I knew!

Hence they are also called groundnuts.

I liked the bit about not planting the roasted nuts as they won't grow!

people are also quite often surprised that pineapples grow straight up out of the ground. A friend at uni was adamant that they grew on trees although her reasoning for this was somewhat suspect, i.e. "when the man from Del Monte says yes, he talks to the trees!"

(yeah, but they were oranges)

I've had that pineapple argument as well. It raged for about half an hour in the pub once. I was on the wrong side.

all i know is that at the ally/tom fap last week NOBODY knew the answer about peanuts for sure. and people were so adamant that i was wrong that they grew under ground that i managed to talk myself out of it!

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 27 May 2004 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I must admit that I wasn't certain whether they grew ON the ground (unlikely, as the shells don't seem to ever be unevenly stained) or under it, but I did know that they are called groundnuts. I cook with their oil.

I remember seeing film of Jimmy Carter harvesting peanuts, but I wasn;'t at the merkin fap. I did think it was common knowledge though

It helps if you realise that they are not actually nuts but legumes.

That concludes the 'Use other pedantic botanical facts' lesson for the day.

I remember seeing film of Jimmy Carter harvesting peanuts

that was actually why i felt very confident saying they didn't grow on trees, which was the dominant theory at one point. i vaguely remember seeing footage of him playing with short shrubs, and just couldn't remember if he was pulling them out of the ground or picking them from shrubs.

But Jimmy Carter wasn't a very successful president. Perhaps he was getting it wrong.

he may have been a crappy perz, but he were a crackin peanut farmer

chris (chris), Thursday, 27 May 2004 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic case of overpromotion.

A new thread perhaps,
Why do peanuts keep there shape(for the most part)going in your mouth and, comming out? You know this has happened to you! Don't even try to lie about it!!!!
