I'm sorry, the official name is AIR DJIBOUTI. can't believe I fucked that up.

Also this thread can be about Djibouti in general. Anyone been there?

from what i've read, djibouti sounds like one of the MOST UNPLEASANT places on earth that isn't in iraq. examples: (a) country evenly split b/w 2 nationalities that HATE each other; (b) a COOL day is when it is ONLY 90 degrees; and (c) nothing but DESERT.

actually, sounds pretty interesting!!

a myth about the danakils/afars (one of the native peoples of djibouti, and printed in robert young pelton's world's most dangerous places): that a danakil bridegroom must present their brides w/ the testicles of an adversary recently killed in combat!

and here's the lonely planet entry on djibouti --> http://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinations/africa/djibouti/

Sounds like the American Southwest.

Aw Ed, don't be hatin' on the PIA. They gave me a very nice flight bag when I was a nipper. I left (cheese'n'onion) crisps in it for too long once though and had to throw it out because it was so smelly.

uh, sadly not a myth. the afar, who are actually nomadic and so are found in Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti do have that charming custom, tho combat is not necessary. This tends to be the subject of nervous jokes and slight discomfort when traveling in very rural areas they inhabit. still get occasional news stories about truckers bleeding to death after an unfortunate encounter with hopeful groom.

This thread is ominously lacking in puns.

H, how safe is Harar for Americans? (not exactly on topic, but it's close to Djibouti!) I'm assuming the dislike of foreigners has only increased in the past few years, but everything I've heard suggests that it's not so dangerous for non-Hararis, just, at time, unpleasant.

i hope you dont get eaten by hyenas

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 29 May 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I would prefer not to.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Saturday, 29 May 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Harar, well Ethiopia ethiopia is pretty safe as a whole, and americans have no problems here. at worst you get harassed by beggars which is a function of wealth and mebbe arguments in bars abt foreign policy but that is not directed at individuals.

to return to above, the afar thing does happen but is not really common enuf to warrant serious thought. Addis itself is probably the safest city on the continent, most everyone who gets posted here after time elsewhere concurs on that

H (Heruy), Saturday, 29 May 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i read that book "Dark Star Safari" by Paul Theroux. he's a cranky old man, but it had some funny'ish stories about harar.
