Probably a stupid question but I'll be in NY the day of the Division One play-off finals. Does anyone know of anywhere that might be showing this? Sports bar, soccer club...live on the giant screen at Times Square?

Who are you shouting for?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Dickerson Pike to thread

The mighty Eagles...does it make a difference? Please tell me you're about to list the '100 best bars in NY showing the Div 1 play-offs with a definite Palace bias'

winterland, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I'm a West Ham fan. Hope you don't find anywhere.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I missed the last play-off that we won..on a plane from LA...maybe not seeing it would be a good omen..

It's probably cheaper to fly to New York for the weekend than get a ticket to Cardiff. I'm still considering getting one for £200.

How confident do you feel about Palace's chances?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

if they can get one in early doors they'll be sorted

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

they play better when they're pissed you see

When I was over there I wanted to see the Leeds v Portsmouth game.

Here's how I worked out where it would be on: in pretty much all the bars which have posters up saying they show English football (and there are a fair number of these) there's a free US footy fanzine. This prints ads from various places which say which games they'll be showing and when. Pick one near you and Bob's your uncle! Except when I pitched up to my selected bar, the satellite firm had changed their plans and I ended up wiatching boring old Chelsea - Newcastle.

That was useless, sorry. Dickerson Pike to etc etc.

I think the pressue's off them. I'm not sure that it's not a mistake for Pardew to keep banging on about how disastrous it'll be if they lose. Longer the game goes on without a goal the more I fancy us to win it. To be honest I was more worried about Sunderland, it's been against teams with great hulking beanpoles in defence that we've struggled.

i too will miss this momentous occasion, is it only on sky? when is wembley going to be built so i have a chnace of getting down from sheffield? i will be reduced to trying to find a radio or something i guess, straining for mentions of johnson and shipp....wait, i mean freedman. right, iain?

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's ironic that you can thank Brian Deane for Palace sqeaking into the last play-off position. I've seen Palace a few times on telly this season and aside from Johnson, Julian Gray and Routledge, the rest of the team seemed fairly standard division one. I guess there is less expectation at Palace, considering league positions pre Dowie, but for me, it's all about marking Andy Johnson. If Repka is given that job, I'm scared.

For the previous play-off final I was on a plane back from LA. While i was asleep my girlfriend asked the stewardess if she could ask the pilot to get the score for me. I woke up to a little note reading "palace 2 - sheffield 1... YOU WON" on the seatback in front of me.

winterland, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Odd to think Iain Dowie & Michael Hughes played for West Ham and Alan Pardew and Hayden Mullins played for Palace.

Actually, it's not odd at all, the sort of thing that happens all the time in football.

Dowie the manager far outstrips Dowie the player, who in turn outstrips Dowie, the pin-up.

Nevada Smiths in the East Village, 3rd Ave btwn 11th and 12th. The cover will be something like $20 (which is, what, about four of your pounds sterling) and the place has the atmosphere of a toilet bowl, and you'll be standing next to some drunkard who will tell you he played for Crystal Palace reserves in 1972, and god help you if you actually want someone to serve you a pint of beer, but at least you'll get to see your final.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

There's no chance that Liverpool-supporting bar on 11th/Ave A might not show it, Ben? That was free and friendly, I recall. If full of rednose shite.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll give them a ring this afternoon.

If only this were true, I'd be importing hundreds of ipods and the like and making enough to retire on.

Many thanks Dickerson.

I'd recommend The Sporting Club in Tribeca (99 Hudson) where you can watch any sporting event as long as it's on satellite. You can even call ahead and reserve a table and TV that shows your game/match/fight/whatever. Also try the Edge in the east village (95 E. 3rd St.). The Edge is owned by a couple of brits who tend to yell at you if you're not drinking fast enough, but if they're watching the football, too, then you'll likely have peace.

cramedog, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd also bet DBA in the East Village or the Alibi in Brooklyn might have it.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ixnay on the 11th Street Bar. You're limited to Nevada Smiths (74 3rd Ave, at 11th St), McCormacks (365 3rd Ave, at 26th St), or Clancys (978 2nd Ave, at 52nd St), or you could go to Hoboken on the PATH, where Mulligans (159 1st St) is supposedly showing it.

I'd try McCormacks over the others.
