card games s/d

i had to serve my jury duty the other week and the only form of entertainment at the jury waiting room was a pack of cards. i got soooo bored with playing solitaire on my own.

I wanted to ask somebody "Hi do you fancy a game of <card game name>" and I realised that I KNEW NOTHING.

The only game i knew was Texas River Hold'em No Limit as played on Late Night Poker on C4 and now Poker Million, but I thought actaully GAMBLING inside a court wouldn't have been too cleer a thing to do.

What are good card games? And where can I learn (website links pls)? I always heard of this whisk(??) game, how does it work? it sounds like it involves wanking.

Also anyone in london fancy a Late Night Poker??????

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i also know of "Mao" but I have bad memories of it.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I love tortuously long card games with amazingly complicated rules, but I don't like any form of poker because I can never remember how much I'm supposed to bet at any time.

Shithead is fun: http://www.pagat.com/beating/shithead.html but I find that if you don't play it regularly you tend to forget the rules.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I love sh!thead.

there was another we played at school which iinvolved big piles of vards too, whichj I enjoyed but can't remember.

A nice game of rummy is always good too.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Canasta is a great card game (I think) I used to play it years ago but I've forgotten how to play.

I vaguely remember playing Rummy with two decks of cards. It made it more difficult and much longer. Actually, now that I remember, it was a great game too.

penelope_111, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Awww, Mao is great :( Plausibly not suitable for jury duty, tho.

Whist is simple and fun, I guess! Tarok? Ombre? All of these are for three or more, though. Are there are good two player ones? Snap?

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah snap! esp good for hand touchage opportunities.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Blob, a.k.a. Prediction Whist. Make up a score chart with the intials of the players along the top and down the side write C, D, H, S, NT for the four suits plus no trumps. All of the cards are dealt out....if there are 4 players this means that each player gets 13 each in the first round (when clubs are trumps) they get 12 cards each in the next, 11 in the next and so on.

Each player looks at their hand and decides on the basis of what they've got how many tricks they'll think they'll win. The player to the left of the dealer predicts first. However, you'll want to ensure that not everyone predicts correctly and wins for the round, so there is a twist in that the last player is NOT ALLOWED to predict a number of won tricks which means that the total predicted adds up to the no. of cards dealt for that round. So if there are four players and four cards are dealt to each, if each of the first 3 players to predict says they'll win one trick, the final player to predict cannot say 1 - they have to predict 0 or 2, 3 or 4.

The dealer writes down the no. of tricks predicted under each player's name then play begins. Aces are high. You must follow suit if you can. If you can't follow suit you can opt to trump the cards that have been laid or lay down a suit which is not following suit or trumps, depending on whether you want to win or not. At the end of the round each player who has predicted correctly gets 10 points + the no. of tricks they predicted. Everyone who didn't predict correcly is scratched and their prediction is blobbed out (hence the name of the game).

Shithead is fantastic - also works really well between two people when there is something at stake, it gets dead tactical. I can post the rules as and when I remember them.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I like playing rummy & black jack. Just search on google & I'm sure you'll find the rules. We had a poker night recently, but it ended in a huge argument! Isn't the game 'whist'?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yes.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

My first post was lost :( I summoned Markelby to thread to tell about Scopa.

Rummy is also fun--I learned it while playing with about 4 decks and 6-8 people.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

how does rummy work?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

can you play it as a drinking game?

rum rummy?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

uno.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i love uno actually - although i never own the cards :(

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, and did they ever make the computer version??

Uno for DOS.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I adore 500, Prostdoy Durack (this is clearly spelt incorrectly) and Skat.

Blob/Prediction Whist sounds like the same game as Oh Hell/Up The River, Down The River. That's a very good game too, must echo the love for it.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know many card games that don't involve alcohol (I can squeak by in poker and blackjack though).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone want to play Asshole?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to play Hearts on my computer obsessively. It's a pretty good game, but I played it too much and got sick of it.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I am an only child so I know a million solitaire games. :(

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I am an only child and I never learned how to play solitaire until my senior year of college! Or Minesweeper. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, there was this Indian card game that I used to play at college, I must try and find out the name.

Used to play Rummy and Whist a lot.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Pitch is an easy game that 3 to 6 people can play .. the hands go pretty fast - it's a great game to play while bullshittin' and/or drinking beer. You don't really have to concentrate too hard ...

i have hello kitty uno cards. :) they're also a favorite up at Sh1ps lounge. nothing like a bunch of drunks and a rousing game of Uno.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

No mention of Euchre yet on this thread? Where are all the midwesterners?? Best card game for drinking.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

London ILX Fancy a Poker is a grebt idea. `lets make it so. If people fancy a bridge instead, this is also cool.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

SPEED!!

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Magic: The Gathering.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ian, want to buy my old magic cards? i feel ashamed that i still have them. i was confused and 14.

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Best two-player card game: Cribbage.

Best four-player card game: Euchre.

I am a bit sad that I didn't get to play any cribbage with Bryan when I was in Winnipeg.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i in no way support spending money on magic cards. that said, it's fun to pull out my old cards when i'm fucked up and in the mood for ELVES.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

damn. i will never get rid of these things

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

eBay them.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

thats what i will prolly end up doing, but i wanted an easy way out :)

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

crazy 8s. It's the only thing I can play other than blackjack.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

that game where you throw down poker hands is great.

also, as far as solitare i'm a big Montana fan. Essentially: deal four rows of thirteen in a grid. Remove the aces. In each of the blank spots, you can move the card that's immediately following in suit and number the card to its left. In the leftmost column, a blankspot takes an arbitrary two. A blankspot following a king is "dead". (unless you move the king away). The object is to build from the twos on up until the entire grid is in order. You can remove the cards not yet in order, shuffle and redeal (leaving blankspots behind each of the ordered parts of the rows) twice. To make it easier, give yrself three or four redeals.

V. addictive.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

that game where you throw down poker hands is great.

I think that's 13.

Leee's a Simpson (Leee), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and there's the "big 2" game that is played everywhere in hong kong.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Maria is good - I used to play it a lot at school. (It's the game that Microsoft calls 'Hearts' for no apparent reason because THAT'S NOT IT'S NAME IT'S BLACK MARIA DAMMIT.) Needs 4 people, though.

Contract Whist is rather good, but I can never remember how the scoring works.

A friend of mine once invented Competitive Patience. It has lots of opportunities for physical contact, hand touching, paper cuts, serious injury...

A couple of friends of mine are good enough at Texas Hold'em that they manage to play it online and make a profit. I keeping meaning to try and learn how.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Mandee once taught me a card game where you sometimes had to lie, or guess when other people were. I've forgotten the name and the rules now, but that was fun. Drink was involved. I am a poor liar.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I think I know that one. I also cannot remember what it is called.

I've never played Mao, but I'm told it's like a card-game version of Mornington Crescent.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to be a Mao dealer. I have also forgotten things regarding Mao.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone here play 110?

http://www.pagat.com/spoil5/25.html

Michael B, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheat!

penelope_111, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I tried to get some friends to play 1000 Blank Cards, but they pointed out that none of us could draw well enough.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Contract Whist (blob upthread, or nomination as I used to know it) is probably your best game for 4 (although you can get away with three, and five at a push). If for four, play as pairs in a sort of cut-down bridge style.

Cribbage is not only the best two player game (although I have played it with four in the past), it's the best card game period .

Cheat is sufficiently easy to pick up that my kids (9 and 6) are pretty good at it, so it's probably a good one to teach people who don't know any other card games.

I'd Fancy A Poker, but I'm not in London. I'd consider the journey if it was bridge though...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to remember spending an entire weekend playing Strip Jack Naked and enjoying it an awful lot. I was in Shropshire. I was 10. I can't even remember how it works now. That was the weekend I almost choked on a barley sugar, but was too embarrassed to tell my hosts. I'd like to say I performed the Heimlich manoeuvre on myself surreptitiously, but it wouldn't be true.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone here play 110?
Used to play it when a kid. It's the only card game most people know where I grew up.

What's the name of the card game where you lay out all the cards face down on the table, then you pick any two, trying to find a pair? If you get a pair you remove them and go again, otherwise the next player gets a turn. As the game goes on you remember where more and more cards are. Person who has got the most pairs wins.
Great game, but don't ever play it with small kids, as they will beat you easily.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

A couple of friends of mine are good enough at Texas Hold'em that they manage to play it online and make a profit. I keeping meaning to try and learn how.

Don't make the same mistake I made caitlin!

Leee's a Simpson (Leee), Thursday, 27 May 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Cribbage is great. My friend and I have a running competition for a cent a point. Also knockout whist (aka contract or prediction) but you need more than 2 people.

I also have a fondness for My First Memory and other picture card games.

isadora (isadora), Thursday, 27 May 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
I really want to play Bridge, in London. Or Canada, latertimes!

I am pretty sure my friend Nick and I invented the greatest two-player card game ever about a month ago. Everyone we've taught it to has taken to it like crack and now begs us for games and shit. [We know geeky people, though]

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 8 January 2005 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

You invented cribbage?

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 8 January 2005 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The cribbage players on MSN are a bit scary though. There is a ranking system and lots of people won't play if you are ranked too low (though you don't get a set of steak knives or anything for having a high rank).

isadora (isadora), Sunday, 9 January 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

If there is an ILX bridge evening, I might well be up for it! I used to be quite good, in a small way, but haven't played for ages.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 9 January 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Cribbage is great, actually. It has a real sort of "And now I fflyumph the grees and win" "huh? oh." kinda vibe to it.

I hated bridge for ages and ages because I played with better people and hated letting them down. Then I found MICHAELS CUE BIDS and it was love love love.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 9 January 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

eighteen years pass...

want to get into cribbage, considering buying a board

playing a lot of gin rummy lately, fantastic game

corrs unplugged, Sunday, 15 January 2023 10:10 (three years ago)

two years pass...

I played a lot of euchre with family growing up, but hadn't played in 30-35 years, so I joined a four-week thing at the library. It's for beginners; I'd completely forgotten everything except the idea of left-right bowers, but within 15 minutes, everything had come back to me. Anyway, the catch: hearing the word "trump" about 100 times this morning. "When there's a trump, things change"--very true.
