does anyone know what's happening on upper street now?

when i walked to work this morning, part of upper street was closed off, including the green. rumor has it that there was a stabbing. i searched on the bbc's website but they only have one paragraph about it:

"A murder inquiry is under way after a man died from neck injuries following an apparent assault.

The 23-year-old man was found on Upper Street, in Islington, north London, at 0240 BST. He was taken to hospital where he died shortly after arrival.

A post-mortem examination is taking place at St Pancras Mortuary on Thursday.

A second man, thought to be 28, also received minor injuries to the neck. He is in another London hospital. "

i was just wondering where i might find more updated info...i figure this might be something slightly more major than a stabbing, since they've got 4 crime tents up in the area and have apparently had a diversion going for almost 12 hours now...

any insider knowledge? or ideas on where to find breaking local news?

I just called City U's journalism dept but they don't know anything more.. could be Adam Family related stuff, i.e. the Islington mafia.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean the area is no stranger to random violence, gareth can tell you of his own narrow escape from two rapidly-advancing gangs of bat-wielding thugs on the way up to the Agricultural

I am desperately trying to make up an alternate version of the Addams Family theme here...

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

shit's real in islington darling

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

where did you get that from colette?

x-post: a friend of mine who lives round there was just telling me abt this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(i did an Addams Family ref on one of the Posh Becks threads, dead chuffed i was, like the guy who said 'back of the net!' in the pub the other night)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(oops misread, bbc webpage)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

On Upper Street right now, someone will be paying an inordinate amount of money for some ropey food whilst braying loudly to their mate who doesn't appear to have any visible means of support yet eats most meals out of their house.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

except we found a really nice and decently cheap place up there last weekend boyler, steaks as big as your arse, 12 quid.

chris (chris), Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a fucking huge steak.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Crazy, huge-looking police operations often seem to result in no media coverage. I don't know if it's more because they get no results or because it's all hush hush.

They had to restrain her. She was causing a ruckus.

lamest crowdsurf ever

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

meg had to walk round the backs to get to work too. she also thought it was a stabbing. rather surprising if it was at three o'clock this morning that there's still stuff up 8 hours later though...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That photo is Sarah Lucas being carried away in a rage after finding out that her artwork 'Two Fried Eggs and a Kebab' has been burned in the Saatchi fire, isn't it?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

There were people in clean room suits wandering around when I went past the green on the bus earlier. Must be something quite nasty.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, it's Islington, someone's been decaf latted

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i just did a search for 'islington' on the bbc news website and that bit came up.

it's just right outside where i work, so i keep being reminded about it. i'm surprised drivers aren't getting more ratty about the diversion, but there's only the occasional shouting i can hear in my window.

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

That's nothing, 8 hours. After the Turnmills shooting our road was shut with a cop at the end for two whole days.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the way a bit of random gang violence brings out the barely simmering class war in all of us. Especially Dave B of the gritty and unforgiving Blackheath urban wasteland.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's tough on the mean streets on Tranquil Vale.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 28 May 2004 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yesterday i walked past at 8.05pm. there was a police tent on the pavement, and it had thick yellow police tape around a wider area. there was some blood remaining on the pavement, and a number of police officers. this was outside a minimarket, about halfway down

further down upper st, outside the walkabout australian pub, there was some more police tape, but this time it was of the thin blue and white variety that signifies it is less important.

no idea if the 2 areas were related or not

at 10.15 the tape was gone

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 28 May 2004 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Police cordoned off the River Lea in Clapton this morning. Body found weighted down in the river. The copper said to me, "Do you want a look, it's quite near the surface?" I didn't. He then took all my details.

The river is about 400 metres from the art warehouse blaze and under two miles from Islington. Not that I'm adding to speculation or anything.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 28 May 2004 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Charltonlido on the case.

I like 'im lots.

penelope_111, Friday, 28 May 2004 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The copper said to me, "Do you want a look, it's quite near the surface?" I didn't.

That reminds me of when I found out about Princess Diana being killed, at about 4am on the night concerned, from a couple of policeman who were taking a statement from me about an unrelated matter. "Yeah - it's true! Bang goes my chances of shagging her," said one.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 28 May 2004 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you point out that, over her dead body, he probably had a BETTER chance?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 28 May 2004 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I had had the presence of mind, Matt.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 28 May 2004 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It wasn't until I started asking questions about how far the body had travelled downstream, that he showed an interest in me. Then I had to give all my details.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 28 May 2004 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, so maybe his question was a trap.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 28 May 2004 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, he fancied me.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 28 May 2004 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i understand islington thing was walkabout related, neck stabbing apparently...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 28 May 2004 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

That's an over-reaction.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 28 May 2004 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

that photo is of davina mccall after attempting to gatecrash the johnny vaughan capital radio advert shoot ("the stuff you sold me was SHIT! give me my 200 quid back!")

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 28 May 2004 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was Mick Jagger, post the Hyde Park gig, being dragged to the nearest swimming pool by members of the Brian Jones fan club

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 28 May 2004 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I never find out about these things until after the yellow board signs go up. Sigh. A few weeks ago, Blackfriars Bridge was closed off for HOURS. Turns out a bicyclist had been hit by a bus. Why don't they have some kind of news that tells you what disturbances and accidents and weird shit is going on in your neighbourhood? Like that time Kings Cross was all closed down and I started a thread about it and no one knew a thing about it...

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Friday, 28 May 2004 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I like to assume that every time one of these big unreported things happens, alien landings are involved.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 28 May 2004 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

If aliens landed in Islington... Now there's a thread.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 28 May 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought aliens were s'posed to be intelligent?!
