Is he a traitor? we all know the feelings between Man Utd & Leeds fans. Will he ever even be welcome back in Leeds?
Its certainly a great signing for Man Utd.

Redman, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Poor stupid Leeds.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Has Dido been asked for her views on this?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Where are Man U gonna play him? Is Ruud still rumored to be leaving? Were I Fergie, I'd be working more on the D. As a Leeds fan, I wasn't surprised that Smith was leaving but going to Man U is going to be hard to accept.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

No, they need a goal hanger to pair with Ruud. He's never gonna get "the D." right, it would seem (after YEARS of trying!), so they will just have to score more goals, Lazio mid-90s style.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha 'the D', you and your west coast lingo

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You're hella harshing my buzz, tubular British bro'.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

how come you are a leeds fan michael? im from that area, but you never came to the fap when i was in sf:(

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

By the way, dueman stevem, you totally got served:

poor stupid Leeds...

-- stevem (bluesk...), April 7th, 2003.

Keep it on the low-low, Steve Mizzle.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Apologies, I meant "dudeman".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

charltonlido,

I've only been posting for 5 or 6 months so I don't know which fap you are referring to. The last one here I was unable to attend due to grandmotherly duties. Leeds fan since I started watching EPL in the late 90's for esoteric reasons related to Richard III and alchemy. Unfortunately they seem to have taken gold and transformed it into lead.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You can bet he's gonna receive plenty of death threats. The abuse will be far worse than what Ferdinand got.
It could be interesting if leeds play man utd in the FA Cup next year!

redman, Thursday, 27 May 2004 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't realise you were a grandmother, Michael White.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 27 May 2004 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

aw man alan smith suxx0r

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 27 May 2004 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

As much as this was the one move I really didn't want to see, you cannot blame him for going. I think he'd always be welcome back at Elland Road, but then I don't think that he would ever move back now anyway. Maybe when his career is nearing it's end. I hope I can still like him when he plays for manyoo, but I used to like Saha & now...

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 May 2004 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently some leeds fans have put a bounty on Alan Smith's head.

___ (___), Thursday, 27 May 2004 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i never get tired of that :)

i suppose this is worse than when Rio left because Smith is a Leeds lad and has always been with them, i guess the only problem people have is with who he joined rather than the fact he left at all - what if he'd gone to Arsenal?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Good luck to him

holojames (holojames), Thursday, 27 May 2004 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

the guardian byline the other day saying hearty smith was the leeds problem not the solution was v persuasive if a bit heavyhanded

prima fassy (mwah), Thursday, 27 May 2004 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

As a Manchester City fan I am over the moon that he is joining Utd. His strike rate is poor, he's easy to loathe, and alongside Sally Gunnell and Van Horse, will create the ugliest strikeforce ever.

___ (___), Thursday, 27 May 2004 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a good move for Smith, a bad move for United, and Leeds fans can shut the fuck up and think themselves lucky he stayed as long as he did. Twats.

(NB this is NOT directed at any Leeds fans who DON'T think he's a Judas)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Where's Viduka going? Or has he gone already?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe Sheerin to Palace?

chris (chris), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Leeds have no interest in offloading Viduka - remember he is technically owned by a bank on HP finance - they are more likely to be working on selling Milner or other players where cash could be generated (if anyone sees value in Seth Johnson)

___ (___), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely Viduka wants to leave tho?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe Sheerin couldn't actually go to Palace as he'd have to repay the compensation he received when he had to retire from professional football. However, were Palace to offer to cover this too, then every AFCW fan in the world would be thrilled for him and proud of the part we played in his career. Seriously.

When Matt Everard spent 10 days considering a move to Aldershot, not a single poster on the AFCW gurestbook resented him for taking their offer seriously.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought they had stated they weren't getting rid of Milner.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

it's always nice to imagine that players will stay on at relegated clubs but it's never going to happen. Unfortunate choice of club but you really can't blame him.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Krasner stated Milner wouldn't go. Krasner then accepted a £5m offer for Milner from tottenham. Milner decided to stay.

___ (___), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

so magnanimous.

What if MK dons offered them a kings ransom?

I don't blame Alan Smith for moving, mind you I thought he was a Leeds fan through and through which makes his destination a surprise, as all the Leeds fans I know hate manyoo more than I do. I'm far from surprised that people are angry at him, not one bit. If he'd gone to Arsenal I don't think they would have minded half as much, they were resigned to losing him, just not to them.

chris (chris), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

My suspicion is that Leeds will be very keen for Mr. Viduka to depart, on account of his wages.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

... which, of course, is the only possible reason that Viduka himself would stay

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

He could be fond of the W Yorks pies.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Overly fond of them it appears

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't we all?

chris (chris), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Smith's only gone to Manchester because Dido wants a contract with Valentine Records.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure if the Dido rumour is true, but I *did* hear something about Alan Smith's previous girlfriend dumping him for Cristiano Ronaldo. Could be interesting in that changing room.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, why are you dragging this out? I would be disappointed at ANY player who chose to sign for Franchise, not that they could ever offer a king's ransom in the first place. And any player who has played for AFCW will have had it explained to them in no uncertain terms why Franchise are a bad thing. This isn't just local rivalry, however ingrained. Going to franchise is inherently a political act.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(HUGE Fat Viduka sized x-post)

I think you are partly right Tim, but he isn't the greatest reason. If they sold him for less than £6-7m (I think this was the figure), they lose money on the Financing.

So, then it comes into his salary for the year, potential effect on a Leeds promotion bid and everything. Plus the wage cap isn't in effect in the first division yet, only division 2 and 3 this year.

Viduka will want to leave though, no question. Finding a buyer may be the difficulty.

___ (___), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just trying to think of an example that would make you angry Mark. That's how Leeds fans feel who see someone they thought of as one of them go over to the dark side. I find it highly understandable is all.

chris (chris), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I can see how they'd be pissed off, but directing that hatred towards Smith just makes no rational sense. Maybe it's the "rational" bit that can't be applied to football fans.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Alan Smith has always been Leeds through & through, but you really cannot blame him for moving to a club with better prospects. Didn't he wave the transfer fee that he was entitled to so that Leeds got the full whack?
I think also the problem arises because Smith himself said he wouldn't ever go to manyoo, but that was off course when they were in the champions league!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

precisely, didn't we agree ages ago that there's something completely irrational about a person's love for their team?

x-post

also, Pink - his agent got 750large out of the deal.

chris (chris), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant smith specifically, not his agent.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Pink's right, he waived his personal fee

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

But Leeds still didn't get full whack. Good of Smudger though.

chris (chris), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, at least Leeds got £7m for him. We got fuck all for Campbell.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i meant full whack in as much as they could get. the agent isn't gonna wave his fee, they have ties to players, not clubs surely?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

leeds got 6, the agent got 750k, not sure about the other 250

that's what I read today anyway.

chris (chris), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Semantics really I guess, it's just the report that I'd heard is all.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I could tell you a story about Mr Smith's luv of Leeds that might make some fans question whether he's been treacherous at all, as it casts some doubt whether he gets Leeds at all. Also, he said man Yoo and leeds wouldn't really be rivals as they weren't in the same division.

Coming soon - I'm a footballers brain cell, get me out of here!

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

do tell dave!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Pink - sign into AIM

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I can sign into msn, already there actually!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Also cut and paste the entire conversation and email it to me, thx bye.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh! Jst logging into aim now Dave!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Couldn't he have done it without an agent, or got his dad to sort it out (à la Etxeberria)?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Damnit i can't get into aim! *cries*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 May 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
Eriksson's pairing him up with Owen. Will this work?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Only six subs tomorrow. Heskey's injury maybe forced his hand, but I cynically think not. Defoe will get a decent run out too.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Mikey, having two fast attackers as opposed to the usual fast/strong, holder/scorer, header/assister combo, will it work with these two? Smith, I imagine will be given an almost attacking midfield position from which to either score or serve Owen, no?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Smith played very well against Chelsea. I think it is a good move on Eriksson's part.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

He should have dropped owen and played Defoe instead, seriously.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

jel,

Was Owen's main asset a pace he can no longer achieve?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

He's kinda injury prone and he has lost a bit of pace. I just think it'd be good to try some other strikers as it's a friendly and all. I'm surprised that Sven wants to start with Smith.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be surprised if Owen lasted more than 40 minutes before being replaced by Defoe. Smith will play at least 80.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Will Owen be wearing the dazzling bluey white of England or Real Madrid in his next 'thanks, mum' Persil advert? I think Persil put pressure on him to move to a team that plays in white.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone see the Under 21's? Looked good (admittedly I turned over to see Tru Calling at 9pm).

MikeyG (MikeyG), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Smith will play at least 80

This is an England friendly, remember. He'll be lucky to last till half time, like everybody else.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

sven's only allowed to change 6 players this time though.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh aye, I'd forgotten about that.

Smith to last the 90 then.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't Owen a tool really? Especially when being interviewed - jeez.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone see the Under 21's?

Cole and Pennant looked great.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

c.cole and defoe are the way for the future.

smith is a scrapper with a great attitude, but lacks quality.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

(he is not good enough to be a first choice for his club or country imho)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

He's gonna be a first choice for ManU 'til Saha, Van Nistelroy, and Solskjaer get back.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

he is, but i am not happy about it. i am looking forward to the recovery of those injured players you mentioned, although i fear solskjaer may never be the same again.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Weasel-Diesel partially OTM. As a Leeds supporter I've watched (and loved) Vimto-lips for a long time and although he always gives his all - and has moments of great quality - he will never be a 20-a-season striker, not even for Man U.

Adam Faithless (Adam Faithless), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of limited strikers out of their depth, why is sven bothering with shola ameobi? he's one of the clumsiest, most awkward strikers in the premiership, for real.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally agree - he doesn't look any better than Peter Crouch and so, by extension, Brian Deane and Ian Ormondroyd. I hope Defoe gets a fair do tonight. He's a real "buzz" player - things are always happening around him.

Adam Faithless (Adam Faithless), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)
