dealing with people that are late

so last week at work, i had an appointment for a guy to come meet with me. he wants to pick my brains a bit and hopefully we can work together in harmonious partnership and save neighborhoods and all that jazz.

he was supposed to arrive at 2. after 4 he rang and said he had gotten 'very busy'. he wanted to reschedule. i refused to meet thursday or friday. he said first thing monday. i said ok, i have a diary meeting at 10:30, come anytime from 10:45-11.

he's still not here (it's 1:15). no call, no email.

what can i do about this? if it was a friend, i'd tell him to fuck off and then we'd get over it. but not so appropriate in this situation, i think.

how do you deal with people that are late? also, are you someone that is chronically late?

(i'm putting this in the 'asshats' category, it seemed to fit)

You could just ask him if anything's going on. Maybe his Gran's dying or something. Otherwise I'd point out that he won't be any use to you, or you to him, if he can't keep even roughly to appointment.

I operate under the principle that everybody gets one warning, but I have to be disciplined (mean) enough to be explicit in what I expect and what their actions convey to me.

The next time he tried to schedule an appointment with you, tell him politely but firmly that he did not keep his last two appointments and that if he does not keep this one you will not schedule any more appointments with him. That's all you have to say. As Andrew says, he may have Shit Going On, but that doesn't mean you have to be jerked around by him.

yeah, i think this is the way to do it. i just can't believe that he did this twice! once was bad enough, but doing it twice was really taking the piss...

its only work, i dont care if work people are late. i dont want to do any work anyway

gareth (gareth), Monday, 24 May 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It's for other people's benefit is I think the catch.

this is one thing that aggravates me more than anything in life. I hate people who are consistently late. Especially when they can't take a second to make a phone call.

Yes, Gareth, but you play with servers and stuff, Colette's job involves SAVING THE WORLD!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 May 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

grrrr. just got an email from him saying he went to our old office, since our website didn't have the new address listed. which is a lie. both the website we were meeting to talk about and the website for my organisation have the info available on EVERY PAGE.

wanker.

Is Colette trying to form a Justice League type of thing?

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 24 May 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Colette, REAM this man.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 24 May 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really mind it. If anything I hate people who are always early - especially Japanese people think this is polite, not realizing that it annoys the HELL outa me. ;-)

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 24 May 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I just sorta shrug and think they'll turn up eventually, or give them half an hour or so and maybe call or email them.

i don't really mind people who are late, although most of the time i'm later than them.

Waiting for late people is my number one hatred-inducing, uh, thing. I can feel my chest tightening just thinking about it. Obviously sometimes you can't help it, but consistent lateness is so completely disrespectful, like their time is more important than anyone else's. Note: I am always, always incredibly and dorkily early for everything. I have time panic.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 24 May 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I AM WITH NA 4000%
