I now have a TV (and cable service) after about 13 years wihtout one.
(I am supposed to have cable internet too, but I don't yet.)
The first thing the cable technician had on my TV was a horrible movie about a rich man compromising an ostensibly principled attorney, getting her to work for him, etc. (This is probably a famous movie, right?) I immediately felt a little regret about having a TV once more.
Music videos: Based on last night's sampling, hip-hop videos are still more fun to watch than the typical atrociously boring rock video. At the same time, if anything I was suprised that hip-hop videos hadn't changed more since I used to see them regularly. (I have seen very few since then.)
The President: It's one thing to read excerpts from his talks, or even to hear sound-bites on the radio, but to actually see him saying some of these outrageous things he has said is pretty scarey. Some of his appropriation of religious rhetoric should really be considered blasphemous by evangelicals (e.g., his use of phrases from the beginning of the Gosepl of John, which describe Christ, in talking about the United States). On the other hand, it might not trouble evangelicals, but it is deeply troubling to me to see the president hold up a Bible and say that it's the guidebook that some faith-based organization runs its day-care by, instead of all that federal regulation stuff. (Is there any law-suit in the works to question the constitionality of this faith-based b.s. or has that already been found accpetable by the Supreme Court?)

Rockist, there's something about your posts on popular culture that remind me of what someone from another planet would say, in a good way.

I will not leave the planet until I have rid it of all evil doers.

Ah yes, the film of which you speak is
Two Weeks' Notice, starring Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock. It's one of the new breed of romantic comedies where the young heroine can't be just some society girl or work in a department store, but must have a serious career, while the hero gets to just be the same sort of vague millionaire investor type he has always been.
It's a well-known film, but not necessarily a good film.
Sometimes I think about getting rid of my tv, but I'm just too shallow.

Hugh Grant and Sandra BullockAre they always this bad, or was this just a bad script?
(I also caught part of a documentary about Brown v. Board of Education on a community access channel which ended up being kind of interesting.)

(Getting back to Bush: also, the idea that any mere human or country could rid the world of "evil doers" is contrary to any reasonably orthodox Christian eschatology.
Never mind less faith-based objections.)
