Cilantro -- kills bacteria dead!

My kinda story:

U.S. and Mexican researchers said they had identified a compound in cilantro that kills harmful Salmonella bacteria. They hope it can be developed into a safe food additive that could help prevent foodborne illness.

The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, shows why salsa, a staple of Mexican food, and many other spicy foods seem to have innate antibacterial activity. It fits in with other studies done over the years that show popular spices can keep food from spoiling.

The compound, called dodecenal, is found in the fresh leaves and the seeds of cilantro, also known as coriander.

In lab dishes dodecenal was twice as effective as the commonly used antibiotic drug gentamicin against Salmonella, a frequent and sometimes deadly cause of foodborne illness.

"We were surprised that dodecenal was such a potent antibiotic," Isao Kubo, a chemist at the University of California, Berkeley who led the study, said in a statement.

the key word is a variation on "taint."

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

They better not make it a coriander FLAVOURED additive! I cant stand the taste of that shit :(

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 27 May 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Trayce OTM, it makes me seriously nauseated just to smell it. Does this mean I myself am salmonella? That would explain a lot.

"They hope it can be developed into a safe food additive" means IT IS NOT A SAFE FOOD ADDITIVE IN ITS CURRENT FORM!

I naturally gravitate towards foods that are very good for me, it seems. Why is this? Perhaps I am just smarter than you.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least, considering I'm sitting here with tonsils that feel like twin Death Stars and weird waves of fever that knock me on my ass if I turn my head.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

don't British people eat soap anyways?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Another way to reduce the risk of salmonella is to stop chickens from living in their own excrement. But you know, chickens are stupid and filthy animals and there's no talking to them.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Developed into a safe food additive, like, um, cilantro? Or coriander even?

Kris (aqueduct), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Stop eating chickens also helps prevent salmonella.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

they eat soap for their filthy crooked teeth.

http://www.peta.org/feat/hiddenlives/index.html

Chickens are inquisitive and interesting animals and are thought to be as intelligent as mammals like cats and dogs and even primates. When in natural surroundings, not on factory farms, they form friendships and social hierarchies, recognize one another, love their young, and enjoy a full life, dust-bathing, making nests, roosting in trees, and more.

HAHAH PETA IS DUMB

I have a very antagonistic attitude towards birds, since they are the primary surviving descendants of the dinosaurs, and I still feel strongly about the mammal/dinosaur feud. I realize that most people think the dinosaurs are long gone, and there's no point in worrying about such an old rivalry, but I cannot just let it go.

two years pass...
So has anyone here ever HAD salmonella poisoning? JUST WONDERING. (Note: If you have had salmonella poisoning, did it last longer than 6 days?)

Cinnamon kills E Coli.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 June 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

So, hypothetically, if I made a cilantro-cinnamon smoothie and downed it, my body would be rid of e. coli AND salmonella?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 9 June 2006 19:37 (twenty years ago)

I remember when I used to watch the Madhur Jaffrey programs as a kid, she used to put coriander ("cilantro") in EVERYTHING she did. In fact I was always quoting the "lots of lots of love-ly green coriander" line at inappropriate moments (Like when we had an Indian family visiting), for the reason that she used to put crates of the stuff in for each recipe. No wonder people in that part of the world live so long.....

And a cilantro-cinnamon smoothie is probably something I would have tried a year ago, when I was making "health drinks" out of sage and oranges (complete with peel). Having to explain away sage twigs in the food mixer is not a good thing.

It makes sense, though. The regions that are most at-risk for foodborne illnes (South-East Asia, Central America) have a lot of Cilantro in their diet.

lol at "mammal/dinosaur fued."
