I am apparently eating at the Chaya Brasserie tonight in Los Angeles

Its webpage is here -- it's for a friend's bachelor party, and I admit based on the menu I'm drooling with anticipation already. Still, I know little beyond the name, so it is all it's cracked up to be? Anyone else ever been there? Am I looking at a meal bill that could run into the triple digits?

How weird. I'm going to eat here on Monday. I've never been but it is my girlfriend's favorite restaurant.

I ate there about 2 months ago. Quite tasty and SOMEONE ELSE PAID!!! Hooray! Steve Martin and Chris O'Donnell were both there at an adjacent table.

It's an "industry hangout" but unlike most "hangouts" the food is supposed to be quite good. The lychee martini is apparently the drink of choice.

SOMEONE ELSE PAID!!!

Always worthy. We got our table through connections -- one of the other fellers attending tonight's brother or brother in law, I forget which, works there. I note the lychee martini recommendation -- hell, they have a full section for foo foo drinks, so why not?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, can you please report back here afterwards? I'd like to know what to expect (and eat).

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Saturday, 22 May 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yus. I believe a camera or two is being brought along as well, so hopefully there will be pictures of spiff food to share!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice. I am really looking forward to eating there and not paying for it.

I just spoke with my girlfriend and she said that she usually gets sushi when she's there. She says they have a lobster roll that's really great. She also recommends the seaweed salad. Her father usually gets the duck salad, but she hasn't had it. That's all I've got.

Noted. The groom is a noted food fanatic himself, as are just about everyone else attending, and I suspect he's been there before. We'll see, though!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Chaya isn SF was fantastic if overpriced.

Michael White (Hereward), Saturday, 22 May 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

How much did the dishes run, from what you recall?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

if you have to ask...

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 22 May 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't worry, Phil, I'm actually selling you in a blind auction to raise the money.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Phil blind? And isn't an auction of the blind rather insensitive?

Skottie, Saturday, 22 May 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a cruel man.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

trade me in for some profiteroles

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 22 May 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Readily done.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

did the SF location close?

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 22 May 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a very spiff meal. More later.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 May 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, to sum up: So I had a lychee martini, quite delicious. Appetizers included an excellent fresh tuna and some fine sushi. Main meal was a seared tuna steak in a spicy soy reduction, with wasabi mashed potatoes, bok choy, shiitake mushrooms. Dessert included an excellent tiramisu and a fallen chocolate cake. Price = $50 before tax and tip. I definitely got my money's worth. Ambience is excellent, really enjoyable all around.

YUM

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 23 May 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

only $50? thats pretty reasonable for three courses and a drink and a tip

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 23 May 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how on the website the beverage director brags about how good the $20 wine is.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 23 May 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

a tip

Ah, note I said 'before tax and tip.' ;-) And actually I realized I did get something wrong with the price -- the desserts were provided compliments of the house, apparently due to the party nature of the dinner. So skew that up more some if you go just for the heck of it, but it was still reasonable -- counting tax, tip and my share for the groom's meal, the final amount was $70, still easily handled.

Other main dishes included what looked like a spectacular venison and a stuffed sea bass (the latter is what the groom ordered).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 May 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i went to the venice location a few times in the mid-90s, it was pretty good, although honestly i don't remember too many details.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 23 May 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

One day, when I am rich and famous, I will go to Los Angeles and eat at the Chaya Brasserie. It sounds lovely.

C J (C J), Sunday, 23 May 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds great! Lucky Ned!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 23 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

good LA restaurants = love

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 23 May 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Much love, sir. Now that you are flush and all that, you should consider taking your wife there. Or the SF one if you like. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 May 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely. I booked the Little Door for our visit in June, so we will see.
