following up from the robin carmody thread on ILM...i often feel like i don't have enough grounding in british history to understand much of his blog, or for that matter most of the political discussions on ILE. aside from what i've picked up from british friends and from reading jon savage's "england's dreaming" a couple of times, my grasp of what's been going on in the UK during the last few decades is pretty tenuous.

i'm interested in learning more, so could someone more versed in such matters recommend some decent books on recent (say 1960-present) UK history?

You're in luck. I'm studying a history course on Modern Britain 1832-1900 at the moment, with a v. good lecturer. Recommended texts are:
- W.L. Arnstein, "Britain Yesterday and Today: 1830 to the Present" (2001)
- J. BLack, "Modern British History: Since 1900" (2000)
- B. Porter: "The Lion's Share: A Short History of British Imperialism, 1850-1983" (1984)
- P. Clarke, "Hope and Glory: Britain, 1900-1990" (1996)
- R. Colls, "Identity of England" (2002)
- T.E. Heyck, "A History of the Peoples of the British Isles" (2000)
- P. Johnson (ed.), "Twentieth-Century Britain: Economic, Social and Cultural Change" (1994)
- K. Laybourn (ed.), "Modern Britain Since 1906: A Reader" (1999)
- A. Marwick, "British Society Since 1945" (1982)
- A. Marwick, "A History of the Modern British Isles, 1914-1999" (2000)
- K.O. Morgan, "The People's Peace: British history, 1945-1989" (1990)
- J. Ramsden (ed.), "The Oxford Companion to Twentieth-Century British Politics" (2002)
- K. Robbins, "The Eclipse of a Great Power: Modern Britain, 1870-1975" (1983)
- E. Royle, "Modern Britain 1750-1985" (1987)
- R. Weight, "Patriots: National Identity in Britain, 1940-2000" (2002)

This is just a shortlist. Email if you want more. Also, have you contemplated Simon Schama's "A History of Britain" (2002) or are you a Schama-hatah? Hope this helps.

thanks! i'm mainly interested in the last 30-40 years or so, but i'll check a few of those out. "hope and glory" looks like a good bet.
