I think Shrek having a big lipped donkey voiced by Eddie Murphy is weird and racist. Share your cringing race moments.

"classic" thread. Hrm.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 23 May 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(not knocking you MrD, that thread just got on my goat thanks to a certain mr S trife's attitude therein, but ne'er mind).

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 23 May 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, well, hmmm.. uh, maybe "classic" in the sense that it's a microcosm of ILX as a whole?? (yeah, I actually forgot about that unfortunate unpleasantness, Trayce)

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 23 May 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah thats a good point actually, sad as it is! *wry grin*

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 23 May 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

But..about Shrek?

aimurchie, Sunday, 23 May 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Goodbye tiny rhread* we loved you for a short time and we will miss you* We will always love your sister. *sob*

aimurchie, Sunday, 23 May 2004 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

aimurchie, I agree with you on Shrek! It always bugged me. I couldn't even watch the thing all the way through, the only time I saw it. Not solely because of the Eddie Murphy thing, though.. I just found it colossally boring. But I'm not really a big animation guy anyway.

On "Fresh Air" the other day, Edelstein basically said the same thing you did, and that he hated the original ... and then went on to sort of apologize for it and say the new one was actually really great. Meh.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 23 May 2004 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I just figured the donkey was done like he was to fit Eddie Murphy as a character, same as say, the dragon in Dragonheart was Sean Connery. That doesnt strike me as particularly racist! I mean really, the donkey WAS Eddie Murphy. Why read more into it? Its just a silly kids film.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 23 May 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"I just figured the donkey was done like he was to fit Eddie Murphy as a character, same as say, the dragon in Dragonheart was Sean Connery."
Maybe I am the only one in the entire world that thinks a braying big teethed donkey is a bad image for a black american to choose. Shrek is about loving a cartoon - the green one is the white one in this narrative, it's for KID'S a nd what is the message. The donkey is the sidekick.

Does Murphy have to project a positive image in every movie? People of all races have played these sidekick "jackass" roles. I think you are being over-sensitive here. You should direct your anger at that horrible fortune-cookie woman instead.

Frok Henderson, Sunday, 23 May 2004 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

MAGIC NEGRO TO THREAD~!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 23 May 2004 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" purports to be a progressive, even abolitionist, book. In truth its portrayal of black Americans is nothing short of patronizing.

Frok Henderson, Sunday, 23 May 2004 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"Does Murphy have to project a positive image in every movie? People of all races have played these sidekick "jackass" roles. I think you are being over-sensitive here. You should direct your anger at that horrible fortune-cookie woman instead."

perhaps. I shall agree that playing a "jackass" - black or white or in between - is historic. BUT blackface jackass comes from a racist place - travelling, vaudeville theater. Theaters that were white only.
Eddie Murphy should just make a decent movie and relieve me of this. maybe I am overly sensitive - but the big teeth and the big lips and the "jive" really bother me.
of course, I've never seen the movie - just the ads.

aimurchie, Sunday, 23 May 2004 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw an episode of Hong Kong Phooey a couple of weeks ago for the first time in at least fifteen years and for the first time realised HKP = black guy. Penry the mild mannered janitor is doing the low-paid job in an otherwise all white police station. His voice as well makes it obvious. This all went over my head when I was a kid.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 23 May 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Cultural context = very important.

But "Eddie Murphy as a character" has been pretty close to "minstrel character" for a while. The PJs to thread.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 23 May 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

for the first time realised HKP = black guy

He was meant to be Chinese, shurely? Not that that makes it any better.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 24 May 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i really don't see the problem with the donkey. so it evokes certain minstrel types, so what? it's not ACTUALLY a minstrel routine. there's nothing actually racist about it.

I'm sure Quick Change fits in here - but I can't remember why...

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Fez on that 70s show. The less funnier the jokes were the more racist they seemed (that seems like a racist comment too. what i meant - when they just started it felt like they were making jokes about american prejudice towards foreiners in 70s, but in the later seasons it shifted towards lame plain "ha ha, fez is a foreigner, it's funny" kinda jokes).

aimurchie, Friday, 23 March 2007 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

Kidding, btw. I'm shocked that I started this thread! I'm having a "way back" moment.

I still think the donkey in Shrek is pretty much an ugly stereotype from the past.

aimurchie, Friday, 23 March 2007 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's the animations that bring out those stereotypes (as well as implying cross-species eroticism on occasion).

moley, Friday, 23 March 2007 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

I want more cross-species eroticism, please. On nuILX.

aimurchie, Saturday, 24 March 2007 01:05 (nineteen years ago)

I've seen those Rob & Big Black trailers, and yeah they prompted a more WTF reaction that any bottle opener.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 24 March 2007 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah that whole show has a weird dynamic to it.

Don't ask me why I've seen it.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 24 March 2007 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

Steendriver - Why have you seen it?

(I have seen it, and it is very weird.)

aimurchie, Saturday, 24 March 2007 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

Thing that bothers me is this: I suppose it's possible 'Rob and Big' was developed from an original concept by Mr. Black, or perhaps the established comedy duo of Mr. Black and Mr. Rob. But if, as seems all too likely, it was constructed around Mr. Rob, this implies the possibility of a 'Hollywood Shuffle' style casting process that just makes my toes curl to think about.

two years pass...

Universal changed "Couples Retreat" marketing material for the film's UK release, and removed the black actors from both the poster's photo and the list of stars typed out.

The film, which features four couples who go on vacation together, costars Faizon Love as a divorced man who takes his new girlfriend along, played by Kali Hawk.

Below are the UK (left) and the US (right) poster.

The Mail on Sunday reports:

The studio said it regretted causing offence and has abandoned plans to use the revised poster in other countries... A Universal spokesman said the revised advert aimed 'to simplify the poster to actors who are most recognisable in international markets'.

velko, Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:12 (sixteen years ago)

to simplify the poster to actors who are most recognisable in international markets

did seem fairly obvious. its jean reno i feel sorry for.

mdskltr (blueski), Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:14 (sixteen years ago)

tbf the international poster does look better. The huge red arrow ruins the original imo haha etc...

DavidM, Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

uk also ok with more bloated looking vince vaughn

velko, Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

simplify the racism more like - the vague unease over why the black couple is so far back and so unclear simplified to the blatant racism of just getting rid of them completely

lex pretend, Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:18 (sixteen years ago)

Universal changed "Couples Retreat" marketing material for the film's UK release, and removed the black actors from both the poster's photo and the list of stars typed out.

The point w/r/2 the black actors not being in the photo/credits is a fair one, but the piece gives the impression that the black couple has been shopped out of the "poster's photo", when they are actually 2 different photos altogether? Seems a bit, I dunno, dishonest, the way it's written.

mu-mu (Pashmina), Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:18 (sixteen years ago)

+ no Peter Serafinowicz on the poster = no cred anyway.

DavidM, Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

idk what kind of film it is - the US poster looks like it'll be a thriller/horror, there's more of a sense of isolation and creepiness about it; the international poster looks like it'll be a comedy of manners/romcom.

lex pretend, Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

And yeah, as per Lex, in the international poster, the not-white couple is way, way at the back! Might be worth addressing that, whoever published the orig article.

mu-mu (Pashmina), Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

ok that movie is obv a comedy wtf?

plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

there's more of a sense of isolation and creepiness about it

That's true actually. Not just in the way the characters are spaced apart in the dark water, but the landscape behind them, the bare mountain rising ominously.

DavidM, Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

the not-white couple is way, way at the back! - also, the artist has cleverly camouflaged the fellow by blending his face in w/ the mountains & his shirt w/ the water. wtf is up w/ that?

gerbl (Pillbox), Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

On the international poster they look like holiday-makers, on the US like plane crash survivors.

DavidM, Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

the water stains on their clothing on the US poster add to this too - makes their being in the water seem less voluntary

i really do hope the film company has to explain this b/c it's obv 100% indefensible

lex pretend, Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:26 (sixteen years ago)

the edited photo looks better = 100% defensible

iatee, Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

There's a plot summary on imdb which suggests a romcom of some sort. Apparently the film features a guitar hero duel between 2 of the characters.

mu-mu (Pashmina), Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

The point w/r/2 the black actors not being in the photo/credits is a fair one, but the piece gives the impression that the black couple has been shopped out of the "poster's photo", when they are actually 2 different photos altogether? Seems a bit, I dunno, dishonest, the way it's written.

These aren't two "photos" of 8 actors standing in the water. The posters themselves are photoshop collages of a bunch of different elements. Making a new version without black ppl in it, is akin to "removing" them imo

freek-a-leekanomics (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 15 November 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

the international one is a real hack job generally - the distance between the sand relative to the deepness of the water Vaughan and co are standing in is totally unrealistic. INDEFENSIBLE.

I actually thought it was weird that the TV commercials for Couples Retreat only mentioned Vince Vaughn's name. He's definitely the biggest star, but I'd have thought Bateman, Bell, and Davis would've at least warranted an "also starring" credit.

bamcquern, Sunday, 15 November 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

kennyfasugbe

People excusing this act because it is only a different photo and that it is only meant to make profit overseas are really missing the point here. Racial sensitivity demands attention to rifts such as this as created. Not only that, it also speaks to the racism in the United Kingdom, of which Universal Studios is ready to appease just to make an extra buck or two! This act is deplorable. Simple! Removing a black couple who I believe is not just an extra in the movie, but plays a significant part is to me acrimonious and in a very bad taste, regardless if different pictures are used or not.
This Movie needs to be shunned for what Universal Studios has exposed itself to be: an appeaser of European countries racism! If this movie were to be played in some African countries where the white actors are not known, would they remove all the pale skin faces and names from the posters? Go figure!
