Movies with dragons in them - S/D

We was chatting in the pub last night, and I realised that there has not been a decent film with dragons in. We scratched our brains for ages, but could come up with nothing. Dragons are SOOOOOO cool - why no decent dragon movies? Or can you correct me?

dragonball z?

Come anticipate The Hobbit with me.

I remember loving Dragonslayer, the Peter McNichol movie -- when I was a kid, that and Excalibur ruled the roost in equal harmony. I have no idea if I'd still consider it good -- I can't remember the last time I saw it, and only barely remember what it was about.

Reign of Fire was fun in a Postman/Mad Max sort of post-disaster sort of way, but doesn't really count as a dragon movie.

Dragon Heart had a nice premise ...

NeverEnding Story - Best Dragon Character Ever

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, if that counts, that goes in the Search column. (I guess it counts, but ... Falkir? Falkon? Fallon? ... was as much sheep dog as dragon.)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Dragonslayer upset me dreadfully. Even today I can't watch a tethered virgin being devoured by a flame-breathing mythic beats without running away and crying.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

If winged serpents are dragons, then the correct answer is Q - The Winged Serpent.

Godzilla's kind of close, isn't he? (At least, about as close as Quetzalcoatl?)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Godzilla breathes fire, his head in the sky, but doesn't have wings so doesn't count.

Gadzooky on the other hand has wings and can fly a bit but can't breathe fire and his head isn't in the sky seeing as he's only ickle, innit.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Flight of the Dragon I think it's called, where a nerd accidentally falls into his RPG.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Um...Shrek? I'd file it under destroy but the kids like it.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

D: Reign Of Fire (altho the dragons look pretty cool - what little you see of them)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Rankin/Bass "Hobbit" has the best dragon voice: Richard Boone as Smaug.

Reign of Fire was god-awful. Was Dragon Heart the one with the dragons done by Jim Henson?

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Flight of Dragons, is what it is called - very good film. Dragonheart was voiced by Sean Connery - "I'm the fucking dragon, by the way". It's awful.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't there a film of dungeons and dragons? I'd have assumed that had dragons in it?

I think this has been asked before, but....

Did Don McLean compose the music for the 'Flight of the Dragons' movie released in 1982?
CDnow include his name on the credits as composer.

Is this the same Don McLean? I seem to remember that Don McLean confirmed that he, in fact, was not involved in the project.

Don said no some time ago - but this was made 20 years ago - he may have forgotten - but just to be sure I have ordered a copy from CDNow to be sent to Don at home so that he can definately confirm .If not the kids can watch the
video anyway .

The video is apparently also known as "The Flight of Dragons." The Internet Movie Database lists Don as the author of the title song only. (I can hear it now: "Are you a dragon victim?/I bet you are..."

Another source lists the author as DAN McLean (Don's evil twin?) with "backing vocals by the 'Rainbow Connection'". Curiouser and curiouser. Please let us know what you find out, Bob.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I still have a crush on the dragon from Shrek. Now that's she's a mother I'll back off though.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Is dungeons and dragons any good? I avoided seeing it cause I heard it was guff.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Rankin/Bass "Hobbit" has the best dragon voice: Richard Boone as Smaug.

He did spectacularly well, yes. If they ever do get around to filming The Hobbit live action, as Tep notes, with Jackson/the WETA crew, it will be the business.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Red Dragon.
Falcor is the flying sheep dogs name. Not a very good dragon though.

Numan, Friday, 21 May 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Spirited Away.

also Legend of the 4 kings, doomed megalopolis, except they're miniseries.

NeverEnding Story - Most Lecherous Dragon Character Ever

Watch it again if you don't believe me.

No doubt, Adam.

The best thing about Falcor is the ridiculously guttural yell he emits when he increases his flight speed.

martin m. (mushrush), Sunday, 23 May 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The dragon that the witch in Disney's Sleeping Beauty turned into used to scare me as a kid.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 23 May 2004 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, my video of it states that the song 'flight if dragons' is, indeed, by Don Mclean, and I can add that if that's not him I'll eat my feet.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 23 May 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

search: the seventh voyage of sinbad and jason and the argonauts. (and there's got to be at least one other ray harryhausen movie with a dragon, isn't there?)

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 23 May 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I remember the flight of dragons song!

Flight of dragons . .
dum de dum de dum
through the sky
and through my miiiiind.

Etc.

Johnney B, Sunday, 23 May 2004 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked Reign of Fire because it took itself COMPLETELY seriously, even with the premise being inherently rediculous. Plus Matthew McWhat's-his-name had the best role ever, he was so psycho.
