The UK Independence Party's latest celebrity cheerleader - or are they getting desperate?

From today's Standard, just in:

The United Kingdom Independence Party has already signed up Robert Kilroy-Silk and Joan Collins. Now Max Clifford, the PR wizard who is assisting the resurgent party with its publicity, is about to unveil their most important celebrity so far to show that UKIP would not be a soft touch towards Brussels.

"Simon Cowell is going to be joining," Max tells me. "He's in the States at the moment and he doesn't know about it but he's one of my clients and his views are very much in line with UKIP. Expect a formal announcement just before polling day."

Given that Cowell is known as Pop Idol's Mr Nasty, presumably this means UKIP has now taken over from the Tories as the official nasty party.

I love that "he doesn't know about it but he's one of my clients."

Other celebrities confidently expected to join the UKIP electoral bandwagon: Ben Elton, Graham Norton, Lynsey de Paul, Alan Titchmarsh, Peter Greenaway, Derek Bailey, Paul Foot and George Galloway.

bloomineck. I'm no Simon fan, but what the heck when your agent can sign you up for a political party endorsement in your absence!

Gross, UKIP is for racists with money - and most of the figureheads seem to be, or have been, tax exiles. Make of that what you will.

Tax exiles and (ex)socialists either (Elton, Foot, Galloway, arguably Kilroy once upon a time). I really despise 'enemy of the enemy' type political alliances.

Nonetheless I do have a running bet on that Ben Elton will turn out for the Tories at the next General Election. Apparently their big cheerleaders are going to be Bryan Ferry and Marco Pierre White.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If Derek Bailey's for it, I'm agin it

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll leave the punching of Parker to Derek

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello, I'll send the missile that is my friend Steph out to keel-haul Bryan Ferry for this, he wants to be her friend right now and came to her book thingie on Tuesday.
