It's good some good advance buzz!

The trailer looked promising.

Okay, I'll anticipate it. Here on this thread.

I saw the trailer. I like the part where Lars is cussing out James and calling him a dick. Pot Kettle Black.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It's also by the guy who did "Brother's Keeper" and "Paradise Lost," so it could very well be good.

Note: I have fond feelings for _St. Anger_. I'll be in the corner if anyone wants to kick the crap out of me.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

go see this! it's too long but totally hilarious. their hallucinatory levels of wealth are just jaw-dropping. most of the "plot" is the bands relationship with this big money crisis/conflict/relationship shrink guru guy who is totally devoid of wisdom or insight, is clearly a parasite and a charlatan, but who talks them through the making of their record, even though they hate each other. they all end up speaking to each other in his language. the only big reveal is when his fee gets mentioned, i won't give it away.

lars sells an enormous cy twombly for like $3 mil. kirk likes horses. lars' father is like a cross between gandalf and lars.

beware, though, if you laugh at any of this, you well get true fans turning round in their seats to glower at you.

my mind is boggling at the idea of a tie-in book for a tie-in movie for an album that wasn't particularly popular.

one month passes...
My first movie review i ever wrote in my life:

http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0427/eddy2.php

chuck, Friday, 16 July 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked your review

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 16 July 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

very good review. i especially like the "...occupies the David St. Hubbins's girlfriend role" bit.

Kingfish von Bandersnatch (Kingfish), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Great review. The movie sounds horrible, I can't wait to see it.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a very strong allergy to psychobabble, thus, i will not see it.

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna see it just for the Dave Mustaine crying scene.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked how you dissed B0b R0ck. hahaha

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Kirk's half-Filippino? I gotta see this movie now!

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the part where they get into the 1898 filipino-american war and its opposition by anti-imperialist intellectuals in the united states is very interesting.

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck's review is one of the best things I've read recently.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 16 July 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"I liked how you dissed B0b R0ck. hahaha "

OTM.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 16 July 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Colin Tappe review Chuck refers to is pretty funny, too.

In an attempt to return to the stripped down and “raw” sound that producer/surrogate bass player/general douche bag Bob Rock ironically enough KILLED on Metallica’s s/t album from ’91, Bob decided it would be best if he just didn’t mix the album and made all the equipment just sound like shit. I mean, if it was in fact Lars’ idea to have the snare sound like a giant cell-phone tower being struck with a hammer two blocks away while the kick in contrast sounds like it’s being played TWO FEET AWAY FROM YOUR EARS, then it was certainly Bob’s duty to put his contender for Douche of The Universe in check. The truly incredible part is that the listener NEVER gets used to the abysmal drum sound, despite its persistent plonging (and you KNOW something’s bad when it invents a new verb!) throughout St. Anger. “Hey, why should I make the drum levels sound different when the parts of the song change? Can’t you see I’m busy committing CAREER FUCKING SUICIDE ovah heah?” spake the Rock.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 16 July 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Friday, 16 July 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it works both ways.

So...it wasn't "funny" funny. It made me want to go jetskiing in the Bay, though.

I'm not really a fan, but James Hetfield was sorta cool.

This was great!

Kirk Hammet is one of the greatest people on the planet, seriously.

there is no movie i want to see more

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with jel, kirk is very likeable if a little hippy surf-dude.

cºzen (Cozen), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone else think Hammett's a closet homosexual?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i was under the impression he was openly bi

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

just on a "don't ask don't tell" level with sections of the fan base

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

it was pretty fascinating to see the bass player tryouts, some big names there... would've been great if they'd been a bit more candid on what they thought of each guy.

lars is a prick but i found him more likeable than james. probably my favourite lars moment was when he screamed fuck right in james' face.

Mil (Mil), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The Dave Mustaine bit was brilliant! "how do you think I felt?!" If I saw Dave on the street, I'd tell him not to worry and that Megadeth rule. And Lars' dad seemed to be a cross between Willy Nelson and a Yoga Master.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 21 October 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Lars' Dad....was AWESOME! OMG when he told them they should just delete everything b/c it wasn't up to snuff?! Audible chortles from the audience.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 21 October 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
I liked it!

I think it may have helped that I have no preconception about Metallica one way or the other, so I'm not bringing any of Chuck's bitterness about the band or anything.

Pretty much all I knew of Lars Ulrich was him taking on Napster, so I was surprised to find that he's the one I liked the most. Also, he kinda looked like Donut Christ. That is, when he wasn't looking like Giovanni Ribisi. (And then I imagined James played by Will Ferrell, and Bob Rock played by Carson Kressley, and I got too excited.)

Kirk Hammett = soooo gay

I actually didn't find myself laughing at the movie too much. A couple things were pretty over the top, yeah, but I also was frequently imagining my own band in their position and having the same kinds of arguments. (Haha, the singer-telling-the-drummer-to-just-play-a-straight-beat argument already happens.)

Anyway: fun.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 28 January 2005 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved this movie when I saw it in the theaters way back when. I'm not much of a Metallica fan, although I liked them in jr. high somewhat, but this was a very good and entertaining doc.

Ulrich, speaking by phone from Cape Town, South Africa, where the pioneering metal band will play this week, didn't want to go too deeply into details about the film. It stars young "Chronicle" actor Dane DeHaan as a member of Metallica's concert tour crew who's sent on a special mission by the band. The movie follows two parallel story lines — DeHaan's scripted narrative and the band's concert — which intertwine throughout.

"To be at the forefront in this situation where IMAX has never done this is very exciting," Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said.

?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

Even for someone who speaks English as a second language, Lars really, really often speaks like he's been mistranslated.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:22 (thirteen years ago)

James Cameron will be taking Metallica to the bottom of the Mariannas with him.

"Wait where are you going?"

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:22 (thirteen years ago)

ha ha lars is being soooooo cagey in all of his quotes:

"To be at the forefront in this situation where IMAX has never done this is very exciting," Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said. "It's also a bit of a confidence booster. Being in the movie-making business is not necessarily our forte and it's been a very interesting three years. We've learned a lot about a lot of different things. The recognition from IMAX and to be able to have our fans and people that are interested in this film to see it and experience it in the IMAX format is super cool."

...
"Any filmmaker hopes people like a film," Ulrich said, "but what I can guarantee is that it will be unlike anything that anybody's ever seen before — so at least that's something. And for that I'm pretty excited."
...

"Metallica (has a) tendency to jump and then start asking questions on the way down, then realize that as we get closer to the ground that there's no safety net and realize we should have asked more questions on the way down," Ulrich said. "But that's part of the rush. We jumped and this seemed like a pretty fun undertaking."

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

"so to summarize, we had no idea what we were doing and it's garbage but hey it's definitely 'interesting'"
