well, do you? and do you think yahoo groups are a Good Thing?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 21 May 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

it's where a lot of mailing lists wound up after losing their .edu servers and the like, so, yes.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 21 May 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

DAN SELZER TO THREAD!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I belong to four:

canastaband is for my band. We used to use it for all band e-mail communication, but sometimes the e-mails arrived late, so we don't use it for that anymore. But we still maintain a calendar on the Yahoogroups site, which I think is a good thing for scheduling shows, etc.

freaks95 is a group started by some people I went to high school with -- a dozen or so friends who were a year above me. It's a public group, and I found it while Googling the names of random people from high school. It's not used very much, but occasionally I'll check in to find that someone's getting married or whatever.

fawc (aka Friends of Aaron Writing Club) was started by my friend Aaron as a, well, writing club. The idea was you post a poem or short story (or whatever) you've written, and the group gives you feedback. I've never had time for it; I think it's sort of died a slow death.

kaytee is a fan group for the singer-songwriter Kaytee Bodle. I put out a winter-themed compilation CD a couple of years ago and wanted her to be on it, but I didn't have her contact info. So I joined the group in order to get her e-mail address.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 May 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, mike hanley group, ilx moderators, 12ft lizards, I subscribed to some nanotech one as well. Most of these groups aren't very active.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 21 May 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I belong to the following yahoo groups:

Tigermilking, Corduroy Smoke and Space Cadets - all Belle & Sebastian related.

London Indie - self explanatory

London Indie 2 - also self explanatory, but inactive and I'm not sure why it exists

How Does It Feel? - Originally the message board for the London club nite of that name was hosted on the howdoesitfeel website, but later a yahoo group was set up.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 21 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

nyhappenings is my yahoo group.

electrodiscopunks and recordcamp are both relatively interesting music discussion groups with many crossover people.

spockmorgue is the bay area noise hipster scene I visit occasionally.

a few KBD/Punk77 type boards.

a few more.

honestly, yahoogroups sucks and nyhappenings will go indiependent soon. No reason why yahoo should make advertising revenue instead of me. Expect nyhappenings.org to be a one-stop for ny scene, community, profiles, editors, forums, the whole deal. Eventually.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 21 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

NYHAPPENINGS BITCHES!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think yahoogroups are a good thing...I quite like the interface and feel that they are kind of an "internet within the internet" in that they have a lot of online features bundled within them, like the ability to host pics, send e-mails, send public messages to a board and a chatroom, but - haha - HAS ANYONE EVER USED THE CHATROOMS IN YAHOOGROUPS EVER??? I find the ads infuriating, of course, but at least they have the decency to remind you that this is what funds the blessed thing.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 21 May 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yahoogroups will fuck yr email account though. If I could go back in time I'd use a different email account just to access yahoogroups. I get spam and much of it is related to/originates from yahoogroups.

btw, my yahoogroup has 2,342 members, 432 of which are bouncing. All through word of mouth.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

+++++ generally speaking, I think they are a good thing, in that you get a useful way of staying in touch w/people who share some interest, for free. The advertising thing is annoying undoubtedly, especially when you're attempting to browse thee archives, and yuo get that "we are an advertising supported service" blurb but I suppose someone has to pay for all that bandwidth.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I belong to three. I get email from one. One of the others belongs to me, and has one member (gues who).

SRH (Skrik), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I belong to loads, but most of them are inactive now :(
but i haven't bothered to unsubscribe in the hope that one day someone will say something interesting.

And it also makes me feel more popular, when my mail program tells me that i've got new mail every 5 minutes or so.

they sure as hell seem to think i belong to some!

j., Monday, 11 November 2019 05:45 (six years ago)

Well, did you reply to the reply all and say “Please remove me as well”?

Irae Louvin (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 11 November 2019 05:49 (six years ago)

it's not closing? they're just removing the files and polls and whatnot.

van dyke parks generator (anagram), Monday, 11 November 2019 06:00 (six years ago)

Yes but as a result of that lots of groups are pulling up stakes and moving elsewhere. If you had a dormant membership set to web only you might start getting every single email again when they switch hosts.

Irae Louvin (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 11 November 2019 10:52 (six years ago)

Shame I did a lot of research and stuff though a couple of the lists several years ago. So would be good to have them there to go back to still.
