These films are mildly amusing, esp. if you like J. Seinfeld at all. But should one be outraged that this headline is "news" on the Washington Post web site? Is it possible that it's not some kind of collusion on the part of the military-industrial-entertainment complex? Somehow, doubt it.

NEW YORK -- Seinfeld and Superman are together again for another adventure.

Jerry Seinfeld and the superhero are costarring in a second online short film, titled "Hindsight Is 20/20," which premiered Thursday afternoon.

Okay, I don't mean "outraged." I mean two things.

1. Lookie! These movies are kind of fun.
2. Shabby that there's so much soft news in respected/respectable venues. Line between news and advertising doesn't exist. Sigh.

Skottie, Friday, 21 May 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Did no one else find these short films moderately entertaining?

Skottie, Friday, 21 May 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

they were on TV last night. I didn't watch 'em.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

there were two of em? i saw the one where they went to the musical. i couldn't stop laughing. part of it was from a What-The-Fuck factor, but it was pretty funny.

Yeah, I only saw the DVD player/Wyoming! one. It was fun.

The article about these in Slate a while back compared Superman's persona in the commercials to that of Space Ghost. OTM.

My brother and I have been fascinated by the seinfeld/superman link for ages.

is that Putty as the voice of superman?

Yes, did you know Jerry's father, Sol Seinfeld, inked a few issues of Superman in the early 50s? Michael Chabon has written an entire short story based on Sol's comic-book career, entitled "The Funnyman's Father."

NB: The above may not be true.

One of the best things about this:

is the introduction (and interview with Bizarro) by former Seinfeld writer David Mandel

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Can Bizarro Jerry be on the way?

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that was an actual Seinfeld episode, remember?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It was? All I remember along those lines was the actors playing the characters in the pilot that they did for NBC

There was that, yeah, but there was also a later episode (maybe last or next-to-last season?) with a "bizarro" plot. I don't actually know specifics -- it's the one Seinfeld episode I've always wanted to see and for whatever reason have never caught.

It's a good one - Elaine decides she needs to have other friends, so she starts hanging out with this different guy, who turns out to be the bizarro Jerry. He in turn has two friends, the bizarro George and the bizarro Kramer. They are like the opposites of Jerry, George, and Kramer (eg, bizarro George is well-adjusted, bizarro Kramer is boring). They also hang out at a different diner. Then at one point, one group of friends runs into the other group, and I don't remember what happens.

Every capsule would end with "...and I don't remember what happens."

This one's not bad - Murphy gets a new secretary, played by the woman who was the secretary in "Ferris Bueller." Some laughs there. Then Miles decides he wants to totally revamp "FYI," so Frank and Jim switch places at the news desk but they can't function outside their usual seats. Murphy cracks a joke about President Bush throwing up on the Japanese prime minister, and I don't remember what happens.

Strangely, I had not noted the Tony Blair - Jerry Seinfeld comparison until I saw that picture.

Here's the EW synopsis of the bizarro Jerry episode:

EPISODE 129

THE BIZARRO JERRY

FIRST AIRED 10/3/96 WRITER Mandel DIR. Ackerman SYNOPSIS Jerry's whole system breaks down as George becomes a model magnet, Kramer becomes a nine-to-five suit, and Elaine takes up with a trio of new buds (Kevin, Gene, and Feldman), the sensitive, cerebral opposites of her current klatch. If that isn't enough, Jerry's dating Gillian (Kristin Bauer), a man-handed woman. CRITIQUE This Superman reference writ large makes for the first post-David masterpiece. Two inspired moments: Jerry's wifely bickering with ersatz exec Kramer and the sidewalk showdown between Elaine's two worlds. A

Another wonderful thing about this music is the backwards version of the Seinfeld music riff that accompanies the bizarro friends.
