"my favorite contemporary music is 70's funk"

oxymoronic, or can it be stretched to fit? we're arguing here...help

duke safire, Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess i feel the latter but am i being oppositional?

duke defense, Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Contemporary if he looks like , otherwise, dumb.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

'Contemporary' to mean 'current' is a fairly recent usage, I think (ie. the 'tempor' being assumed to refer to 'now'). Perhaps they were talking about something else from the 70s prior to this statement. GIVE US THE CONTEXT.

It would depend on the context.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(alternatively, perhaps they are very aged and perception of time is consequently stretched)

I thought this thread was going to be about photocopying in libraries, btw.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly. If it was an 18 yr old saying it it would be kind of weird, but if the person was in their 50s or 60s they might still see that kind of music as contemporary.

x-post

apparently young. not what you would call bright (guess he pronounced 'reggae' as 'reggie'), context just retail chit-chat with register dude. i guess i'm just saying he stumbled into a not-so-incorrect phrasing, idiot savant style...

duke savant, Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i wasn't there, i am not judging the person's character mind you, just interested in this liguistically...

duke disclaim, Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

linguistically

duke spell, Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

sexyDancerf, Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

As per official Duke University policy, there is no dope smoking allowed in Other Music.
