battery

ken c (ken c), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

don't ipods have equalizers?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

these have really good sound and they actually don't look stupid on. my current pair are awful, I just bought them in a panic and they look ridiculous. But I had these beforehand and I miss them sorely.

http://www.spysupply007.com/Headphones/philips/Lightweight/HS380_Large.jpg

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, ugh, as uncomfortable as any of the in-ear-canal headphones can be, I absolutely LOATHE any of the headphone sets where part of the headphone framework wraps around your ear or behind your head, because my head just isn't designed like that, and they hurt like hell.

Séåñ Çârrüthèrš (SeanC), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

iPods have equalisers, yes. I hardly ever use it though.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

So do these white IPod earbuds make the ears burn like the other in-ears do? I like in-ear headphones, minus the whole making-the-ears-turn-bright-red-and-catch-flame-&c thing. Can anybody recommend some comfy ones? I think my ear canal is just too small for ear-buds.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

People on that amazon link say the Sennheisers are comfy.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

So, what's the deal with the iPod's battery? Is it as bad at running-down as everyone says it is? How long do you get out of it?

todd burns (toddburns), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

About 6 hours.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Whether you use it or not.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say seven hours. Todd, direct iPod questions at me in MSN editorial meetings!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

About 6 hours.

Equivalent to the lung capacity of an Action Man.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

They lose their charge when left alone quite badly yes, but extremely fast if you leave them connected to your computer when it's in sleep mode. I forgot to take mine out of its cradle when I went to bed last night and this morning? Completely flat.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, so I bought the PX-200s. Quite happy with them, though they're not amazing. I got the PX-100s first, but it was a disaster - just street noise was enough to spoil the sound. I'm quite glad the iPod doesn't go very loud, or else I'd have got used to cranking it up to block it out and I'd end up damaging my hearing.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(they really do look like cheap as fuck, though)

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never managed to perfect walking and listening to music on headphones. It just seems too dangerous.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

N - www.ipodlounge.com - downloud euPOD, it'll make everything louder! Plus I TOLD YOU NOT TO GET THE PX100s.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but they were cheaper and you seemed happy with them. Exeter must be very quiet. I was also a bit worried about not hearing danger approach with the PX200s, but they don't really block out sound much more than the iPod ones, and I'm not dead yet.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(also I figured that though I walk most places in Glasgow, I didn't want to annoy people with open-backed ones when I get trains and planes)

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i need new headphones. i hate the white in-ears so much that i've stopped taking the ipod out much, which is a total waste.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(EUPod is for Windows only, and to be honest, the top volume is OK with the PX200s)

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I am happy with them, aye, but I hate having external noise shut out - I do a lot of walking country lanes and the like, tractors can creep on you fast! Allegedly the sound quality on the PX100s is better, but when I used some PX200s they seemed fine (apart from making me feel dizzy cos of the noise-blocking).

(I didn't realise euPOD was Windows only - as well as it making stuff louder through headphones I've found it dead useful when using the iPod as a hi-fi source.)

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Saturday, 22 May 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I would still totally hear a tractor.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 22 May 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

So, what's the deal with the iPod's battery? Is it as bad at running-down as everyone says it is? How long do you get out of it?

I have the second gen 20G ipod (old design with the buttons around the wheel, but it's got the touch wheel rather than the one that moves), and it seriously will run for 7-8 hours straight before the battery is in the red. (I know because many days at work I leave it on all day.)

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 22 May 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Not these new fangled silent floating tractors.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Saturday, 22 May 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

(And for the third flight this year I was reminded that downloading people's dance mixes to your iPod is one of the sweetest things about the intraweb - a good mix (like Siegbran's electro mix! or one he pointed me at anyhow) makes the time in flight pass so quickly and painlessly)

I'll go with that! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Today I saw someone with white NOKIA in-ear headphones. He was wearing all-white as well.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Saturday, 22 May 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Either these Seinheissers benefit from a few hours breaking in or they just sound fucking brilliant when one is drunk.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 23 May 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Everything benefits from a few hours breaking in. Also drunk makes life magical!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 23 May 2004 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dixons Closing Down Sale now features headphones at 50% off. They had some Seinheissers, but not the ones that fold up and look like your granny's glasses. Also 50% off all leads and 50% off all printer ink.

I'm going to hang on until everything's 75% off.

Which Dixons is closing down? Or all of them?!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The small Dixons in small towns like Maidenhead and Windsor are closing down. I think there are quite a lot of them.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 27 May 2004 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
A faculty member was the victim of an off-campus robbery at 4:45 a.m., on July 20, 2004, on Highland Avenue at South Avenue. The victim was jogging to work at Strong Memorial Hospital when a vehicle with three occupants pulled up next to him. The vehicle was described as a late model Nissan or Toyota 2 door coupe with bright metallic blue paint, shinny rims and a loud muffler.
The first suspect jumped out of the vehicle and demanded the victim's personal music player, which was surrendered. The vehicle pulled forward a short distance and the second suspect got out. He approached the victim and demanded his fanny pack, which was surrendered. Then, the second suspect struck the victim in the back of the head with a closed fist, for no apparent reason. The suspects returned to the car which fled in an unknown direction.
