Manners and Respect Online vs in Person

do you consciously apply different standards in terms of manners and respect towards the people you communicate with electronically compared with those you apply when addressing ppl in person?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, i avoid engaging with people in person as much as possible

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I call everyone a cockfarmer regardless.

You cockfarmer.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't believe you should say anything to anyone over the internet that you would not be prepared to say to their face if necessary.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

cockfarmer

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

why, matt?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Because otherwise it just seems really cowardly - hiding behind a screen to flame people safe in the knowledge you aren't going to receive a punch in the face = dud.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

asshat. BRING IT ON!!!!!

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

yes MDC, I like to think that I apply that principle, but I have failed to do so on numerous occasions in the past. Maybe the fact that you don't see the rage on someone's face, don't see the fists clenching and (in extreme cases) don't feel the punch in the face mean that ppl are more inclined to be offensive online and it is easy forget that the ability to offend is still there. The fact that the 2 computers are separated by perhaps thousands of miles can act as a desensitising shield.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i got yo back, yo.

xpost

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

my words carry more weight than any clenched fist

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't there already been six threads on this topic with many of these same posts? Or am I living in a crazy de ja vu world?

Skottie, Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I would never use the word "asshat" to anyone's face, it sounds ridiculous in a British accent and they would laugh at me. I say "arseheart".

Mark - I don't recall you ever saying anything on board that I can't imagine you saying in person. I've never really notice you flame anyone etc...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone i've met irl from ilx is much nicer and almost always more polite, friendly and even timid than their online equiv. fwiw

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

if dog latin said cockfarmer in the pub at a FAP, he would most likely be smiling. We don't know if he's smiling at the mo. Even if he decides to do a smiley.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously though, the fact that I don't think I've ever met any of you means that you may as well not exist and could just be a highly intelligent AI system for all I care. So I'd rather call all of you asshats than my co-workers or IRL friends.

No offenc. Maybe one day I shall attend a FAP and then I will care a bit more. Then again it's not as if I'm that rude online or anything is it?

KNOB MARKETERS!

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i think DC is the only person i've HEARD say 'cockfarmer' i think

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

matt DC absolutely OTM

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm nice in real life. in that i don't express my exasperation so obviously. i'm not so bad here. am i? i try to behave.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I am much, muchn more rude in real life than I am on-line, and I think that's a good thing.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

online is a different medium to talking face to face, so obv there will be differences.

e.g. you won't say "obv" in real life like that, obv.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I've said cockfarmer. I've also used the terms fuXor and grebt in normal, non-interweb mentalist conversations.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

yes i enjoy your 'in the flesh' rudeness very much tim hopkins

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

and a lot of the things you can on the net is a lot more lexical(?) in nature that won't make sense in speech. and vice versa.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

ken is much ruder online i notice, maybe i am deluded

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm more rude online but am perfectly capable of being rude in public.

I'm getting a bit too old to throwdown but I can still kick ass when neccessary

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

see, now i'm gonna get all snotty about being ignored, which i wouldn't do irl.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't think of the rude stuff quickly enough IRL. and also everyone else has a louder voice than i do.

HERE I CAN SAY THINGS IN BOLD!!!! LOOK!! JON WILLIAMS R GAY

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I am just as rude irl, as Hopkins can vouch; on the occasion I met him, he and Dr were talking about why no one was talking about Kraftwerk's last album and I drunkenly shouted that it was because they were "fucking shit and no one cares". Then Matt DC sent beer flailing everywhere. Well, over Pete, at least.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

DR C, innit.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

snotty, i tell ya.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

He tried it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

yesterday i said 'laughing out loud oh my god' to the television. help!

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

As I am on this board, as I am in real life.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

You are a collection of characters and punctuation marks and you are blue and glowing?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i am much more couth in the flesh. at least, i was. but american had an effect.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i got sass now

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

An American? Or the collective state of mind that is 'American'?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, what's glowing?

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

yo momma

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i say omg wtf a lot now irl.

as in "oh my god what the fuck"?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

beeyatch

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not nearly as manic in real life unless I've been drinking.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

problem with saying "Oh my god what the fuck" out loud is that people think you're a random googler.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

although it is true that the first time i met colette the only comment she made was "omg wtf you are so much nicer in real life"

but possibly without the wtf bit

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

omg Dan Perry was in Dubstar

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I say "obv" in real life! Lor luv a duck!

I think I am more of a twar in real life too.

I now want to jump oot t'windae.

I also speak in bad accents, as well as TYPING in them.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm probably a bit more interesting in real life to be honest.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

and more like Tim Bisley

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i want to marry Sarah. but only online.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, I think we called our composite the Anoka County Darksider.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

CLASSIC

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds right Suzy, aw to think i came this close to Dubstar lady

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

aw to think i came this close to Dubstar lady

ob"I hope you wiped up afterwards, ha ha ha ha"joke

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

She has a new band called Client.

Who are great. They're on Mute I think.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ACD was based on these dorks who always tried to ask Nellie out because she was fairly preppy and made the mistake of browsing the Psychic TV/Throbbing Gristle section at Northern Lights while they were checking her out.

See also: Turquoise Preppy - guy who wore Matinique and had uhhh lots of closet space.

(Anna, message received and call returned, I'm home now)

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Just A Girl She Said. Fantastic song! Brilliant lyrics. And the cover of St Swithins Day is spiffing.

I think Pinkpanther is the best poster on these boards. Fresh air she is. I probably come across as an irritant. I post differently on ILB, where the atmosphere isn't so polluted.

In real life, I'm approachable.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

People, go out and buy the Client as Sarah is a good girl who deserves your money.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm... Can't read the name 'Client' without thinking 'Clinic' unfortunately. What flavour music are Client?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Icy mechanical goddesses in uniform. Your thing?

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

More poppy covers of Barking lullabies? I'm not buying it t'other.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer to be more cagey and polite online, as you can't be sure how people will interpret what you say as being hostile or mean-spirited or what have you. That's the problem with textual conversation. Offline I may be more inclined to be more flippant.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. Give me your money. Thanks Suzy! Good to know someone is on my side, although don't buy the record, just give it straight to me, thanks.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Icy mechanical goddesses in uniform + Sarah Dubstar = grumpy northern Ladytron? If so, hurrah!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Client sound like Mono. not heard yet tho.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone i've met irl from ilx is much nicer and almost always more polite, friendly and even timid than their online equiv.

i'm actually a lot louder and more aggressive in real life. i usually don't let people bother me around here, since you can just read another thread and the issue disappears. i have much more of a temper with real people that won't go away...

and i am so not timid with people (well, except at charlie's party, and that was weird).

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Client had their uniforms made for them expensively and it broke my heart to tell Sarah about the supercheap chef/nurse/workman uniform store right next to Vogue House that could've done them for like a tenner each. We're ALL skint freelancers now innit.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, back up, so the Client is the same Client Andy Fletcher of Depeche manages? Cool...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

what flavour icy mechanical? it does sound suspiciously like electroclash to me...

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the first Dubstar album was the first album I ever owned! So, I am biased. But it's fab, really.

(I am immeasurably more socially confident and less twee offline, actually).

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

GO BUY THE RECORD AND FIND OUT. Sorry for shouting.

I like lots of electro stuff but Sarah is about as concerned with whether or not she's electroclash as Jo and Sue from the Human League.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

nothing wrong with electroclash

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, Joanne Catherall.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I am concerned whether everyone is electroclash.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post, gareth otm.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I am the electroclash Valerie Singleton.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I've no idea what electroclash is.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I started my new job today and saw about 200 electroclash people in 4 hours. I played some electroclash for them, also some playgroup dj kicks. Some had gone too far, and some looked great.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what's the job?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

oh wait, i remember

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yes. there was a thread.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan is the raviest investment banker.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "STOP PLAYING THOSE RECORDS AND DO SOME WORK FITZGERALD!"

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

But Ladytron are northern! Liverpool! Birkenhead! Glasgow!

Client sound similar to Ladytron and Mono and Dubstar. Hence I like them.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Manners and respect online for most subjects = classic
Manners and respect online for electroclash = dud

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

unless it's european electroclash

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ALLOR! VITALIC DOES NOT SOUND LIKE THEES...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Client is more like Weirdo european pop than Electroclash, Mono or Dubstar. New stuff is great.

weirdo pop, Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil off the money.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

dude Ronan if you only lived in Brooklyn...

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

that'd be great, I wish I did!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish you did too, but you'd definitely have a much different opinion about electroclash after witnessing the Brooklyn abomination in person.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty much the same online and in real life. I can get a bit sarcastic sometimes but I'm not really ever rude to anyone, I don't think. The rudest thing I do online is take forever to answer emails but I blame that on my dizzy lifestyle.

C J (C J), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

probably, I guess.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

the Hague stuff is pretty cool. The Brooklyn stuff is pretty wack.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Missed Ronan's thread, have to go search, grumble grumble.

Add my vote for Client.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(barima Job Interview tomorrow!)

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, I've a spare copy of Disgraceful (sans sleeve), if you want it mail me.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Email sent!
