yeah, i saw that -- really nasty, very serious -- accusation about lawler made in a few of the clips i watched yesterday. terry funk said, over-and-over, that lawler was a "baby-banger." it was a cringeworthy moment, and it struck me as the kind of accusation that would normally be out-of-bounds, even for professional wrestling.

any truth to this allegation?

p well known fact, his *ahem* *personal life* is why he didn't turn up at survivor series 93 and had to be replaced by shawn michaels

but a 13 or 14 year-old girl? that's shocking, unless he was cleared of the charges (or at least informally exonerated of the accusation). otherwise i can't see how the WWE would let him continue as a performer or announcer.

okay, i dared do a GOOGLE search on this. found wiki's entry on lawler, which says:

In 1993, Lawler was indicted for raping and sodomizing a 15-year old girl, which caused him to miss Survivor Series 1993.[52] The charges were later dropped, after the girl admitted she fabricated some of the story.

(emphasis mine). by contrast, an FAQ page on lawler -- linked to in the wiki article -- says:

Soon after Lawler was indicted but before the case could go to court the girl admitted that she had made up the whole thing. (emphasis mine). big discrepency here, and whether it's the former or the latter would weigh heavily in someone's impression of lawler -- but frankly, putting himself in that position is totally distasteful, even if he isn't guilty. and the fact that others in the wrestling community feel comfortable making light of the accusations strikes me as very strange.

I dunno. Vince has a good history of dealing w/ shady characters. Jimmy Snuka killed a woman, Sid Vicious stabbed Arn Anderson and still worked with him for ages etc. etc.

Both with Snuka and Lawler, they had Vince in their corner much like footballers who get accused of rape seemingly *all* get the charges knocked off after agents get involved.

i didn't know that snuka killed someone! anyway, as to lawler and to state the obv., there's still a world of difference between the victim recanting just "some" of her claim, as opposed to admitting she made the "whole thing" up.
