I wanted to ask somebody "Hi do you fancy a game of <card game name>" and I realised that I KNEW NOTHING.
The only game i knew was Texas River Hold'em No Limit as played on Late Night Poker on C4 and now Poker Million, but I thought actaully GAMBLING inside a court wouldn't have been too cleer a thing to do.
What are good card games? And where can I learn (website links pls)? I always heard of this whisk(??) game, how does it work? it sounds like it involves wanking.
Also anyone in london fancy a Late Night Poker??????

Shithead is fun: http://www.pagat.com/beating/shithead.html but I find that if you don't play it regularly you tend to forget the rules.

there was another we played at school which iinvolved big piles of vards too, whichj I enjoyed but can't remember.

I vaguely remember playing Rummy with two decks of cards. It made it more difficult and much longer. Actually, now that I remember, it was a great game too.

Whist is simple and fun, I guess! Tarok? Ombre? All of these are for three or more, though. Are there are good two player ones? Snap?

Each player looks at their hand and decides on the basis of what they've got how many tricks they'll think they'll win. The player to the left of the dealer predicts first. However, you'll want to ensure that not everyone predicts correctly and wins for the round, so there is a twist in that the last player is NOT ALLOWED to predict a number of won tricks which means that the total predicted adds up to the no. of cards dealt for that round. So if there are four players and four cards are dealt to each, if each of the first 3 players to predict says they'll win one trick, the final player to predict cannot say 1 - they have to predict 0 or 2, 3 or 4.
The dealer writes down the no. of tricks predicted under each player's name then play begins. Aces are high. You must follow suit if you can. If you can't follow suit you can opt to trump the cards that have been laid or lay down a suit which is not following suit or trumps, depending on whether you want to win or not. At the end of the round each player who has predicted correctly gets 10 points + the no. of tricks they predicted. Everyone who didn't predict correcly is scratched and their prediction is blobbed out (hence the name of the game).

Rummy is also fun--I learned it while playing with about 4 decks and 6-8 people.

Uno for DOS.
Blob/Prediction Whist sounds like the same game as Oh Hell/Up The River, Down The River. That's a very good game too, must echo the love for it.

Best four-player card game: Euchre.
I am a bit sad that I didn't get to play any cribbage with Bryan when I was in Winnipeg.

also, as far as solitare i'm a big Montana fan. Essentially: deal four rows of thirteen in a grid. Remove the aces. In each of the blank spots, you can move the card that's immediately following in suit and number the card to its left. In the leftmost column, a blankspot takes an arbitrary two. A blankspot following a king is "dead". (unless you move the king away). The object is to build from the twos on up until the entire grid is in order. You can remove the cards not yet in order, shuffle and redeal (leaving blankspots behind each of the ordered parts of the rows) twice. To make it easier, give yrself three or four redeals.
V. addictive.

Contract Whist is rather good, but I can never remember how the scoring works.
A friend of mine once invented Competitive Patience. It has lots of opportunities for physical contact, hand touching, paper cuts, serious injury...
A couple of friends of mine are good enough at Texas Hold'em that they manage to play it online and make a profit. I keeping meaning to try and learn how.

Cribbage is not only the best two player game (although I have played it with four in the past), it's the best card game period .
Cheat is sufficiently easy to pick up that my kids (9 and 6) are pretty good at it, so it's probably a good one to teach people who don't know any other card games.
I'd Fancy A Poker, but I'm not in London. I'd consider the journey if it was bridge though...

What's the name of the card game where you lay out all the cards face down on the table, then you pick any two, trying to find a pair? If you get a pair you remove them and go again, otherwise the next player gets a turn. As the game goes on you remember where more and more cards are. Person who has got the most pairs wins.Great game, but don't ever play it with small kids, as they will beat you easily.

I played a lot of euchre with family growing up, but hadn't played in 30-35 years, so I joined a four-week thing at the library. It's for beginners; I'd completely forgotten everything except the idea of left-right bowers, but within 15 minutes, everything had come back to me. Anyway, the catch: hearing the word "trump" about 100 times this morning. "When there's a trump, things change"--very true.
