New York Times criticizes its own coverage: is there a precedent for this?

I haven't looked at this very closely yet, possibly because it doesn't fit neatly into any of my pre-conceived categories.

Here's one of the NYT's own editorials about its reporting.

It's fascinating how it echoes some of the standard criticisms that are made by critics of the mainstream media (e.g., the information is there, but it's burried near the end of the article in some remote section). And this is not a case of unveiling a particular reporters fabrications. The NYT comments treat the problem as, in some sense, systemic.

I think this is a lot different from the Blair case, where it was focused on one individual reporter.

true, but what led to the Blair case was a systemic problem as well. And while Judith Miller didn't make up stories, her sources did.

Many people (I am not necessarily one of them) think this is about only one reporter, and that it's inappropriate that the response has referred to systemic problems.

where the system was a byproduct of the editorial personality. it's an issue wrt Miller as well
